Oh I forgot to mention that yes it’s possible to receive both the OGS and an entrance scholarship.
At the advanced standing welcome session, Sharon said OGS would not affect internal awards.
Personally, I’m not sure how accurate that was since the internal awards are really needs based and designed to maximize the number of recipients so that as many students receive some sort of funding. I myself did not get anything from the internal awards and I think the other funding had an impact, which is understandable.

Was the email from Sharon or OGS? I looked back in my emails and Sharon informed me of the nomination in late, late May then I got an email from OGS about  final confirmation of eligibility mid-June with a link for that elgibility form.
From what I recall, the form was fairly basic just confirming your basic information, the program, and the number of sessions.
After the eligibility check, results were sent mid-July. Something to keep in mind is if you want the full amount with UofT, Sharon recommends doing the Special Studies course over the summer.
Fingers crossed & congratulations to you both!!

I'm assuming they have to consider maximum class sizes, as they likely only have a certain number of qualified teachers and want to maintain a certain teacher/student ratio.  Then there's also the consideration of finding everyone a placement ... I would have a worse opinion of being accepted, but told there's no placement spots for me so I would really meet the degree requirements in the expected timeframe.
(The disclaimer is that I'm still waiting to hear from both programs I've applied to.)

    Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who got into their school of choice! I’m looking forward to meeting the U of T students at the Welcome Orientations for Year 1 and Advanced Standing (2 separate events).

For those waitlisted at U of T, please don’t lose hope, but like another poster said be cautiously optimistic to protect yourself. A significant portion of my Year 1 classmates were originally waitlisted and the latest I know of personally was mid-August.
Please, please don’t associate your status with your worth or personal qualifications. My waitlisted classmates were just as successful, if not more, than the non-waitlisted students. This is a difficult process that requires a lot of patience, but hopefully we all make it through.

Hi! I didn't do my program there - I actually applied for fall 2018 (got accepted) but will be attending uoft instead

Apologies from my post earlier: I meant that those who go to Orillia can do their placement in Toronto but its still competitive overall to get a placement there due to the numerous schools who have priority. HOWEVER they said their practicums in Orillia and Thunderbay were phenomenal and helped them get jobs after graduation but also secure spots for MSWs.

My mentor (lets call them X) who went to Orillia actually went said that their cohort this year faced numerous issues in the structure of the program; they said that there were somethings they didn't agree with that the orilia campus especially the way they were taught so they would recommend the thunder bay campus. Although Orilia is small, it requires permission from thunderbay for everything! X said that overall, Lakehead does an amazing job providing accessibility. X said that they definitely learned alot and it challenged them in ways that their previous education didn't. They were very interested in going because of their emphasis on a framework  that was general and did a little bit of everything; from the entrance test you could have assumed that! Orillia also has an emphasis on Indigenous education but Lakehead overall supports it and the rural pop; so you'll get a fresh point of view on many social issues! hey said that they have a floor that is specifically for social work students so they got really close to the cohort and you spend time with them everyday so you bond and get so many chances to meet with them for presentations and other stuff like that. They didn't know about the whole social work floor being on one level for thunderbay but definitely look into it BUT overall since both campuses are small; you get to know your peers very well and quickly you become a family. They said lakehead overall does an awesome job providing a class about interviewing and counselling; professors are amazing. There are professors who have diverse backgrounds in social work education so you can talk to them and they are very approachable especially when asking for their opinions or help; the fact that both thunderbay and orillia have small class sizes really helps. They don't have an emphasis on research ; its super diverse - they are working in mental health so theyre with an organization for their practicum that meets their goals.

I also saw above that you were looking at a program that would provide you with clinical skills- lakeheads doesn't focus on clinical but they equip you well for counselling! usually MSW programs focus on clinical work but no doubt you'll pick it up  If you feel hesitant about lakeheads program, also look into the addictions and mental health program at humber! they combine both AOP and clinical so its a good balance!! but I say go for the HBSW- mentors said that its alot of work especially cause its crammed up in a year but itll open doors to other programs & your profs will guide you every step of the way!!

    I hope that helps

Just wanted to echo that it truly varies.

For UofT, I heard mid-July. I know the chances are probably slim, but I don't think it hurts to try especially on the off-chance that you get it. I really encourage my classmates to apply because I thought my chances were low too.

I know funding isn't mentioned a lot with UofT, but they've actually sent quite a few emails about scholarships, research positions, and job opportunities, so these opportunities do exist.

Yes. The deadline of April 28 applies to ouac and emailing the school of social work to confirm your acceptance. It says to email Sonya, but that may be outdated since Sonya said she no longer works for the department. If you don't respond by the 28th, you forfeit your spot and it will be reallocated by May 1st.
A $200 deposit is due by June 1st. There is also a form to sign about placements, but there's no date on it.

For those waitlisted at U of T, a lot of my close friends in the program got off the wait list my year.  I would say proceed with cautious optimism, it might not happen but it might, and if it does let it be a pleasant surprise. I'm so sorry for those of you that feel discouraged, as I mentioned in a post a while ago I firmly believe that if it's your dream--it'll happen, one way or the other--be proud of your accomplishments in the mean time. The program is *stupid* competitive, not getting in is not a reflection of your abilities or your potential in any way shape or form. I'm positive you will ALL be tremendous Social Workers one day, even if it takes a bit more time. Hang in there and don't forget to be compassionate towards yourself <3 and if you feel you need any extra emotional support, this forum is here for you.

