Maybe I don't even want an MFA. Maybe I want to work for the FBI.

I would legit throw it all away to work in a basement office and report to a bald buff assistant director. LET'S DO IT

Have most of you heard back by now from all the programs you applied to? I just heard back from my last one, Florida (a rejection). Now waiting as patiently as I can for news on a few waitlists (all at tiny 2-3 person fiction programs). In all likelihood it'll probably be until April 15 before I know for sure where I'm going. The good news is that I'd be thrilled to attend any of the schools where I'm waitlisted, so keeping my fingers crossed!

Has anyone made a final decision yet on where you're going? Are others still holding out for programs where you've been waitlisted?

I'm headed to my #1 program this fall. I must've been a really good girl in some past life because I got an offer from what might've been another top choice. I withdrew from the Wisconsin, JHU, and UVA waitlists as soon as I made my decision so hopefully that helps.

"Year after year, their ranking of Columbia University—my alma mater—has steadily fallen. I can remember when it was in the toppermost tier."

"Columbia is a school for people who actually want to become better writers, get books published, and survive—or even thrive—in the rough-and-tumble world of American letters. It is not a holistic weekend retreat. Columbia is a place for people who want to be the best and study with the best. (Or, OK, the best after Iowa.) It's for people whose genitals still work, dammit. For writers who want to be brave and persevere in the real world where people often fail."

    Oy.

Lol. Who told him all of our loins were busted?? Fess up!

They don't order the waitlist. However, I sent an email and they said I probably should take one of my other offers because getting full funding was "highly unlikely." Makes sense given that they only have a few fully funded spots--in fact, some of the teaching positions seem to be half tuition and a small stipend. Which isn't great considering how expensive tuition is. I'm just going to take my name off the list.

Yeah, that's probably for the best. Makes you curious about what kind of applicant gets one of those precious few fully funded offers, though.

Ah, there we go, I made the NYU waitlist. Not too hopeful about my chances of getting funding.

    Congrats! NYU!!

Forgive my ignorance as I don't really know how waitlists work, but if someone turns down a funded offer does the program then take that same offer and give it to a waitlister? I know NYU has only a handful of those fellowships/work options but you never know, right?

Come on last couple of programs! Accept / reject me already--I want to feel done with this.

Same here. I pretty much have made my decision and I'm already excited to start but I feel like I need to wait for my last two programs before committing.

Thanks! I did have a drink actually! It's a good day--lots of stress lifted. Even if I didn't get into an MFA program I needed to switch jobs and would have had to go through applying etc. It would have been fine, but it would have been a lot of work / additional stress. Now I have a program to go to. Yay!

    Congrats!!!

They have faculty that stretch beyond traditional realism (via genre, experimental form, etc.) as well as a bunch of people who specialize in translation. It's not WAY OUT THERE ("weird" seems less appropriate than "open to experimentation and genre"). That said, the program isn't exactly focused specifically on literary realism in the way many other programs are.  So it is different.

    Ah, thanks for the clarification.

I don't think I'm "weird" enough for them, which is one of the reasons why their row is marked as a "rejection" in my spreadsheet. But I also feel like I might be a little too weird for most others; and there's so much suppressed weirdness looking for an opportunity to exhale. :) As a general rule (and as someone who genuinely struggles with propriety in everyday life), I gravitate towards people/settings/things/etc...that embrace/promote innovation and dynamism and weirdness. But sometimes, when innovation is your spelled out mission, maybe you're gonna push me to be "weirder" than I want to be. And it happens to be so important to me that my writing makes an attempt to connect with the working masses, with whom I'll always try to stand in solidarity, despite the temptations of "The Clouds." In short, wishy-washiness rules.

When I was first researching programs I kept running into the Brown Is Weird rumor? rep? but the faculty doesn't seem all that out there, aesthetically. But that doesn't stop me from imagining a cohort of Judy Funnies running around in berets.

Anyone else check website for Johns Hopkins? I feel like I'm checking wrong...is it the "decision status" link at the bottom of the application page? Mine just says: We write to inform you that a decision has been made....decision letter by mail in next couple of weeks."

This is what I have, too. It's confusing because I do see people who had more straightforward rejections on the results page.

I've reached the point where I think I'll be fine if I get nothing but rejections. This year doesn't make the most sense economically or personally, which I think I knew when I applied. I think writing to my recommendors and being all, "Hey I got rejected from everyone!" is going to suck though.

Still, I've got three schools where I haven't gotten rejected (or just assumed a rejection). Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

It's not even March yet! You are definitely getting ahead of yourself. Fingers crossed for your remaining schools!!

Good point. I might have to tell them not to bother with me if I get to that stage and they want an interview. I don't like engaging in high stakes negotiations in the absence of the delete button. :)

Lol, I feel you. If only life had a backspace key. I legit feel like if I were suddenly forced to detail my literary influences or something I'd end up saying uhh... I like them books, what with the pictures and such.

  12. Nothing naive about it, I think. We're very much in the dark here. Once we've sent off our apps it's almost entirely conjecture on our part what's going on with these programs until we get that acceptance/rejection. No reason not to remain hopeful and optimistic! Is Ole Miss your #1, @Mao III?

I'm feeling stupidly cheerful as I just had a delicious cheeseburger and it's in the low 80s here in LA. Anyway, congrats to that Brown poetry dude/ette from the results page. Such a fierce program!! You go, you! But the idea of having to speak coherently on the phone before being offered admission... oy. I'm sweating just thinking about it.

Oh, no, I meant even moving onto Phase II. I believe they only want the secondary materials if you move on, but I haven't seen any posts on the survey from fiction writers who were contacted in the first place.

Yeah, this is also why I'm thinking I didn't make it past Phase I. We're coming up on March now and it doesn't seem likely to me that they'd still be deliberating for Phase II. Then again, someone mentioned a few pages back that they were still reviewing apps mid-Feb (or so?).

Was this the longest Monday in the history of Mondays or what?! Were there not more entries on the results page on Valentine's Day, which was on a SUNDAY?! This waiting business has made me silly, irritable, restless...I've been responding in all caps to friends sending me routine e-mails: AM I DONE HEARING FROM SCHOOLS? IS THE APOCALYPSE IMPENDING? DID SOMEBODY DIE? WHY ARE YOU SENDING ME THIS USELESS STUFF?!

Just wanted to say LOL to this whole thing.

So I think the first/second week of March is when JHU and Brown notified in the past... I will be getting NOTHING done this time next week.

    Well said! It's so true.

Hey, whatever became of Mississippi Round 2 (fiction) notifications? I'm assuming they already notified.

They had to have, right? I think 2/17 is their deadline for receiving transcripts, app $, etc., from round 2 applicants--or so it says on their site. Or is that outdated info?

Anyway, did y'all see the other UMich result?!

I did!! BUT I am going to remain delusional/skeptical and see what happens tomorrow. For some reason I was expecting Michigan emails to go out on a Friday...

  17. If you look up Michigan on the results someone says they called the office and were told that results are going out at the end of Feb. What am I to believe??

    Still freaking out btw
