speechfan222 got a reaction from MettaSutta in Job Opportunities with a MA in Sociology
    Hi everyone,
I am a current graduate student in a Masters program in Sociology and will graduate this December. I am looking into employment opportunities for those with a masters degree in Sociology. I am most interested in research, data collection/analysis, and statistics. I have a few questions regarding employment and am hoping a few of you could help me. I have already contacted my program advisor and a few faculty within my department.
I understand most universities, anywhere, require PhD's for research positions. Does this mean I would be able to conduct research within a large research company or with a private company?    Do you know if companies require a PhD as universities do, or is it a preference of each company? I have already contacted a few research companies locally and was not provided with detailed information as they are not hiring and do not have any available positions.   I am also interested in medicine and the medical field. Would I be able to conduct or assist with research within a hospital, or would a MD/PhD degree be required?    Finally, I am aware of companies whose primary focus is not research but have a research department. Is this an opportunity available to those with a masters degree in Sociology?   I have already tried to research my questions, but I am having a hard time finding information. I am new to this field and really enjoy research and statistics, so I am looking for more information that will allow me to gain research employment after graduation.    Please, please, please direct me to other helpful information that can assist me with my questions. I appreciate it. Thank you.

I am starting a masters program in Sociology in just a few weeks. Once I receive my MA degree, I would like to go into the data analysis/statistics field.
I have been looking for data analysis positions to view the requirements and what the jobs entails. I have noticed most positions require several years experience. I am new to this field and do not have any experience. Would submitting a cover letter with my skills and abilities be enough to become employed without experience? I would like to work in the field now while completing my degree so that I can gain experience, but it seems impossible being able to gain experience without having any to start with.
Im somewhat worried that I wont be able to get a data analyst job once I receive my degree because I dont have the required experience.
    Please help!! Im worried....

Im a huge bookworm and love to read. Once I finish a book, Im always excited to start another one. I will be starting a Masters program this Fall and once that begins, reading for leisure is over. I have about 6 weeks until school begins and am trying to enjoy the rest of my summer.
The library (Yes I still love going to the library. Go ahead and laugh now) has a few books available from my to read list. One of them is 600 pages and I really want to read it. I know I cant finish it before school starts and wont have time to read much throughout the semester.
I need your help. Should I start the book anyway and enjoy it for now, or should I choose another shorter book that I may be able to finish before school starts?
Thanks for the help. I need everyones suggestions. Im a bookworm and just love to read!!

That's true. I didn't think of that. I know some professors keep the same syllabus and just change a few things from semester to semester.
You have a point. I'm definitely going to try and enjoy the rest of the summer. Once courses start this Fall, there isn't much of a break until I'm finished.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm currently reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It's a great book. I really enjoy how it's written. I'm a little behind in having a chance to read the book once it was published, but reading it now. About half way through and trying to finish it as soon as I can. Classes start in 11 days and I'm pretty sure I won't have much time for reading fiction books. If I don't finish it in time, I will definitely read at night before bed.

The anticipation while waiting for letters is killing me!! I was originally told October 1st, but one university got behind with decisions and promised it would be this week. Ahhhhh.
Any suggestions for easing the anticipation besides just trying to ignore it? Ahhhh!!

speechfan222 got a reaction from babykoala in SLP Programs with more of a medical focus: Can anyone add to my list?
I didn't even know there are SLP programs with a medical focus. I applied to a few traditional SLP online programs. I would be interested in applying to these, but I need programs that offer an online option. I don't believe any of these have that option. Does a Masters degree in SLP with a medical focus provide more job opportunities, or just a better chance at being an SLP in medical type setting?
This is an interesting post. Thanks!

I can't believe we could get an SLPA certificate in just 12 months. I was considering that for experience, but it's actually 2.00 less than I'm making now as a certified pharmacy technician. So, I said forget about the experience. I'll stay at my current job and keep the extra 2.00/hr. I hope not having much experience isn't a bad thing for my application. I guess I'll have to see. I thought NYU would be pretty competitive, so I was hesitant about applying, but I decided to anyway. I'm really hoping we both get in.
Haha. I just laughed out loud! I saw a post the other day. Somebody with a GPA of 3.9 said it was low and they were worried about getting accepted. Oh please. It's nearly perfect. Shush! Hahaha.
When did you submit your application to NYU? I submitted mine about three weeks ago. I got a voicemail message this morning saying that all documents including recommendation letters were received and my application was sent to the graduate committee for decision. I'm just crossing my fingers. Hoping I get in. I hope WE get in!
Good luck and Happy Turkey Day!!