Just posting some clarification here, and sorry for the slow responses- most of the moderation team is currently traveling, and moderating via cell phone isn't the easiest.
We don't screen for veracity of claims. Nor do we penalize people for calling out bad information, or information as suspect.
That said, there's a fine line between calling out information as bad, and calling out a user as a troll. Stick to the information, don't target the user. Similarly, there are lines that have been crossed in the past wherein current bad posts cause past non-objectionable posts to be down voted in multitudes.
I will also mention that we take people posting from multiple accounts very seriously, and is usually results in banning of one account along with suspension of the other account. That said, it is especially difficult to tell when people are positing on multiple accounts- many people here post from universities, and have the same IP address. Basing suspensions and bans on IP address is a really bad thing, as there are several of you here who share an IP address with MSW2MD- banning that IP address would indirectly ban you.
We are honestly doing our best to keep up with this, and we really appreciate how hard all of you are working to ignore and report rather than responding.

I speak in this forum as a member of UofT FIFSW Class of 2017. It's clear that Ye has his opinions and they are unlikely to change. I think this forum would be better served getting back to its original purpose of helping one another as it was used during my application cycle. Yes, applications are in now but that doesn't mean you can't provide encouraging words to one another. My other recommendation would be to ignore Ye and not engage as many have found his posts inflammatory. Obviously you all can make your own decisions but this forum has gotten a bit out of hand.

I'm sorry but this is just rude, 75%+ of U of T MSW's are on OSAP like everyone else. I'm in the program, I'm white, I'm 70k in debt and of the dozens of friends I have in the program I know of 2 whose parents paid their way through, everyone else is either taking student loans or working outside of school to pay for it. Many people are stretched very thin as they can't afford to go to school without working part-time or in some cases even full time. My 2 best friends in the program are members of visible minorities not mentioned by you, the program is definitely predominantly white but we certainly have more than "some chinese and jewish women".
Also, I find you posting in this forum generally unpleasant as you make everyone who is currently in the U of T program uncomfortable after last year when you attended events that were for U of T students only, and then proceeded to add every female in the program on Facebook and creepily message them and comment on their stuff. Honestly, I've been lurking this message-board and holding my tongue but then you started being super harsh about U of T and like no, just stop.

You will receive  a funding package either says 9k or 15k ;  you will get 3k each semester ( The school will deduct them directly from your tuition fees and give you whatever that left after your tuition payment) . 15k funding package includes 6k entrance scholarship in addition to the 9k program funding which everyone gets once they get into the program.
York's tuition is about 6k in total in comparison to u of t's 12k for one year MSW program, but since u of t is an elite oriented school,  high tuition fee should not be a challenging  issue for most students there. Perhaps that is one important reason why this school severely lacks of racial diversity ( except some Chinese and Jewish women).

Longtime lurker here who signed up just to write this.
I feel as though this thread is being derailed by discussions about the validity of various social work approaches, particularly one school and their program. I feel as though there are individuals inferring that those of us who are applying to U of T ( or"McMSW" as one other poster has called it) are uninformed or ignorant consumers of the neoliberal academy. Honestly, and I'm speaking for myself here, I'm just an individual trying to move into the career of my choice. Yes I find it important to reflect on my values and the values of the program, but I'm not here to debate these things. I hope we can all be respectful of everyone's choices. Although I appreciate your passion towards your approach to social work, and your concern that some of us are making the wrong choice, I invite those of you who would like to continue this debate about social work and higher education to please move to another thread. This thread is for applicants to help each other, inform one another, and to receive updates. Personally, these discussions are becoming rather toxic and I would like to continue to see this thread being used as intended.

I just want to connect with other people who are applying to similar programs. We're here to help each other out, not criticize people who choose particular programs. Thanks.

You're making a horrible assumption that individuals choosing to apply to schools with more of a clinical approach do not understand the foundational principles of social work, or that they are not thinking critically about them. You have a very inflexible way of looking at social work; clinical = bad, anti-oppressive = good. One of the basic tenets of social work is to not make quick judgements or assumptions about our clients, or to be inflexible or closed-minded. Obviously, anti-oppressive social work is something you strongly identify with, and that is good that you find value in it and choose to practice it. But to be honest, your comments throughout this thread come across as very condescending and judgemental, and as I mentioned, they are creating a toxic discussion. I actually was afraid to talk about my U of T application because of posts like yours.
Finally, I was always taught that different approaches (anti-oppressive, critical social work, structural, clinical...etc) have value in particular contexts, one is not better compared to the other. It is a matter of personal preference and selecting the approach that you identify with, or that best suits the setting in which you are working. You have stated your preference so I do not see the point of criticizing individuals who are choosing to go into clinical social work.
I want to address your last sentence about how those of us who do not like when "our gender/social/racial privileges are challenged," better attend a clinical program that celebrates our whiteness. Again, you are making SO many assumptions about us. You do not know our cultural/socio-economic/gender backgrounds. You do not know our lived-histories. Thanks.
