Subject: Inquiry from Potential Student
Dr. So and So,
I am an undergraduate student in blank at such and such. I am working on (paraphrase generalized research) with other Dr. So and So. I am interested in (paraphrase what work they do that you like) and am wondering if you are taking any graduate students for (semester).
Thank you for your time.
Succinct, to the point, and I attached my cv.

sjoh197 got a reaction from kekology4 in What does your office look like?
@TakeruK People always like my office collection until they come to my house and see my real collection. I started calling my office "overflow" for all the stuff I don't have room for at home. I've started having to collect things in big glass vase like things to contain them
I'm always worried that if I bring in anything nice that someone will steal it or it will just "go missing".

I think I have a solid 200 samples at home lol. There's a wholesale mineral show in two weekends. Gonna see what I can add to my office to make it more cheery

sjoh197 got a reaction from Bhu_It in Emailing POIs
I wouldn't email the POI at all.
If you are curious about the standing of your application... email the graduate advisor, or the admissions staff.
You could potentially aggravate your POI's if you bother them, especially if they don't know the answer.

sjoh197 got a reaction from dw3000 in Re-Using Last Year's SOP
I doubt anyone will remember the SOP you used last year. However, seeing as how you were rejected on all fronts (this happened to me as well) perhaps reusing a large portion of your SOP is a poor choice of "attempting greater success". I completely rewrote mine from scratch... without even looking at the original... and when I did, the results were leaps and bounds better than the one I had written the year before.

This is why when people ask me... to live alone or with a roomate? I always say live alone if you can afford it. The money you save isn't worth your sanity.
The best option is obviously to find a hunky engineer lover like I did and move in with them, but I guess not everybody gets those kind of options. Lol.

Wow... That's a no from me. Maybe its the parenting in me coming out, but I would have straightened her out already.
Dont clean her dishes. If her pans are taking up the stovetop, start putting them in a box or plastic bag and removing them from the common area and putting them in her personal space. Same with other clutter. Dont clean up after her or she will just learn that if she leaves stuff out, it will bother you enough that you'll do it.
Be direct. Actually tell her out loud "Stop putting shit on top of the trashcan when its full." "Stop leaving your god damn pots on the stove for 5 days" etc.

I let my alarm run every morning....
They run up the bed, down the bed, to the food dish, back across the bed, maybe step on my face.

sjoh197 got a reaction from Lalbadshah in Statement of Purpose
To begin with, your whole first paragraph is irrelevant, and contains info that the readers should already know. This is a waste of both space and attention span.

sjoh197 got a reaction from knp in Is it appropriate to add 3rd and/or 4th year GPA in addition to cumulative GPA if they are significantly higher?
I would not pull out a specific year. However, it is common for people to highlight their discipline gpa...So for me, it would have been just what I made in my geology courses. Also, lots of schools look at the last 60 hrs or so. So if you have finished your degree, you can perhaps highlight that instead.

Boyfriend: Who is David Bowie?
Me: Shows him picture.
Boyfriend: What are some of his songs?
Me: Plays space oddity.
Boyfriend: This song blows.
Me: Hangs head low while shaking it in shame.

Oh my god... This made me want to change my answer. When people ask what I'm researching... And I say "alpha particle thermochronology" the most awesome question I get about 95% of the time is
"Oh, so you're like, really smart... huh?"

OH MY GOD....
As a new student I'm currently getting to watch a video and take a test on sexual misconduct... and what "consent" actually means. Facepalm. It's like I'm a 17 year old kid again, not someone who's already birthed a child. Is this what the world has come to? This is an hour of my time completely wasted on moral values that should have been taught at home, not in a video from a university.

Now that we have finally finished moving... It has started shit pouring and will continue to shit pour for the discernable future. I really wanted to get used to this part of town and enjoy all the reasons that we moved here... But I guess I can't lol.
