ilovelab reacted to deadlock123 in My husband has turned into something horrible
Hi, I set up this account especially for you.
First of all, I am so sorry for the plight that you are in. Please don't leave your husband at this moment; if you do, I'm worried that he will turn into something more radical. However, if you have tried everything to talk sense into him but fail or if he becomes physically aggressive, that's another story.
Have you considered taking your husband to a psychologist? Or do you know some of his close friends/relatives who are not racist? Try to get your husband talk to them.
Or try to (discreetly) make him read real stories of the Holocaust - to let him understand what Nazism really means.
As a last resort, anti-depressants such as Prozac, Celexa, may drastically reduce his aggression/hatred towards "other races" or women.
You must stand your ground firmly and must never be swayed by your husband's attitudes/behaviours. If there's anyone who can change him, it's you. I understand how frustrating it is to battle against someone who holds drastically different (and wrong) values, especially if it's someone close to you. But please, please, please, don't give up on them without trying. I guess you don't need my reminder, but never forget that what you are standing for is 100% correct: women = men; white = Asian = black = Hispanics, etc.
Kudos. It will get better, and I hope to hear any updates from you later on.

The US News rankings are considered unreliable by some people (myself included) because of the methodology used. There is no real difference between the top ranked med school or the 20th (for example). US news makes it seems as though there are clear differences. There isn't a big difference between the quality of the programs between #1 and #20.
U Pitt has comparable science programs to Stanford. Stanford has the name recognition which is why everyone assumes its more competitive or it more prestigious to get your Phd from Stanford. I know it probably blows your mind that Pitt could be equal to Stanford in some areas, but its true.
NIH funding is a decent method to determine how competitive a school/programs are, but it also has its flaws.  For example, UTSW is a public school which according to NIH funding wouldn't appear to be very competitive but the programs at UTSW are just as difficult to get accepted to as U Mich/UW/UCSF/Yale etc even though it has a fraction of the NIH $$. They get a lot of private funding which is another reason they have a lot of international students.

I would give you more than 1 reputation point if I could.  This answer is so on par.  Rankings are a really crappy way to compare schools, and the point was, if you must, funding agencies have a more straightforward determination than U.S. News and World Report.
Point is, look at the science, read the papers, and go find your fit from there.  Funding is important, as is mentorship, projects of interest, and a palatable location.  Apply broadly and you'll find a good home.  I can almost promise that.

As a guy I've never experienced that while TA'ing. That being said our sections were optional. I did have more students come up to me during exams for help then my fellow TA's. They probably thought I would help them more with the exam than the other TA's. Honestly I don't think there's gender discrimination, the students may think you are the nicer TA and the students think they can get away with their lame excuses with you vs the other TA.

Adcoms aren't going to question why you have been a tech for 5 years. If you accomplished very little in those 5 years (no pubs/posters) than you have a reason to worry. Unless you have GPA issues or want to pursue a masters completing one prior to grad school doesn't help that much. No to mention is going to be expensive. The poster has paper/presentations out of this time as  a tech so he should be good. If he can get 3 great LOR from the labs he's done research in he will be golden especially if he can get the GRE scores up.

Congrats on being accepted!!  I lived close to campus my four years. Dorms for the first year, my frat house for the second (never again am I living with 50 guys), and apartments junior and senior year. My frat house and apartment were all within walking distance to UCLA. Commuting is tough especially with parking on campus. I swear UCLA gives out more parking passes than there are available spaces.
Do you plan on bringing a car or biking to campus? If you can afford it I would bring a car. Yes you can take the blue bus (for free with you student ID) to santa monica/venice, but if you want to go anywhere else you will need a car. I would recommend looking in an area we call "South of Wilshire" which is basically an area in between wilshire blvd and santa monica blvd (the 405 is on one side and the beverly hilton on the other). It makes a weird trapazoid shape. This should make sense if you google map it. Rent prices are FAR more affordable in this area than say westwood. Then again I was in undergrad 5 years ago so prices have obviously increased and who knows if this area is affordable anymore. IF you have a bike it will be easy to commute, be warned though its uphill to UCLA . IF that is too expensive than I would recommend living in Santa Monica. Somewhere close to Wilshire or Santa monica Blvd. That way you can take a blue bus to and from your house if need be.
Another option is graduate student housing. I don't know how nice these are though.
Message me if you have anymore questions. I'm happy to help!

I disagree with bichemgirl67. You GPA is obviously low but you did significantly better your jr/sr year. The fact that you don't have academic research experience isn't that  big of a deal. There are plenty of people who get into top grad programs with only industry experience. Hopefully you have highlighted the fact that your project resulted in a new product that make $$$ for your company. How many of us have had research experience as an undergrad that didn't result in anything. You getting interviews will depend on how well you wrote your SOP and your LOR.
When I applied to grad school I had a similar GPA (3.16) my major GPA was much higher (3.73) but I had worse GRE scores than you. I had 3.5 years of research experience without publications. I interviewed and was accepted at some of the schools you applied to (granted the programs were different).

No..... Just No. I don't know what you consider "larger state schools" but I guarantee you that the 25th percentile of HYP students are NOT 75th percentile at my alma mater UCLA. There are as many  smart people at both schools as there are rich entitled morons.

Not necessarily. I went to UCLA and we had grade inflation like no other. I had a friend who went to a local CSU and had almost no grade inflation. Your 3.5 at UCLA isn't more impressive than a 3.5 at a local CSU. Granted this depends on your major and what classes you took. Going to a prestigious school doesn't excuse you from taking the subject tests, that's a ridiculous statement. Take the subject test if you believe other parts of your application cannot compensate for a lower GPA. Or you were a marine bio major and now want to do a Genetics/Genoimcs PhD.

UCSD has a pre-application for international students that you have to fill out... so I would take a look at that and see when is the deadline. You've listed public schools which usually don't take a lot of international students.  I would consider also looking at more private universities IF they fit your research interests.
