Hedy's Folly is also written by Richard Rhodes, an author and historian I really adore. I've loved all of his books, even if they are generally pretty huge. And I do love documentaries. Their my favorite genre of film, actually.  I don't watch as many now that I don't have Netflix, but I still love'em. I've considered getting that Sundance documentary Netflix-like service.
I've dabbled in everything, to be honest. I've spent thousands of hours in MMORPGs, and I've spent hundreds of hours perfecting my craft in Call of Duty. I'll play pretty much anything, assuming it's good. However, I've pretty much sold everything off by my immense Nintendo DS collection (I have around 450) and my Steam games. I only really play games on those platforms anymore, or I would if I had time.

I like biographies and memoirs, especially if they tell a bit of history during the process and especially if they are science, technology or medicine related. Although, any book in that subject area is pretty awesome.  I like fiction too, but fiction that tends to be tangentially related to that subject area. For example, a few months ago I read The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate.
I'm a reader of singular focus. A little boring perhaps, but I like'em.

I love fantasy, and anything with an adventure in it. I grew up on the Famous 5 (like when I was about 5) and then transitioned to Harry Potter (who didn't?). Authors I currently am enjoying are Brent Weeks, Joe Abercrombie, Trudi Canavan, John Gwynne, Anthony Ryan etc. I loved the Farseer series by Robin Hobb, Magician series by Raymond e. Feist etc. I'm also partial to crime stories, adventure (I love love love love anything by Clive Cussler - guilty pleasure), the occasional bonkbuster (hello Jackie Collins) and I do love me some autobiographies as well. Normally sports people but I have to say the one that really sticks with me is Scar Tissue - Anthony Kiedis. Now that my book history is aired to the world, anyone else want to contribute theirs?

I have been in contact with a few professors and they agreed I have a solid background and that will really help me. One professor even told me they really didn't focus on quant scores at his school so hoping for the best! Thank you for your help!

@hippyscientist I just started watching Gilmore Girls for the first time about a month ago....am almost done with Season 1. It's like there was this whole side of American pop culture that I just get now!
Unrelated, I just got an admission decision notification from a school where I withdrew my application. The notification was a standard rejection, and all I could think was "that's a little passive-aggressive, y'all." Also got my assistantship notification today, and am super excited!!! I get to help with a class called "Media & Democracy." Stoked!

Isn't that your job though  If there's one person to be addicted to books, I'm glad it's you!

Also, I just ate an egg sandwich that had been left out for 8+ hours, and the inside was green which I realized after chowing down on about 80% of it... it's been nice knowing you all.

Well it sounds like you have lots of potential options, PhD or not, but if you do end up doing a PhD I'm sure you could find a suitable enough program for your research interests, even if it doesn't end up being in History. I think it's great though if you've found such a well-suited program! Definitely enjoy your time there.

Pardon the brevity of the following suggestions. I'm in a rush.
Start here and there (if you have access to JSTOR or an academic research library).
For nativism, start with Higham's Stranger in the Land and American Jewish History, vol. 76.

The Poisoner's Handbook is in my pile.  In fact, a couple of people were discussing said book at graduation yesterday.
I've experienced the apprehension from others in regards to books by journalists as well, and generally I don't understand them. For example, Deborah Blum is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and the director of the science journalism program at MIT. Am I one to question her credentials? I don't think so. I've found that individuals like her are more the rule than the exception. I've just finished a tiny book titled Young Einstein: And the story of E=mc2, and when I had initially found it, I thought it had to be some cash grab. But the book is reworking of a dissertation, re-sculpted for a popular audience.
I'd love to study the cultural impact of popular-targeted books, but I'm not sure how well-received such a focus would be in a lot of history programs. I'll have to start researching programs so I can make a better-informed decision after I complete my masters in a few years. I wouldn't want to go into an English program, and if I can't find a history program that's an ideal fit, I might look into American studies or information studies programs.
I could actually go straight through a PhD in the program I'm attending in the fall, but I'm not sure how poorly the academic incest issue would affect my career prospects. This program is quite ideal, and I doubt there's many other programs that could match this program's fit.
    Things to think about.

If anyone's  (@rhombusbombus @Danger_Zone)interested in the pinterest boards mine's https://uk.pinterest.com/francescaelizab/. I pin far too much. Also, rhombusbombus, I did think about roommates, and figured I'd live on my own to start, and would move in with someone only if I felt I needed to (like a friend, partner etc). I'm so lucky that my stipend allows me to afford my rent, my current housemate is doing my head in!

