Out of curiosity, did anyone on here decide to go to University of Chicago, or was accepted and declining? I'm curious about people's opinions on the program, since it hasn't been discussed much.

Hey all. Plug for next year...
Just finished a visit with UMich. They paid for EVERYTHING- just to visit. The other funding opportunities are out of this world. Program is amazing and resources are next level shit in terms of faculty, new media, libraries, conference/residency/project funding and I'm very impressed with the work of current students. They really pulled out all the stops for accepted students. If you are interdisciplinary and a go-getter, this university is worth applying to. All students accepted this year (5 of us) are fully funded with material and travel stipend. We had lovely dinners with faculty and current grads while here.
If the school wants you, they will pay YOU to come study with them and pay for your entire visit; I cannot stress this enough. Today, outside curators said UM is competing with the top art schools/programs in the country and, while expectations are very high, they have a stupid amount of money to hand out. Research universities FTW.

Ahh...as I'm about to graduate from an MFA, I find myself lurking on here again....
AKW94-- I have to second mlk and coreythegiraffe. The best advice I've received thus far is try not to force yourself into a program that is not a good fit for you...and you just have to be objective and honest about who you are, the type of work you make, AND what you want to get out of the program/school/residency/whatever.
If you want the prestige, you can easily get that with other residencies--ALSO you can do internships that will greatly effect you for the better.
I have a friend who is in the Whitney ISP program right now....she makes phenomenal work but she also just finished her Phd in film and media studies before attending. She's an artist, but also an incredible writer--and those two go in tandem together for her. She told me that the studios are in Manhatten (who can afford to live there?) and your studio is basically a cubicle...kind of like CSU Long Beach layout. (if anyone has seen them)
I'm being serious. They are traditional cubicle style like in an office and you basically get to see what everyone is up to. I by no means think this is bad, but you have to consider 1. what type of work can you make in that environment 2. what kind of mentality that breeds 3. what do you honestly want to get out of it? <-----(I personally think this fuels the writing component in the program)
The program is incredibly rigorous and highly conceptual. This next part is going to be real talk.
If you really still want to go there, (hey maybe not this yr, but keep it on your radar) you need to beef up your CV and portfolio. I'm not talking solo shows or group shows, I'm talking about the awards, grants, residencies, publications, reviews of your work. You don't need a lengthy thing--but it really does show the committee that you are self sufficient (which the program wants you to be) and you are capable of producing a 'buzz' about you. In terms of your portfolio, if you have writing samples they're going to want it--even if you're just reviewing artwork in your local network.
Like mlk said, the program is for a very specific subset of artists...and I know you are hung on they've taken undergrads before--but let's be real they may have been older and they may have had better connections than you. My last vice is please don't hold your career to another's and ask, "why not me?" It's a really long journey, some people hit the stratosphere early, and others don't.

Honestly don't know what the issue is... I email them, and they have accepted undergrads in the pass.
Does anyone have any real information on the whitney program.

Im going to have to agree with mlk.
You are exceptionally young, even for MFA programs, and the Whitney ISP is for artist's who are older, more accomplished, and have more experience.
If you are interested in NYC, I would totally encourage you to check out the New York Arts Practicum. It's a 2 month residency/assistantship program. I attended in the summer of 2013 and it was great.

Your comment is a little brash, I didn't ask for a critique on my eligibility for the program. As a previous posters has stated, individual have been admitted without a MFA and even the website considers candidates without MFA's. So I don't know what your getting your information from, but's not from the program. If your going publicly post something make sure it's factual, instead of speculation.
I have decided to defer my application into next year. Yes my work is 'center" around printmaking, but would not consider myself a printmaker, but more interdisciplinary and theory base.

I discover this program late last year and I'm debating on applying for the Studio Programs before the deadline April 1st. The description on the site is super vague. Does anyone have any experience applying to this program, then please respond. I have read some post from last year on this site, but they weren't extremely helpful. I'm extremely confused if you have to send out physical paper documentation of your work??? I thought that was extremely odd and old school, they don't accepted cd's and said nothing about flash drives. I have other questions, I'll wait into I get a response.
Hopefully this forum will serve as discussion platform for this interesting 'mysterious' program.
Thanks!

you're a printmaker (huge strike one) who hasn't gotten his or her MFA yet (strike two)
my advice is don't apply. it'll be a waste of your time and money.
it's for people who make theoretical art. the only two people I know who went there both did conceptual videos with a marxist bent and had already gotten their MFA's from Columbia. that program is impossible to get into and is only for a specific subset of artists. if you look at the faculty and past faculty there is literally no one who is a painter (or a printmaker for that matter)
trust me on this one

