It’s really unfair. The acceptance letter says that we *have* to turn down FRQSC if we get sshrc as well (i.e. there’s no option to choose FRQSC instead) so it’s like their main worry is saving money. And then they go on to talk about the importance of supporting young researchers...

I have applied to many grants, big and small. Nothing happened for 3 years, this year finally went through. I almost had a mental breakdown this winter. I was not even sure if is worth continuing my PhD. It is mentally and financially challenging, but do not let any of this selection processes in which one loses their sense of touch to reality get in your way and disturb you from moving forward. Next year, next applications, next projects you will only get better and you will only get to find other ways to recalibrate your projects. If we were in an egalitarian society in which research and knowledge production was deemed more valuable we would all have been less nervous when it came to a basic income and finance system to simply do research. I send you good energies, don't give up.

It definitely seems they’re uploading things gradually. I got the award but my profile didn’t change until this morning, even though some people seemed to find out at midnight or overnight

Got the email in Quebec around 2:30 EST, last name near the end of the alphabet, committee 4. Seems totally random and probably doesn’t mean anything.

Honestly, there’s no way to predict success in this process and you’ll make yourself crazy trying. Assuming you have decent credentials, everything else is up to fit, politics, and a lot of luck.

For example, I was not a great applicant (unlike a lot of you guys!). Good GPA/GRE, but weaker CV because I was at a low ranked rural undergrad. Yet I got accepted into some programs over other interviewees with many more publications and presentations (I know because I googled them...). On paper, they probably deserved it more than me, but that proves you never know how admissions will turn out.

It looks like you chose schools within a pretty narrow geographic range. How was your research fit and fit with the programs? Faculty can tell when people are truly interested in their research vs. applying because they like the location.

Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any fellowship/scholarships in Canada (other than the obvious Tri-Council/OGS/FRQ). I want to maximize my chances for funding, but I don't know if any other opportunities exist. I'm in clinical psychology if anyone knows of anything relevant, but I'd be interested in hearing from people in other fields as well because it might help someone else!

On top of Vanier, it’s also common for people to get the CGS, but downgrade to the fellowship because they’re in the US. In that case, someone with the fellowship is upgrade to CGS and someone on the waitlist will get the fellowship.

I think NSERC and CIHR do it like that, or similarly. There’s absolutely no reason why SSHRC can’t do the same thing. It bothers me that they have so little consideration for applicants.

I got a similar email from my grad awards officer about a week ago, but it looked like it was sent to all current SSHRC holders (I have an MA SSHRC this year).

I applied the fall after I finished undergrad. I was accepted at 22 and started soon after turning 23. I kind of wish I had waited longer, and my other classmates in the 22-24ish range felt similarly. Not to say that younger students are immature or unprepared, I just feel that I lack perspective and experience outside of academia compared to some.

I heard the same thing. The application packages were probably delayed in getting to Ottawa.
If only SSHRC would switch to online applications/notification like CIHR and NSERC have been doing for years...