I might have to try The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've never read it.  So many books, so little time!
Hm. Besides for the classics? I really loved The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, The Ghost Map, and Ghost Hunters. I also love pretty much everything by Richard Rhodes.
The great thing about history of science-esque books is that there's an entire discipline dedicated to explaining science: science writers. A lot of well-written, for-popular-audiences are actually quite historically accurate. I'm always finding interesting books, and upon finding them I tend to immediately look up the authors (to make sure it isn't some shill cash grab). The vast majority of authors I find are quite educated, vetted, and well-regarded.
I think history of science, technology, and medicine is pretty lucky in that regard.

Okay, so Oklahoma just is in a bit of a tight spot financially, and in response to this tightness, they've just passed legislation to remove the state EITC.
I'm probably in a minority here, but I'm poor, married, with a child. It's absurd, absolutely absurd that politicians think it's okay cut financial incentives from the poor. Did you know the federal EITC sometimes makes up 20% of my yearly income? If the federal one instantly vanished, I would no longer be able feed my family, and it's not even a question of me spending frivolously. I have no car payment, no credit card payments, and I live very frugally.

@hippyscientist. @Cat_Robutt. - My exoskeleton research isn't iron man level awesome, but I think it's pretty cool. I'm working on developing balance recovery assistance control for the exo. Basically, it means I push you and help you not fall down. So much code debugging crammed into 3 days while I had access to the robot. Now I have a gig of data to process, but hopefully it's the last I'll need for my masters thesis!

Aww. The faculty member I graded for this semester sent the chair of the department I'm attending (and me) a glowing letter of appreciation in regards to my effort in his class.
That was awfully nice of him.

Yup! I mean, I'll be okay. I can take out an extra thousand a year in student loans if I have to. I don't want to, but I have the option.

Really rusty with my drawing skills lately. My friend asked me to draw him a picture and after endless attempts I finally gave him the least worst drawing I came up with. I can't tell if I'm just being hard on myself or not, because I don't think my friends are going to tell me "yeah you're right that's an awful drawing." With school I don't often feel motivated to draw. I tried to make art my major and it totally zapped my motivation and made me hate doing art, so I know it's only meant to be a hobby for me, but it still sucks to see your talents slipping because you haven't kept up with it. I just feel like there isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want, so I always have to sacrifice something.

During undergrad, I had one small bedroom for all of my stuff (desk, computer, TV, and of course, my bed) and while attempting to do work I was always tempted to just take a "quick nap" or a "quick break." I spent a lot of time procrastinating because I did not have any dedicated space for school work. I would advice to take the separate room if you can. It may also be beneficial to you to learn to do work with occasional distractions.

@Fallen In my experience/opinion, having done both, I recommend going with the option of setting your office up in your spare room. If you can work with occasional distraction, I think that would be fine. My reasoning: a) it's important for work-life balance to keep your bed and your computer as far from each other as possible - your bedroom should be a place of rest, sanctuary, and fun; having it mentally associated with projects and deadlines is unhealthy.  b) having your computer in another room, in a formal office-space, helps to professionalize your work by disassociating it with other activities - i.e. this is the place I work, here I get get work done, i don't sleep here, I don't eat here, I don't surf the internet here, I work here. YMMV.

I personally like to separate my work from my personal life as much as possible spatially as it helps me keep them separate in my head.

    Dear all,
I must admit that I was a bit annoyed when I initially read responses in this thread. This was because I was hoping you'd all just say, "long is fine as long as it is good."
Fortunately for me, you all did not let me proceed in my folly. You guys really saved my goose. Judging by the consensus on this forum, I think I would have been royally screwed if I had submitted what I had planned to submit.
Anyways, it took me two days--at least 7 hours on each day--to get the essay down to the page limit. And I really hate to admit it, but it's a much better piece now.
    So, thank you.
P.S. Thank you also for the specific recommendation about copying and pasting into a new document. I actually did that three times. So, it took me three passes to get it down. But, the process allowed me tighten the argument and improve the flow. I'm REALLY pleased with the end result. Thank you!!
    Yours,
    Contrite.

I'm gonna be working on turning my dissertation into a book. Not necessarily doing new research, but going back over some of the old documents that I read back at the beginning of my research for this project (three years ago now -- good grief!) that I want to reconsider and possibly put different weight on and interpret differently now, with the perspective of the completed project. But, more or less, I'm trying to get enough of the book together to be able to send out the proposal to a press by the end of the summer.
