Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from Neist in We've wined, we've waited, now it's time to celebrate 2016
@Neist I also feel the same way. I'm not going into academia, I want to eventually work in a science museum/center, national/state park, or a library. I kinda feel like I have a professional mindset, instead of an intellectual mindset when it comes to grad school. I'm mainly here so I can earn more money/make myself look more attractive to employers. But I'm also refreshing my portal to see if my grades have been uploaded yet ha.

    FTFY.
I'm done. I'm just refreshing my screen to see my grades trickle in. I feel like I've set myself up for success this term by going above the requirements in my courses...but even though I participated heavily in every class and turned in the requisite papers, I feel like there's always going to be a curve ball grade submitted. Ugh. I do feel like I've been really productive this term though, so there's that. I applied to/got accepted to a language program over the summer, submitted a fellowship application to fund said program, drafted an abstract that was accepted for a conference this spring, and serve on the GSA...I capped off the term with a lovely bout of bronchitis, so it's trashy tv and internet surfing today and tomorrow. Not hating it.

Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from AP in Reading During the Winter Break: A Bad Idea?
@Neist My background is a BS in geology and several years of work experience in museums. Where I got my BS from, there aren't any reptiles or dinosaurs so my professors never really got into details. My knowledge prior was pretty much knowing the geological ages that these species lived in. So it is hard but I'm trying to catch up. The general background of museum science won't be hard. I just like improving my knowledge when I can. My eventual goal is to work in a science museum, national/state park, or a library.

@Neist Sorry about the scholarship! I'm officially done, turned in my paper last night. All I need to do now is wait for grades

@MarineBluePsy I work as a graduate assistant for the museum! I float between the paleontology division and the registrar division.

I also find my readings to be boring. What I do is write down notes as I go along and questions/points that I think of while I'm reading. This way I actually have something to say in class.

Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from IslamicStudiesMA17 in Is it necessary to contact potential POIs for masters programs?
I did! I think it was worth it even though I'm not sure if it helped much. It helped me manage my expectations too. For instance, one POI from boulder seem really interested while the other one thought I needed work experience before coming to their program. So after that encounter I knew I had a very slim chance of acceptance. But the times I did have a nice rapport, I was accepted to that school.

Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from lovekilledinos in What courses are you taking your first semester/quarter?
I'm super excited for my classes! I'm taking museums collections management, principles of heritage management, and curatorial methodology. @pterosaur My program reccomends only taking three classes ( nine credits). There's no shopping but i'll get more freedom in my second year.

@Pink Fuzzy Bunny He's going to be working in a government office that deals with soil and making sure farmers have the right permits, the soil is still good, etc. It will give him an idea whether he would like to be in the office side of things or be part of the soil technician side. Its what he wants and the benefits/lifestyle will be great. Money is ok but we live a low cost lifestyle! We are super excited. Thanks!

Thanks for the stories and perspectives everyone! From hearing your stories and talking with older grad students, I feel really positive about the future. People (myself included) will be awkward sometimes, misunderstandings will happen, and transitioning from one class to another isn't easy, but it's ultimately a positive thing.

I can only speak for myself but I'm on the opposite side of the fence. My parents have helped me throughout undergrad and I'm very lucky to have zero loans. I also was smart enough to use this time wisely and put a lot of money towards my savings. Now I'm mostly independent, they offered to help pay my tuition. I went instate for undergrad and I had access to affordable four-year schools. With the fellowships I was given, it brought down the price significantly for grad school. My parents offered and I didn't see any reason not to accept. I'm going to a masters program so it isn't completely funded.
I'm applying for part time jobs now but with my parents help I don't feel the pressure of getting a full time job. Also living with my bf helps with the cost of living. Of course I never bragged and only talked this with close friends. Not sure about anyone else but I know that I never meant to make anyone feel uncomfortable. I do know my peers liked to comment "how I always dressed so fancy" when all I was wearing was a dress or a sweater/jeans. I won't understand the struggles completely since I haven't experienced it for myself. But my close/best friends come from less privilege means so I'm not oblivious. I like to joke that my sense of reality is a little bit better than Lucille Bluth.

I do this all the time! I think its a good idea to see whether you will be able to get a job. I feel that way all the time, too bad they don't realize how big of a deal we are .

@Neist That's something we can agree on! I like to avoid working with friends unless I know that we have similar work ethics. Some people just don't care, and thats fine for them. But I view my work as an extension of my reputation and I care about that very much. I've lost some friends over this and it makes me sad. They let me down at work and took advantage of me. I usually just give one chance and thats it.

@rhombusbombus Ah that sounds like the perfect nap situation but the worst at being productive! I have to have a cup of coffee with me so I don't fall asleep ha. I'm reading a book that's about grant writing/seeking. Its full of info so that's a good/bad thing . I feel like gaston at times "how can you read this without pictures?!"

Ah well thats kinda awkward! Hopefully you guys mesh better after awhile. And my brain would melt too, just imagine the scene from Indiana Jones when the nazis faces are melting. I feel that one after just reading one chapter when it comes to textbooks.

@Danger_Zone Ah that sucks but I can see how it will mess up your immigration status. And don't feel bad, your cat will be fine! I missed my family dog so much butt he turned out ok and he still remembered me when I visited. He is the best friend anyone would want. @Pink Fuzzy Bunny Good news that you weren't in the car! sounds like some final destination experience. @MarineBluePsy Yeah I would get out of that house before you go all Jack Nicholson on them . @Neist yeah i bet that is a weird feeling. I feel weird not working at my old museum and I was only there for 3 years. But i think of it as my baby. I cant wait to see it when it finally opens!

I agree with @sjoh197. That class seems to be the one you are really interested in. If not that class, I would choose remote sensing. You will most likely be exposed to equipment and its really fun stuff. I would stay away from Differential Equations, but thats because it looked awful haha. Bf took it and his assignments scared me. (I graduated with a bachelors in geology)

I would apply, the worst they can say is no! I would definitely highlight your experience and show how you have been exposed to research through theory. Then you can go in detail how you would be eager to learn the applicable/practical side of your field

Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from ihatechoosingusernames in To live alone or not to...that is the question
I would choose to live alone but I need to be alone to mentally decompress after being "on" all day. But I'll be living with my boyfriend so we are splitting things. I don't think roommates will always be awful. Its really up to you. I wouldn't live with a friend though. Working/living with friends seem to be the situations that become horror stories.
