HI GUYS! Been reading this thread for a while now. This year and last year's has been extremely helpful. Wish I had found this sooner. After a couple years of interviewing at Yale (but no acceptance) I have decided to apply to different places that fit my needs and style better.

Applied to: CMU, CalArts and possibly Brown.

CalArts' lack of funding does scare me in this industry.

On the fence about Brown. Can't really get a feel for what their program is about from their website. Their deadline extended to January 8th, so I have 4 days to decide.

Already got an interview for CalArts! Evidently CMU interviews everyone for first round. WELP - interview season is quickly approaching...!

    Wishing you all luck!

I hear you about Brown's website. I know the program is great, but Brown's own description is very dry. You can get more colorful insights from the Trinity Rep page though.

Got a call from Yale for an interview today--this is earlier than I was expecting to possibly hear from anyone, so it came as a doubly big surprise. Has anyone else gotten a call? (If so, congrats!)

p.s. It did definitely sound like they would still be making calls for a couple days, too.

    Congrats!

  3. Here we go again! Wooooooooo!

I got tantalizingly, frustratingly, maddeningly close to a couple programs last year (wait lists are fun!) so I'm taking one more shot. I'm going the URTAS rout for the first time to simplify things. Think I'll do the Chicago days.

My list: University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon, Arizona State, DePaul, Indiana, CalArts, UCLA, UT Austin.  I've had previous interviews at several of them the past two years.  Might throw in Yale because I haven't yet and YOLO!

My background: Raised in the Northwest, educated in the South, professionally based in DC. Got started late, didn't study in undergrad beyond the occasional elective. My first professional gig was sweeping the floors for a Diane Paulus show. My training and professional background are in journalism and public relations.  I've got about ten years of new play development experience. Working directly with playwrights is my passion. I do a lot of interactive works. Founded my own production company, which has done 6 world premieres and a few 2nd productions. My most recent gigs were directing a one-man show at the local Fringe festival over the summer and a workshop at the Kennedy Center a couple of weeks ago. Been an arts fellow for the District of Columbia the past two years. Spent last year a guest editor for an arts magazine. A couple of my commissions have spread through the regional circuit. I'm a founding member of the 2020 Jubilee National Committee.

Would love to hear more about y'all's work!

  4. Hi all! Quick update, that's going to sound very familiar: my interviews with UCLA and CMU were much in line with everybody else's. As for Iowa, I absolutely loved my conversation with Alan MacVey. It was far-reaching but specific and informative. He's a very good interviewer. At the moment, Iowa is my top choice. No word from UCSD or Arizona State.

Anyone hear anything from UCSD? I figure it'll be another couple of weeks, but a guy can dream!

Have any of you told a lot of people that you're applying? When I applied straight out of undergrad (which I now realize was totally stupid of me), I told everyone and the constant questions of if I had heard something and the faces they would make when I got rejected have me playing this super close to the vest. Really only about five people know: my rec writers, my designer and my best friend and I have such a difficult time not talking about it- especially now that we're getting to interview season!

@GunningForGrad No word from UCSD here.

I've kept my application pretty close to my vest. Close friends only (and my rec writers but there is overlap there).

Wow I didn't expect them to do calls on a Friday. No Yale call for me as of yet. I guess I'll hold out hope until Tuesday before accepting my first reject. @Directorial do you know when your friend submitted their application?

I am afraid I don't. And she didn't get the call on Friday that is just when I heard about it.

    Hope everyone is doing okay!

Question: some schools are requesting a production book, and I have never been taught what all is supposed to go into one. The only example I've found looked like a class assignment from Winthrop. What all needs to be included? I have my journal I kept with notes and stuff, my promotional materials, and some stuff from designers. What is necessary, what isn't? Any help is appreciated!

    Yeah, they are almost certainly referring to your notebook for a particular production. Things that are often included/looked for;

    - Pre-production research

    - Production synopsis

    - Director's Notes

    - Annotated script with your notes/blocking/etc

    - Design images

You might also see the term "scored script" which is where they are looking for your annotated script with blocking notes, etc.

As for my own applications, I decided not to go the URTAS route for scheduling reasons. Thanks for the heads up on the Clean House proposal for Arizona State, the only school for which I've yet to finish my application. I did just hear from CMU and have my interview scheduled.

    Hello!

Happy I found your thread. I'm applying this year and I'm trying to make a game plan for travel to get to initial interview rounds. I thought I would see if anyone has found information that seems to be hiding from me.

    1. Yale, DePaul, and UCSD- do they publish the dates they would invite people out to the first round of interviews? I know other programs that do, but these are three that are on my shrinking list of top choices on where to apply and it would help if I could have an idea of when I may need to take off from work- and perhaps affect my city of choice for initial interviews. Thoughts? I may reach out to the schools and ask, but I don't want them to think I'm being presumptuous.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you this application season!

Yellow, I got my DePaul interview request on January 10th. This past year the interview dates were January 23rd (New York) and Feb 20th (Chicago).
