So I had orientation for my new job today (also first shift right after) and on the way to orientation I got an email from Temple requesting an interview and at the start of my shift got an email from WSU with my acceptance. In short, it's been a good day. 

@GreenEyedTrombonist I can +1 on the PITA of divorce piece.  My former spouse and I were great friends, but shouldn't've ever gotten married.  I felt much the same way after my divorce, but I found another divorcee, and we have much better and more realistic expectations of one another and our partnership.  We got married, flash-mob-style, at the Shedd Aquarium.  Granddad was our witness, and we were briefly famous in Australia when he died.

Was anyone else accepted for UM College Park? Unfortunately can't go for the open house owing to work commitments, but would love to talk to anyone else accepted into the program!

That's so nice! I wish I could pay off $7,500 in 3 months but given my salary and cost-of-living...

I hear your pain.
That's actually the main reason that I didn't apply to UIC.  It's a great school and has people researching things I'm interested in, but I can't afford to stay in my condo and live here, even with a partner who has a job.  I just finished paying my student loans from undergrad; I want to minimize any more I have to pick up.

Just got invited to do an interview at UW-Madison! I had pretty much given up on that program after dwelling on this site. 

Goes to show that it ain't over until it's over. Hold out hope, anxiety buddies!

Northwestern decisions should be out any day now! I'm waiting for them as well. If I'm accepted to both that is such a difficult decision.

Yay! That's awesome. There's a professor at Cleveland State that I had a really awesome relationship with (I TA'd for her 2 semesters) who got her MA/PhD in BG's program and taught there for quite a while. Assuming everyone else in that department is as wonderful as she is, I'm sure  your friend will have a wonderful experience there.

I found out in the last two weeks that I am on the waitlist at both Cornell (Communication) and USC (Journalism/Mass Comm). I have an interview with Temple this week so we'll see how well that one goes! 
Good luck to all! I applied to a good handful of programs and some have not yet sent decisions, the waiting game is getting to me.

Status? Accepted by UofT woohoo! It's my top school, so I won't be waiting for Western's response  Wishing everyone the best!
re: funding for MA-- it's very rare in Canada iirc, but I'm not sure about the American system

@michellelaura92 Iowa is definitely near the top of my list, and my excitement is growing. I was less sure of my fit, but as I spoke with the faculty in interviews I could see really interesting angles I could take with my work that hadn't fully occurred to me yet. Very eager. The language of the email was "You are at the top of the waitlist, so there is a good chance that will be able to offer you admission should openings become available," and they invited me to the recruitment weekend, so hopefully it'll happen. Definitely appreciate the candor and detail; Minnesota is a program I am very interested in, but all they sent me a form email telling me I was on the waitlist and didn't respond to my follow-up inquiry.

@mintless, I'm a first year PhD student at Iowa with @pato's husband and I can guarantee that everything she said is true. I just want to speak a little to our department's take on the waitlist: 
The students they grab first generally fit the research interests of current faculty. At Iowa, we're strongly triangulating research on gender, LGBTQ topics, race, democracy, etc. Lots of social justice research happening here. There is no difference in academic caliber between students who are immediately accepted and those who are waitlisted. If you weren't rejected, Iowa wants you. They don't accept people without funding and that is why we waitlist more than we accept. It's a matter of funding availability and research fit. 
Iowa grads get jobs and I hope you consider us.

I'm joining @E-P @sriracha18 and @surprise_quiche in the rejection pile from them but I did expect this. In other news, I did get an acceptance from SUNY Buffalo with full funding for four years this morning, so I am really excited! My spouse was also accepted here with full funding as well. 
In other news, Cornell said they will be sending out admission decisions soon. My POI at UW-Milwaukee told me they will be evaluating admissions and initial funding on the 14th of this month!

After months of incredibly anxious waiting, I opened my email this evening to find an on campus interview invitiation!!! I whooped excitedly, haha. I’m just so happy to know that I have some sort of chance. But now I’m nervous about what to expect for an on campus interview ?

I don't know how common it is, but I would imagine you would have to have a one degree in the field or your dissertation would have to be very indepth in ethnography and a committee member that was an athropologist. I've seen many communication people in library science and sociology and English PhDs in communication department. It really depends on the job posting and the requirements in the job posting. It's all so varied.
