Enhydra got a reaction from poweredbycoldfusion in Seattle, WA
Most of the grad students that I know live either in Green Lake/ Phinney Ridge or Ravenna. Capital Hill is a great neighborhood, but pricey. South Lake Union has a lot of new apartments, but they are geared towards Amazon employees. My advice is to look at the bus routes connecting various neighborhoods to the UW and go from there (assuming you'll be taking public transit, as driving and parking are a pain in the ass in Seattle). For future planning, the light rail system is being extended to connect to campus, which should open up in 2016 or so.

Enhydra got a reaction from Kleene in That fake out moment!
I logged on to one of my applications last night and the first thing I saw was the word "Congratulations!" I freaked out... and then read a little further. "Congratulations, you've submitted your application!" -.-

Enhydra got a reaction from threading_the_neidl in For the seasoned interviewees: I have questions, (maybe) you have answers.
Generally it's seen as bad form, especially if the plane tickets have already been paid for. Many people have also reported shifting their school rankings around after visiting each program; what is your top choice now might not be so after going to all the interviews. However, if attending interviews is putting you in a difficult position financially you may have to cut some interviews... It's a difficult predicament. Hopefully some others can chime in with advice!

I would reply to say thanks and that you look forward to hearing from them. The prohibition on emailing them doesn't include responses to their emails. Just keep it short, enthusiastic and professional.

Basically anyone in this forum not applying to a biomedical program. Our deadlines are later and we get lost in the main thread so I thought I'd start a new one.
How's everyone's application season going? I just submitted my last application over the weekend (yay!) but I had one of my LOR writers miss a deadline (>.<).

Enhydra reacted to ss2player in 2015 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Well said, thank you! Yes, I was comparing having your own place. I'm with Vene and like having the ability to live on my own if I so choose; we shouldn't be forced into undergrad-like situations just to go to a great school/live in a great city, but of course for some folks it's not an issue.
I think I'm just sad some cities are pricing out a large portion of their residents. I come from the East Coast and NYC is doing the same thing; Manhattan is now just an amusement park for the rich for the most part, no working class people can afford to live there anymore. But this is a topic for the sociology forum.

I tend to prefer to live someplace where I can afford to not have roommates. It can make married life awkward. -

Enhydra reacted to lab ratta-tat-tat in Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?
My day today consisted of an important experiment-
Hypothesis: Investigating the inverse relationship between optimal tasting dipping sauce for tater tots and least soggy-ness
Prep time: 5 minutes- experimental design
5 minutes- deciding which sauces to try
25 minutes for the damn tater tots to cook
15 minutes to eat all tater tots with different sauces
20 minutes to write this post
Experimental design:
Sriacha
Chili garlic sauce
Jack daniels BBQ sauce
Results:
Sriacha, sweetest of the 3, made tater tots most soggy over all taste ranking 2/3
Chili garlic sauce, best flavor, least sogginess, over all taste ranking 1/3
BBQ sauce, its just damn BBQ sauce...sigh.... smoky flavoring though. overall taste ranking 3/3
OK thats how I deal with anxiety after submitting my applications.
