A large part of the *point* of a thesis is to show that you're able to come up with an interesting question or area of research.
Asking other people to give you topics largely obviates that point.

There's a difference between hours you're meant to be working as a TA/RA and hours you shuld be spending in your office to get your research and coursework done. No, you shouldn't be doing 40 hours a week of work related to your TA position but, that doesn't mean you shouldn't be in your office. So, I guess I'm not entirely sure what you're asking.

If you studied geometry and trigonometry eons ago, like me, than Magoosh is the best website for studying for the GRE(also has sections for understanding how to answer a verbal question and tricks to help you eliminate wrong answers). It has practice quizzes and videos that explain concepts more clearly then than books do. I would also get the ETS official guide and one manhattan book since that will provide you with 8 full length practice tests. Don't forget that you can google GRE practice tests and get at least two.

Also there are free GRE Vocab apps for your phone, which are really great to kill time on a the bus &c. Honestly I would suggest reading the new york times or any other news paper that covers world news. If you're not familiar with a word look it up.

I set one month aside just for studying for the GRE..

    Hope this helps,

C10H12N2O reacted to fuzzylogician in Opinions on physical attraction
I feel more physically attracted to people whose personality I find attractive. I do have physical features that I find more attractive on paper, if you asked me to describe my ideal partner's looks, but in reality I've dated people who didn't have those features and it didn't matter at all, once I got hooked on their personality (which is really what I am attracted to most). I don't think I behaved differently with the ones who were closer to my imagined physical ideal, at least not in any way I can see now looking back. It's an interesting question, though. Was there a subconscious difference? Maybe, who knows.

"For the Analytical Writing section, each essay receives a score from at least one trained reader, using a six-point holistic scale. In holistic scoring, readers are trained to assign scores on the basis of the overall quality of an essay in response to the assigned task. The essay score is then reviewed by e-rater®, a computerized program developed by ETS, which is used to monitor the human reader. If the e-raterevaluation and the human score agree, the human score is used as the final score. If they disagree by a certain amount, a second human score is obtained, and the final score is the average of the two human scores.

The final scores on the two essays are then averaged and rounded to the nearest half-point interval on the 0–6 score scale. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing measure. The primary emphasis in scoring the Analytical Writing section is on your critical thinking and analytical writing skills rather than on grammar and mechanics. Read the "Issue" and "Argument" scoring guides below."

I received a 5.5/6 for my analytic score and I have to say that I doubt it was due to using GRE words (because I only knowingly used one). Although I obviously structured my essays into paragraphs and used transition words I would say that my score was probably due to the ability to properly support my argument as well as acknowledge and dismiss opposing arguments. I would strongly suggest practicing your writing if you feel that you are not a strong writer. Please learn how to write a good essay, if not for the sake of your GRE score than do it for your graduate/post graduate career.

C10H12N2O got a reaction from babybird in Gender discrimination as a TA/student attendance
    Hello,

I was a female T.A. last year for a second year statistics class. The class had 5 T.A.s as there were almost 300 students and only one of us was a male (who just happens to be my husband). About 70% of the students e-mailed him their questions, went to only his office hours, and students rarely questioned his exam marking. However, it was a different story for the four female T.A.s. I think the whole 'women can't do math as well as men' stereotype came into play. People rarely e-mailed us questions, I literally had male students come to my office hours and start by saying 'I couldn't go to  Male T.A.s office hours this week do you even know how to do this', and plenty of students handed in their exams to be remarked by the female T.A.s and virtually all of their reasons for needed a remark were unfounded.

It's funny because myself and one other female T.A., were actually the most advanced in our degrees and had complete several advanced statistics courses while the male T.A., was just starting these courses that year. So I have definitely had pesky gender stereotypes affect me. I just dealt with it by being firm and standing by my marking and my decisions.
I know our experiences are different but I have a bit of advice none the less. Since the rules of the class are already in place there isn't much you can do now. I would probably ask for a Dr's note if a student had already used the excuse of being sick earlier in the term or were asking to miss an exam &c. Maybe suggest to your prof that he should have a max of 3 (or whatever number) of absences before students start loosing marks for attendance. After the '3' days they should have to provide a note for their absence.

C10H12N2O reacted to Tacoma in When do we find out about OGS/CGS-M(SSHRC)?
While the website I posted only showed schools from the US, the same rules apply in Canada as stated by the Canadian Psychological Association. The policy by the CPA has been in place since 1979 and states that:
Departments will endeavour to make offers of admission and/or support to applicants before April 1st.
Applicants have until April 15th to accept an offer of admission.
After April 15, offers will be made only to applicants who state that they are not committed to
    another department.
If you would like to read it for yourself you can examine the link below which will connect you to the CPA Graduate Guide but make no mistake, all schools in Canada and the US must give applicants until April 15th to accept or decline an offer. Therefore, if any school pressures you to make a decision before April 15th you can tell them you will be taking all the time you want because that is your right.

I don't know what schools you have applied to but if they gave you a March deadline that is just inconsiderate. According to the Council of Graduate Schools' Resolution Regarding Graduate Scholars, Fellows, Trainees, and Assistants, schools must give applicants up until April 15th to accept or reject graduate school offers. As far as I know, or knew, all schools in Canada and the US adhere to this regulation. The April 15th Resolution is described further on the following website:

C10H12N2O got a reaction from TenaciousBushLeaper in OB help
To find the sources you need you should learn how to use a search engine (e.g., PsychInfo or Google Scholar) efficiently. So for question two you could try searching "Money" AND "Incentive" then you can narrow where you want these words to appear (e.g., title, text, abstract).

To write efficiently you should be constructing your essay like a upside down triangle (UNLESS you are writing a research thesis, with a  discussion and results section, in which case it should be like an hourglass). What I mean by the upside down triangle is you start broadly and than narrow in on research that supports your conclusion. Make sure you cite each and every source that you use/get ideas from and use APA formatting if this is for a psychology class. If you want to be super technical you should be including a running head and page numbers.

Using transition words is helpful for linking ideas and allowing your essay to be less jarring to read (e.g., additionally, further, therefore, nevertheless, however, thus ext.). Your paragraphs should follow a logical flow from idea to idea and you can achieve this by having the last sentence in each paragraph link to the first sentence in the next paragraph. For example:

Although, many researchers believe that the humming bird only obtains nutrition from plant nectar, recent research has shown that they may eat a diverse range of plant material.

Someone et al, (2008) followed the migration pattern of a wide variety of bird species and determined that hummingbirds obtain most their nutrition from flower petals and stems.

    Hope this helped,

Take the interview but make sure to ask how she sees your research interests fitting together. It's been my experience that a lot of professors don't update their research interests on their webpage/the institution's webpage. So maybe their interests are more aligned with yours than you think.

If it's clear after the interview that you do not see yourself working with them let them know through a polite e-mail.
