I KNOW?!?! I feel like someone's punking us just to see how we react. Plus its after business hours so decisions shouldn't be coming out now, right??

Just a general statistic for y'all. I tallied the application rates by region and 5,044 applicants applied for research this year (if my math is correct). So...for even getting through this first round -- congratulations to everyone! Same goes for ETA.

Damn... mad props to five Andorra ETAs who did the legwork to become advanced speakers of Catalan (per the program requirements).

Oh my god, seriously!!!! This is the best thing I've seen all day. Haha

Honestly, I almost regret telling so many people about my application. It's nice that people care and all, but every five minutes, someone's like "so, have you heard yet?!" and I'm just like... "FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, I WILL TELL YOU WHEN I KNOW, OKAY?!?!!"

I applied to my university (University of Exeter) as soon as I got the Fulbright Recommendation email - I figured it could only help my application. I also thought that if the Commission had to make a choice between someone who had already applied and been accepted to the university and someone who was still waiting to apply, it would show them how dedicated I am to using the Fulbright award. That's just me, though - good luck to you both!

Okay well, I was getting to be in a good place but now with all of these notifications I'm losing my mind all over again.

I love that you guys are all getting responses like that from your parents. My dad still goes, "Where's Macedonia, again?"

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. I'm doing this. I can't handle the anxiety and need another barrier between me and the decision. hahaha.

You can always do Fulbright after (or even during) your graduate studies. I'd go with the guarantee, especially if it's going to work out to bring your lady.

    Congrats everyone! This is awesome!

I don't know how I feel about the decision in the subject line. On the one hand, I appreciate the decisiveness. On the other, I would prefer to see that I have the email so I can read it when I'm not in public.

At any rate, I'll just quietly go back to refreshing my email.

    Hi there,

I've been trying to post less on this forum because I feel like I'm on here way too much (read: I KNOW I'm on here way too much) but I love this question!
My program (Jordan ETA) doesn't have a language requirement per se, but it does recommend one year of Arabic study. I took a year of Arabic at my University and studied abroad in Morocco during undergrad, as well as interned in Palestine for about three months immediately following graduation.

I know that this is probably fairly cliche, but linguistic and cultural immersion is truly the best way to become proficient in a foreign language. This has also been backed up far-and-wide by linguistic scholars (my own major was Linguistics in college).

This doesn't necessarily mean you need to leave the country to work on your language, depending on circumstances - although I'd always recommend finding a way to swing a stint outside of the US. For example, if Spanish is your target language, finding a nonprofit to volunteer with that serves immigrants might be a way to practice as you simultaneously take lessons/classes. After taking a year of college Spanish in high school, I found it very beneficial to practice the language in my AmeriCorps role during my gap year as many of my students were Spanish-speaking ELL kids.

Further, online resources such as ConversationExchange.com are incredibly helpful if you're willing to be consistent with it. I met one of my great friends through this, and he visited me in Seattle last year. I'll also be going to Colombia relatively soon to see him, as well! You never know what will happen.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

This is incredibly helpful, at the very least for those applying to Russia.

Of course, I'm applying elsewhere, so I'll return now to just rocking myself back and forth in the corner, stopping only to refresh my email...
