Having a hard time looking for this thread.
I just want to say Thanks to my PI, my hubby and my best friend for all the support that they gave me! I was at a very low place in Jan-Feb, then I hurt my arm in Feb doing kickboxing. OVERALL low due to not getting into school and doubting my abilities and feeling old...
Early April, my PI offered me a spot in his new research group. I missed the deadline to apply for Grad school in the school for Fall 2019. But he assured me he could get me in for Spring 2020. What would I do in those 6 months? Then he recommended me to discuss that option with his coworker/ friend. And he was able to convince my PI to pull me into the program for Fall 2019 instead.
I am beyond happy and surprised. I applied late to the program (like the end of March) and got an offer letter a week later. Really thanks to my PI who are being very helpful to me. And my husband and best friend who were there for me. HERE I AM BME PHD! I am ready!

Hey there! I've also been searching for places to stay! I first used Craigslist and found that there weren't many choices! I then went on the UConn Off-Campus Housing listing. You just need to sign in with your NetID (Which should be given to you when you were accepted) Just follow a list of steps to get your NETID then you should be able to login into Off-Campus Housing LIsting. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to get my other ID (I think is the email) where it's needed to login into On-Campus Housing Listing. However, I found a few good and affordable room prices around UConn Storrs from the Off-Campus listing~!

    Good luck!

Thank you! I have been asking my other friends who are in similar PhD program, they all have been using Illustrator and told me they used "basic shapes" LOL.... YES basic shapes.... I will start on learning how to use Illustrator and have my friends show me how! I can already see my learning curve is so high! But I will work on it!  I don't want to ask my PI about it (I should) but I feel like it is something I should have known before even getting into PHD program ya know?!
    Thanks everyone for the reply!

I just got my funding letter from them today and I accepted my offer from them in March. You could contact the department and see when you might receive the letter. You will more than likely not pay tuition. You get a tuition waiver when you get a graduate assistantship. The only thing you will have to pay is student fees and health care, but since the grad students at UConn have a union, things are cheaper for grad students than most other schools. So, the fees would be about $600 per semester, I think, and the healthcare will be about $400 per school year, I remember correctly. It's not too bad and you can have the school automatically take that out of your stipend before you receive the money.
I think it should be fine. I know it may be hard to trust his word, but I feel grad school will require us to do a lot of trusting. You could always email your PI about the funding letter as well.
Good luck and I can't believe we will be in the same cohort! So excited! Go Huskies!

Hi! I know a lot of people who use Adobe Illustrator to make figures for publications, but unless you have access to this for free through your university or you can get a copy through your advisor you probably don't want to pay for Illustrator.
A lot of people in my program, including myself, use Inkscape to create figures for publication since it is basically a program very similar to Illustrator but free. When I was first playing around in Inkscape I found a good series of Youtube videos on how to use Inkscape for creating scientific figures. These tutorials may not be as helpful for creating drawings like the example you provide above, but I thought I would share the link below.

Aww, thanks! I have had two phone interviews with UConn professors and one skype interview with a UW Seattle professor. I was just recently accepted to and invited to an Open House at Boston University. I am very happy about that at least!
I hope your applications are going well! I am sorry to hear about MIT, though :(.

I've got a job offer at Google – as a bonus, my boyfriend also works at Google and we could live together instead of doing long distance while I get my masters. So I've got a pretty sweet fallback if I get rejected from my dream school! ?

I got into UC Riverside! I applied as a safety but I genuinely love the research and I'm so thrilled. I'm going to grad school! I feel so much less anxious now about other schools.

Had my first ever Skype interview today, and I think I did super well. The professor said my letters of rec were amazing, which was super comforting. Gives me hope for all of the places giving me the silent treatment right now ?

Yeah, if I don't hear anything positive by the end of the week, I've decided it's time to start applying to jobs.
If anyone has advice for post bacc programs... let me know. I'm going to apply to the NIH IRTA but I'm not eligible for all the schools that have PREP post baccs because I grew up low-income but not technically in poverty. And first-generation and queer students aren't underrepresented I guess? (I'm a little salty lol I feel like I should be eligible)
