Ok - well all I can say is that my grad school literally send out an email to not tell bullshit (not with those words) to international students after some faculty member apparently made a promise to an incoming international student about the current situation they can't (legally) live up to. This seemed to be the case because the student was part of a grant that didn't this. And can say I have been misinformed by my own International Office also more than ones (regarding work authorization on campus for J1s and it not being needed - my friend got in trouble over this), but that was in person (their website is correct). But then again, my advisor also told me last year there wasn't an issue if I would arrive about a month - month and a half late (so I could take more time of some other paperwork issues), even though that is not allowed.
it will generally be correct indeed in official communication. I don't know what rumors I'm spreading other than to cross check any information you're given if it is not through 'official' channels (e.g., your advisor saying things with the best intentions; other grad students). All I'm spreading here is the offical information I got from MY international office - I guess you could also call them facts? Or because they're from a different school they're rumors?
I may not be in your situation but I am just as much an international student

Just FYI: Policies vary a lot per school too (Duke for example has an excellent webpage; but see also how it differs from for example Cornell)

At least at my Uni, we've been told that that's not possible, there are regulations that prohibit them from depositing in a non-US account and they are not willing to pay for off-campus work.

Regarding financials in general, if we arrive late, that wouldn't be a problem although we'll have to discuss the stipend with our advisor, given that they have reassign that money to pay for other stuff. However, if we arrive in fall 2021, that's another fiscal year and therefore we wouldn't have neither the stipend nor the tuition remission available. We would need to apply again for those, knowing that universities' budgets will be under financial strain because of the pandemic.

Are there any other incoming international students who were informed by your departments that classes would be 100% online for the fall?
if so, did they comment on how that would affect eligibility for a student visa since DHS regulations limit the number of online credits a student can take to maintain visa eligibility?

Unfortunately, my request was denied. I received the following message:

I should add that the city this Embassy is in is in partial lockdown. Therefore, don't take this response as gospel if your local embassy is under different circumstances.
I also found it interesting that they told me not to resubmit any requests more than 20 days prior my travel date while every other website says there can only be a single request.

Today I was encouraged by International Students Services to apply for an expedite appointment with my embassy. I called beforehand to the visa call center in order to confirm I'm eligible and they told me I am indeed under point c. I am now applying for an expedite appointment, I'll let you know how it goes.

For a long time, anthropology has been an extremely reflexive discipline, and the ethics of fieldwork are a major topic of scholarship. It would surprise me if this applicant aroused any suspicion for discussing this.

By being close to campus, you will be able to meet with professors in person (with the appropriate amount of social distancing). If you're able to make the most of such opportunities, you will be getting more out of your education than if you had stayed where you are now.
Also, by being in the area, you will have an advantage when it comes to finding places to live and maybe even work.

No. Because the toes stepped on have to respect the hell out of my work and my prominent external recognition.
Maybe my perspective is based on being a WOC, who learned very quickly that the institution of academia regularly grinds out POC. Not to mention that I would not have the CV I have without these core values being at the forefront of my work and experience.
I'm curious about what two ways of transformation you mean. Personality wise? Public speaking? Writing skills? Or is it just intellectual?

I must admit that I steamrolled over my department culture to get my way on the topic of alt-ac training. Have I stepped on toes? Hell yes. But the pros of taking care of myself and connecting with people inside and outside of academia who valued the type of work I value outweighed the cons of diminishing myself to jump through hoops that have only wzbeen maintained by "tradition."
I also was very explicit in my personal statements about how vital my work experience has been to my scholarship. Mostly because I was naive about the resistance to PhD students who are ambivalent about academia haha! The coronavirus pandemic may make graduate admissions tighten their belts against "ambivalent" students or it may be more eager to accept students who aren't dead set on a tenure track faculty position. Either way, it's always better to be yourself and to go into this knowing what you want out of the experience.

Check out on and off campus independent newspapers and blogs. Vancouver has a slew of them (though I think the Georgia straight was just bought up??? RIP my angel?).

Finally heard from Michigan today. They said they're not taking anyone off of the waitlist this season because of financial restraints due to COVID-19. I'm not shocked, the odds were stacked against me (in terms of the amount of people who still had to make their final decisions) and I wouldn't have been able to make an informed decision had they accepted me, but it does still sting a little bit.
Onward and upwards, I accepted my offer from Indiana University and I'll be moving to the Midwest in the summer! Good luck to anyone else still on the waitlist, I know it's rough with only one week to go, but I hope it's good news.

Well, I accepted UBC! Brief moment of alarm that on the portal is said "offer declined" but that's because the original decision date was March 24th, but it was extended by the department head until March 31st (in writing) and I think the portal just didn't know? Anyway, this means I'm going to start rejecting some other schools so hopefully that'll open up some waitlists!

Do you guys think it's worth asking the program where I will most likely go if they offer any help with moving expenses? I know it's not common at this level, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this or heard of anyone actually succeeding at it.

Ooof. Brown must be doing something right, because we had double the yield we wanted. Those planning on applying for the next few years beware, as the number of slots is going to go down for a little while.

For those of you reaching out to students of professors, try your best to get a range of years. Someone finishing their dissertation is going to have a radically different view of a professor as a mentor compared to a current first or second year, especially since most departments are in the midst of "redefining what it means to do a PhD in History." As noted earlier, offer to call the student if you want them to be a bit more candid. Politics are a real thing in grad school and it is best to start learning how to play / avoid the game.

I meant to ask that as well! Columbia is potentially doing the same. Though they will reimburse us even if we cancel the trip, I possibly don't know how I can decide where to go by April 15th without having visited all schools. I am/was? supposed to do two visits in 10 days.
Coming from abroad, the teleconference idea seems so unfit. I've already had Skype sessions with my POI prior to acceptance, so it's more a matter of needing to meet the faculty, cohort, hearing about the program, and asking questions to current grad students. And I guess we won't be given more time to decide...!

I highly recommend reading the article  Hiding It from the Kids (With Apologies to Simon and Garfunkel) (1999) by Gerald Graff and Andrew Hoberek (former director & assistant director). While it was admittedly written over twenty years ago, I found it really helpful in informing my thinking about the MAPH program as well as constructing strong statements for this round in general.
