Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from littlemoondragon in PhD vs MPP vs Taking Time Off
I really think you should take time off. You shouldn't be in a rush, grad school will always be there! And just because your advisor is saying go to grad school doesn't mean you should. Try working for a couple of years and then see what you really want. I'm a senior in undergrad so I get it.But you don't seem committed to either option.

Yeah this time of year is super annoying! I didn't find out a school didn't have my transcripts until I emailed them 2 days ago and their deadline was Jan 15th.....Look you have been waiting for almost 4 months now for a decision. I would send another email saying how you are looking forward to coming to this program for the fall semester and were curious on the status update on your application. If that makes them reject you, then I think you dodged a bullet. People even grad school prof/administration need to be held accountable and if your email makes them uncomfortable it should. They have been blowing you off.

Hey I'm bumping this thread! My boyfriend and I are most likely moving to Lubbock for my MA. We are young but we don't want to be surrounded by undergrads. We also would like a quite and safe neighborhood. We are looking to rent a house. Any recommendations? Also how is the pace of life? We would think it would be slower, which is what we want. How's the overall vibe of the culture? Does the city feel safe and friendly? We are mainly democratic when it comes to social issues (lgbt rights, pro-choice, anti religious laws) but aren't organizing rallies. Thanks for any answers!

Need Coffee in an IV reacted to DrZoidberg in Boyfriend and grad school... How to manage
Do not turn down an offer because it is 1.2 hours from your boyfriend. Turn it down if you don't like it there or find a better place or it is a toxic environment but do not do it because of a commute which is doable.
You can absolutely do your degree and live with your boyfriend if you want. My partner's job is 2 hours from my position. I commute 1.5 hours each way, he commutes 30 minutes. It's not great, commuting is tough, and if it wasn't because I start my PhD in a few months closer to his work we would have found a home halfway. But that would have been fine for both of us, if we both get to do what we love while being together, we can deal with a commute of ~ 1 hour. A lot of grad students are not so lucky. Your boyfriend moved halfway across the country and you managed to get into a program that is in driving distance of his job - that is a pretty difficult thing to do, so congratulations! Remember that your dreams and aspirations are important and worth the effort. Ask him to find something halfway between your school and his job, or whatever makes sense for driving/public transport. Good relationships should be able to deal with these kinds of compromises and this is definitely not a situation where you should feel like you have to chose between your relationship and your career. And if your boyfriend makes you feel like that, then you should seriously ask yourself whether that is a reasonable request.

I don't think you need to go heavy on the emotion. They should know its a possibility that you will choose another school or not go to grad school at all. I would just say
    "Dear Dr. X,
Thank you for taking the time to talk to me and show me around the program. This program and the people within it are wonderful scholars and people. I'm emailing to inform you however, that I have chosen another school for my graduate studies. I look forward to future correspdonce and seeing you at future conferences."
    Sincerely,

They are giving me some funding and I may receive more! I'm talking to my POI tomorrow and I'm waiting for the letter so I'll have more info. Luckily I don't mind making decisions, I just dislike the waiting I have to do haha.

Need Coffee in an IV got a reaction from RCtheSS in Leaving the family business for peace of mind before starting grad school - good idea?
It sounds more than reasonable to me! Just because someone is related to you doesn't mean they get a free pass on taking advantage of you, What I would do is give them a hard deadline for when you are leaving. Then leave/resign on that date. If they didn't take you seriously and they didn't hire anyone thats on them. Sometimes we have to firmly establish boundaries with our families.

Does your boyfriend realize how much of an impact that he's having on your choices? I know my boyfriend would be floored/unhappy if I choose an unfunded program over a funded one partly because of him. Then again we are all different. I would choose the small town with no debt than big city with big debt. You could always visit Seattle for day trips. But if you made up your mind then no one here can say anything.  Good luck!

Thanks for that! I was thinking the same thing, but I wanted to get non-bias opinions on the matter. Oh trust me, if I ever had kids/grandkids I would definitely help out. Not sure if I would be able to pay for everything though, since college tuition is pretty much worth more than my kidneys ha.

Good advice. I don't think I'll do the night driving part, though, just because I have literally watched every season of iD's Disappeared and that's how every woman in every episode winds up kidnapped.

Guys, I have huge news, though. I got into my chosen program. Shaking, crying, and in utter disbelief. Much love and good luck to you all, and may the Ides of March be ever in your favor. <3
