I feel like they have changed things lately. I know someone who was accepted without an interview, and this was just two years ago. Maybe they are trying something new this application season?

The waitlist w/o interview was two years ago, and the rejection w/o interview was last year. I'm guessing that it just varies on the person. I'm new to interviews in general--this was my first one--so I'm just info-dumping stuff I've heard from fellow students in my program.

My advisor gave me the best advice (I think) on this and just said that the interview absolutely doesn't mean you're accepted, but it's never a bad thing, and that no school is going to do an interview with people they aren't interested in. So whatever happens, we can all feel good about getting the interview. I know that for me, even if this application round doesn't work out, I'm happy to know that a school was interested enough in my work to want to hear more. :)

  2. Both times I've applied to grad programs, I've thanked my letter writers with a nice handwritten card and I've baked something for them. It was my way of doing something a *little* extra for them, but without the complicated monetary aspect. All three of my letter writers this time around love either my handmade raviolis or biscotti, so they got packages of either one.

  3. Hi everyone! Just thought I'd add my voice to the mix very late in the game. I also got a phone interview with Syracuse, and I think (???) I did well? Both people on the phone seemed to like my answers (or they at least had good follow up questions), and they both said they were very interested in my work, so I guess now is when I just cross my fingers and wait for the end of the month. At least I have company!

  4. Thanks for the advice everyone!

I've been weighing the options and I'm thinking I'm going to go for an iPad. I'm mostly interested in note-taking apps (Goodnotes sounds divine). I've switched to digital note-taking even though I prefer handwritten because I end up rewriting all of my notes anyway, so I might as well save some paper. I also figured that it would be nice to have something for recreation too--I have a super bad habit of trying to focus on Only Work At All Times, so I feel like something that encourages more opportunities for rest will be good for me.

I'm looking into the iPad Pro (it just looks really nice) but the keyboard is a whopping $150. Hooray for student discounts, at least?

  5. Hey everyone! I hope the accept/decline period of this process has been treating you all well.

Here's my situation: got a text from my grandma asking about a graduation present and she told me she wants to either get me a new computer or buy me an iPad. I just upgraded my computer over the summer, so that's not necessary, but I'm looking into the iPad. The thing is, she's being very generous with this gift and I want to make absolutely sure that it's worth it to get an iPad. I would hate to say I want one and then it turns out that there's not much I can use it for and it was a waste of her money to get it.

So, those of you with iPads- what do you use it for? Are there any apps that are especially helpful for an MA student? What are the benefits of using an iPad in class as opposed to just bringing my computer or taking notes by hand (which I've done the entirety of my undergrad)?

    Thanks to anyone who answers!

  6. My top choice school was a January 15th deadline. I was advised by a lot of my professors (many of whom also wrote my letters) to call them if I hadn't heard back by today. Called this morning and found out that they've been about three weeks behind on decisions but they're sending out the first round of acceptances via snail mail and email today and tomorrow. This is bringing a whole new meaning to "wine, wait, and whine". Can't wait till my classes are over so I can bust out some Syrah. I'm also wearing a very Stevie Nicks inspired outfit today in order to give me some witchy confidence vibes. :)

Good luck to everyone else who is waiting, and congratulations to those of you getting acceptances!

I don't know a lot about gender studies programs, but I'd just ask. :)

People are usually far more receptive to requests from accepted students, I've found. Once you've been accepted, they are, in theory, competing against other schools for your attendance.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely be calling the department.

  8. How's everyone hanging in there with the wait?

The one (1) entry for my top choice/program on the results board (that's from all the way back in 2008, I might add) quoted February 4th as the day they were notified. So basically I'm all kinds of stressed today.

To relax a little, my friend and I are going to see the Vagina Monologues (my university does them every year) and go for milkshakes and greasy diner food afterwards. I'm not yet sure if this will actually be a good enough distraction, but it'll be fun nonetheless.

Something really cute: I got my official acceptance letter to Delaware via website today (phone notification came Thursday), and when I clicked the link to the letter, the letter displayed on the screen as virtual confetti poured down as well! It was so cute! I'm always saying *throws confetti* in this and other threads, and I got some confetti from Delaware! So cute! The confetti was in the school colors, too!

Ooooh! I'd love to get some confetti. :D

    Congratulations!

  10. I had 3 apps due on January 15th, and 3 on the 31st.

Got an acceptance from one of the Jan. 15 schools via email five days after the deadline with an invite to visit (and they're paying for me to come out, too, which is ace).

My top choice school was a 1/15 deadline as well. There's only one posting on the results page and it dates back to 2008, so I'm not sure how accurate it is, BUT they said they were notified on February 4th. So basically I'm losing my mind waiting.

As far as how I'm staying sane? Netflix. So much L Word and Arrested Development. Oh, and some nice red wine. Gotta quell the anxiety somehow.

  11. Hi everyone!

I'm just wondering what the etiquette is for calling a program and asking about when they generally send out notifications. I was looking on the results search to try and get a feel for when they send their notifications on average, but the only entry I saw was from 2008.

So, basically- would it be rude of me to ask when they think they might be sending information out? Would it hurt my chances at all? I just want to get some advice before I consider calling and asking.
