  1. I have had my MacBook Air for five years, and it works great.... except that it crashes about once a week when in sleep. I don't want to buy a new computer, but I'm about to start writing my dissertation. The crashing makes me nervous! Ughhh Do I have to buy a new computer?

I'd just get an automatic online backup service and keep using that computer. Then if the computer dies (or gets stolen), you will have an up-to-date version.

  3. If you had to eat a raw frog today, would you do it in the morning or keep putting it off?

I would reevaluate the decisions that led to me having to eat a raw frog today.

  4. After a long medical road starting in September, I've finally been diagnosed with GERD. Follow up with them next week and a sleep study in August. Grad school hit my body like a truck O.o

It took my doctor a long time to diagnose mine as well. He thought it was several very scary things first.

  6. Why is the last exam the hardest to study for. I want to be done already.

I think the two statements are related...

  7. signed a lease for mediocre student housing! aw man, it feels like 2009 again.

Hah, I'd be thrilled to have a lease for mediocre student housing. That's the only affordable option where I'm going...

  8. I am worried that my choice of a destination may prove questionable to the people I leave behind at home, even though the program I will attend is still a respectable one for my field

You can get as good training at the top Canadian programs as the ~20-30 ranked programs in the US (at least in math), but the academic job prospects are better with a PhD from the US, for sure.

Sorry, not clear. I'm Canadian and was referring to our government too.

I don't think the current government really understands how science works.

I'm pretty sure about half of my professors think I made the wrong choice. I remind myself that (a) they don't know all the details, and (B) I'm quite certain this program is a much better personal fit for me.

  12. Almost there. So... done with the exam studying.

  13. One decision left now (which they said will come in "Around April 15th". I guess I will decline admissions to all my admits but one and hope that the last one comes in before the deadline. Kind of scary that decision time is only a few days away.

You could also consider asking for an extension from the one you aren't declining. I hope you hear soon... pretty lame to drag it out to the last minute like that.

  15. Sometimes I think I'm too young to handle moving away from everything I know to start a PhD... how do I do anything?!?! At least I'm 99% sure I have an apartment.

Yeah, I don't feel ready either. I've never lived anywhere else, and now I'm moving to a different country! Ahh!!

  16. UMN autoreplied to my email asking if I could get a decision before my acceptance deadlines on April 15th with "We will begin to review MS applications in March with decision notifications beginning around April 15". Well I guess the day of April 15th will be chaos.

Wow, that's pretty bad. I don't know how they can expect to be competitive with other places with that timeline! (Perhaps they don't?)

  17. I'm starting to fear that I won't have enough money to relocate to my program, especially since my job has started cutting everyone's hours. This is just fueling my anxiety. :-(

If it does happen (and hopefully it won't!), and your offer is funded, you could try to negotiate an advance payment or loan to help you move.

  18. Just had an interview at a school that I was officially rejected from because they brought on new faculty. If I'm rejected from the same program 3 times in 2 years, I'm just going to scream.

  19. My 2nd choice needs me to accept or decline very soon, but I won't hear about funding from my 1st choice for many weeks. Even if I can get an extension from my 2nd choice, it likely won't be long enough for me to hear back from my 1st choice. The woes of applying to schools in different countries.

    1. MathCat

      MathCat

Definitely hard. Have you mentioned this to your 1st choice program? They might be able to speed things up, or at least give you a vague idea of what you might be offered.

  20. Opinions on attending programs with no TA requirement? (fully funded, though)

I think if you're looking for academic jobs after, you definitely want to try to get some teaching experience. It would be nice to have it not be required, though.
