armchair_revolutionary got a reaction from trolleyproblem in Dear 2020 applicants...
I skimmed this thread and didn't see this posted: ask yourself if what most intrigues you in philosophy is done in other departments. I think this mostly applies to continental applicants. As you can see, I applied pretty widely across the humanities and social sciences and looked for programs not based solely on the label of the department, but, rather, based upon what sort of substantive work is going on in those departments. Applicants who work mainly in continental thought yet only apply to philosophy programs may be missing out on a range of options in comparative literature, political theory, and cultural studies to name just a few avenues worth investigating.

    Nope.
Tufts and Brandeis offer scholarships on a competitive basis. If you get one of those, then it may make sense to attend. Otherwise, you also shouldn't be going there. Same goes with NYU, Chicago, et al.
It's always a bad idea to take out loans for grad school in the humanities. A good MA is not a guarantee of getting into a PhD program. Furthermore, even if you do get into a PhD program, the job market is terrible and even if you do get a job, it's not likely to pay enough to allow you to pay off 50-100K+ in debt very quickly. Taking out loans for an MA in philosophy is just plain stupid.

A number of the top schools have terminal MA programs. However, these are by and large cash-cow programs. They're used to generate revenue for the department and keep seminar enrollments high. It's not a good idea to go to such programs because the PhD students at such departments get all the faculty attention and department funding. Seminars will also be designed with the training and experience of PhD students in mind.
These programs get away with what is, to be candid, a predatory money grab because students will pay the exorbitant tuition, blinded by the Chicago/Stanford/etc. name, not realizing that they're being hoodwinked. In addition to the aforementioned programs, other egregious offenders include: Columbia, CUNY Grad Center, and NYU.
Apply to funded MA programs. There are plenty of good ones out there.

Pace yourself, and don't try to read too much at once. Start with 10 pages a day, and work up to twenty. Keep an eye out for the main claim, and make a note of it once you find it (highlight it too!). Highlight the reasons offered in support of the claim, and make a note of those, too. But don't highlight too much!
As you're reading, write down the questions that occur to you. Also make a note of any thoughts or observations you have. When you're done, go back over your notes and see how it all fits together. Try to answer your questions.
And then, when you're done, write a brief summary of the chapter/article. Explain the main claim and its supporting premises, so that you can just read the quick summary later.
For books, reading book reviews can be helpful, since they're usually good at condensing the point and identifying flaws. But I suggest reading those only after you've read it, too, or once you're pretty far along. Best not to colour your views with someone else's!

This is simply false, and Duns Eith has given you a good resource for starting your search.
I think the problem might be that you're looking for the wrong credential. You're looking for a Master's in Ethics, as though that were a special credential. While a few programs may offer such a thing, what you're actually looking for is a Master's degree from a philosophy department. In the course of completing that credential, you can choose to specialize in ethics. So what you need to do is identify philosophy departments which will offer you a funded MA, and which have research strengths in ethics.
There are also quite a few bioethics Master's degrees, if that's what you're after. These are usually aimed at people who want to continue into a clinical environment (these people often have or are hoping to get some kind of medical qualification too, although it's not necessary). As a result, it's a degree that usually skews more to the practical than the theoretical. But there are lots of them around, and the job prospects are OK.

If you are looking to get an MA you have time to figure this out if you are ultimately looking to go the PhD route.
As for the previous poster mentioning the lack of aesthetics jobs I fear this is largely the case in philosophy. I would not say that is as much the case in comparative literature, so I would broaden your horizons to consider the work that is being done there.

    Agreeing with Hector here.
I can see wanting to take electives at an online program, but why would you take your major --especially in the Humanities-- at an online program?

Speaking in terms of institutional and program reputation, ASU would be the best. How well that would translate in terms of an online degree program, I'm unsure. However, ASU has some name-recognition in academic philosophy because it has a graduate program in philosophy with some areas of particular strength (though unranked), and more generally is a decent, reasonably well-known large public university. The other schools will not have any such name-recognition.
I can't speak to the online aspects of any of these programs, but I would ask you this--why do you want to pursue an online program? You'd be better served by completing your degree in-person rather than online if at all possible. A big part of a good philosophical education is talking to your classmates and interacting with faculty, and it's hard to replicate that adequately in an online space.

This isn't application- or admissions-specific, but an important piece of advice for aspiring philosophers is to keep an electronic doc or note (or I guess a paper notebook if you're old-school) where you write down any philosophical ideas, hypotheses, arguments, questions, objections, connections, etc. as you think of them. Link to relevant texts. This way you don't forget your ideas, and when you have to write a paper (without a prompt), you have a database of ideas to draw from and you're not starting from scratch.

If this statement accurately reflects your level of expertise, your GPA will not matter because your other application materials will reflect your skills.
However, the statement itself is controversial. It implies that you think that know more the debates than established scholars who are participating in those debates.

In combination with your proposed disclosure of your mental illness, the continued stigma surrounding mental illness in the Ivory Tower, and the unknowable experiences of departments to which you may apply, your self assessments of your skills may all combine to make you a less competitive candidate than you actually are.
IME, established academics do not discourage undergraduates, aspiring graduate students, and graduate students from thinking that they're the bees' knees. Instead, they frequently give a slight nod, take a step back, and let the dynamic take its course.

Unfortunately the answer is a cold hard no. If you back out now a call will be put out for your detainment by the Inter-university Police. You will be found and held, forced to finish the terms of your accepted offer. At the conclusion of these terms, you will be placed in a black list among all degree granting institutions barring your employment there on grounds of disrespect to the high authority of the Ivory Tower.

You ought to think these things through beforehand...

I haven't heard of Stanford's MA in philosophy.
I don't know whether I grasp your situation well -- you turned down the other MAs in favor of Stanford's silence? Or was that independent of Stanford's decision?
For whatever it is worth, I don't expect an offer to come after April 15 if you haven't heard anything yet. Email them?