I'm interested in SLP programs and have already applied to a few. Which universities or programs have you found that are medically based? I didn't know there was a medical program at all. I know you can work in a medical setting (hospital or rehab) with a Masters in Speech Pathology, but didn't know about a medically based SLP program. Are these medical-related courses?

    speechfan222 got a reaction from CCCaffeinated-SLP in LORs: Should I request a 4th?
I don't think a 4th LOR would be a bad idea. As you said, it's always best to have an extra one just in case you aren't able to get 3 from the other recommenders.
I only submitted the required LOR's needed for each application, but I have a few extras just in case. I did get one from my boss as well. I figured it would be a good idea.
I noticed you're applying to SLP programs. I'm applying to the same as well. Which programs are you applying to?

I'm just curious if anyone else is going crazy waiting for acceptance letters? I'm still waiting to receive letters from two online programs. I'm not sure If the online programs take longer than normal or if that doesn't make a difference. I was originally told October 1st, and I'm still waiting. I know there are several applications and required materials to go through for each student, but it should not take this long. I'm tired of waiting!
I'm going to check the mail today and hopefully there is something there.

speechfan222 got a reaction from sailormina in Advice Needed (please!) for Speech Therapy/ SLP programs!
    Hello!
If you are really interested in the field of Speech Pathology, I would definitely consider completing the post-back program that would allow you to complete the courses needed to pursue a Masters degree in the field.
I submitted applications to several online speech pathology programs and I would not suggest becoming an SLPA, but that's all up to you. They can provide therapy and documentation, but of course under the supervision of a licensed SLP. SLPA's are limited to the work they can do and are not allowed to hold meetings, create/write an IEP, or make any IEP changes. I decided if I'm going to major in Speech Pathology, I want a Masters degree that will allow me to do all of the work and requirements of an SLP. I don't want to be limited or have to work with someone else and be supervised.
I hope this information helps. If you have other questions, don't be afraid to ask. I'll try and help!!

speechfan222 reacted to Beals in Evening Food/Dining
I'm pretty passionate about healthy eating and budgeting.  Which means I cook a lot, and seldom eat out (for reasons of both physical and financial health). Which means I pre-prepare food and take it with me no matter where I'm going (if I'm going to be on campus all day that means I bring 3-4 containers of food... yeah, I'm that weird girl!).

Due to time and financial constraints I like to bulk cook.  I plan for each meal I make to feed me around 5 servings.  This conserves both time and money, and if I have the freezer space and it's a meal that lends itself well to freezing I'll make a double batch.

A website I like is budgetbytes.com.  She has good, simple recipes, that will feed you several servings, and she's very $$ conscious.  She uses a lot of canned/packaged stuff, but it's very easy to modify that if you'd rather use fresh.  This is a good beginning website and as (if? I guess not everyone likes cooking) you get more ambitious/ find out your cooking style you can find others to replace/supplement it.   I love cooking so if you want to talk recipes I would love to.

I also pre-prepare fresh veggies for snacks one day per week (cut up a couple carrots, peppers, cauliflower, etc.), and that way I have a quick and healthy snack to take with me wherever I go!  I usually bring hummus along too.
During my MA I never had evening classes, but I would brings snacks to eat during my day classes.  It wasn't a problem, and in a few of my classes we had a 'snack rotation' and someone was responsible for bringing food each week.  It was pretty neat.

    Hi everyone!
I see that there are a bunch of SLP forums for applicants from other states but none for California applicants, therefore I decided to start one for all of us applying to schools in CA!
For myself personally, I am applying to CSUS, CSUEB, UoP, SJSU and CSULA. My GPA is pretty high but I am extremely concerned about my low GRE score and lack of experience in the field. I have not heard back from any of the schools yet but I am hoping to hear back from them soon!
Feel free to comment on which schools you have applied to, your stats and any questions or concerns =).