I think it's easy to judge a book by its cover. Let's not forget the importance of community within grad school. I know many of the students in the program, and most of them are creating highly innovative and experimental work but beyond that they are intellectually solid. Yale really emphasizes its "ivy" league status when it comes to the importance of research while creating art. I think those are other factors to think about, not just the art. If that doesn't suffice then surely your looking into the wrong program.

finally got a VCU rejection email and offer for the summer program.
"There were many applicants who came extremely close in our deliberations, but faculty determined that they were not quite prepared for our program. Countless times we noted, "This applicant just needs the intensive time and critical feedback from the Summer Studio Program to put them over the top." "
give me a break

i went there two years ago; if you need motivation to get your studio practice in shape then it's a great program. it got me into grad school, but you only get out what you put in. they do give out one full scholarship each summer though..

Yale plans to email out the financial aid estimates early-mid next week, they said the 25th at the latest.
This info is in response to an email, so that's not official....
On a random side note, I want to put in a plug for Bard's program. The interview with faculty and campus visit really impressed me, as did the other interviewees.

keep in mind that Yale has a need-blind admissions process. As far as I understand, unless you come from a family that has a considerably high level of income, you won't pay anything near the full cost of attendance. Other top programs come to mind as being much more offensive in this regard.

Xxanderr reacted to Xxanderr in 2015 MFA Applicants: Share your work and statement!
To be honest I think you would benefit more from a BFA in Fine arts, instead of a MFA. Your work is missing a lot of basic understanding of composition, color and the human form--along with other things.
They teach theses fundamental things at the BFA level, not at the professional MFA level. Since you have a lot of schooling done already, you most likely want have to worry about your liberal studies, so you can focus on studio art classes. Try attending National Portfolio Day to receive further feedback. You can even try emailing your portfolio to admission officers, I did it once and got a portfolio review over the phone.
Lastly, why a MFA in art...?

As discussed in the Student Finance thread, Yale is need blind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need-blind_admission), meaning your ability to pay tuition will not effect your status of admission and more importantly -- if you can't pay tuition, you won't pay tuition. Personally, they virtually waived my tuition, and I know this is true for a lot of the students -- so In my case, it actually became the best financial choice.
In regards to your comment regarding coming down "to how good your work is and the value/intensity/mentorship of the interactions you have with your faculty and peers," well...yes, this is true regardless of which institution you attend. No school will guarantee success, Yale, Columbia or otherwise. That being said, it's still a damn fine school with some of the best resources in the country...so you could do a lot worse.
@Honey, I'll PM you in a bit, maybe I can answer/follow up on some of your questions.

The majority of schools on my list have good funding, I commonly see post like yours, assuming that attending a top MFA programs means huge debt. Which not always the case.
Cornell has terrific funding, I have made it my mission to find if they did or not, and the majority of the admitted applicants received tuition waivers and a TA position/stipend. Cornell funding has been pretty well documented throughout the Freak-out Forums.
PennDesign I had the chance to meet and talk to a faculty member during National Portfolio Day, and she mention that they have great funding, especially for minority students. Plus, PennDesign has an international MFA Show every year, I think the next one is in Korea...
Yale, is only 'need base', and I have no doubt that I want have to drop a dime there considering my financial situation. DOVA pays 75% of your tuition and that's only merit base, no clue what they may offer for 'need base'-- that might finish off the rest.
SAIC is the only school that I'm currently scratching my head about, their funding is horrible, I think they offer only 1 full scholarship per programs, besides that the highest I seen is 12K. They'er also last on my list, but I keep them there because during Portfolio Day, the chair mention that they are increasing merit based aid.
Not in a rush to attend a MFA program, so them being competitive does not bother me. Whatever I end up I want it to be a Tier 1 school, finishing strong at an excellent program is what I'm looking to do. I'm young so I'll continue to reapply into I get in a MFA program, that I feel will further my work and my career--even if it's just an head start....

yeah - they do, they make you fill out a very, very extensive financial aid form if you get an interview. Way more than FAFSA. I forget what it's called. You only have to do it once. There are also sections for you to explain additional burdens or costs that don't show up, extenuating circumstances (IE: My parents are disabled, etc... I have XYZ debt that doesn't show up in any section here, etc) They also ask for all 1099's, W4's etc.. but the good news is you only do it once. Second year you only do FAFSA/IRS data retrieval.
Hope that sheds some light

100% of need (of $55k) so whatever that would be for you
for me it was full tuition plus some money for living expenses as well as many people I know. increases slightly the second year.
