Rorororosy got a reaction from AlwaysaFalcon in What do you wish you knew when starting grad school? Grad school advice!
I just posted a blog on ten things you need for graduate school.
Things I wish I knew, You'll probably cry and its fine, its nothing to be ashamed of, you need to find at least one good friend, and when I mean good friend, like someone you can trust. It will make the difference, that you should put some efforts into building relationships with both your classmates and your supervisors. I wish I knew that, it was going to feel bad to not know anything but that feeling of being uncomfortable was just temporary. I wish that I followed my gut more, and wasn't so worried about what I was doing wrong or right and really just tried to connect with my clients that first semester. I wish I knew that there are SO MANY resources online. I underutilized my resources. I wish I had started working out my first semester and not just completely abandon my life! Also, that making lists and using priority lists for that matter was going to save me, you can't get everything done, its almost impossible.

I think building relationships with the schools you are most interested in, maybe volunteer in a lab. There are always ways, if you want it you can do it!

I agree with all of these. You need a pair of good dress pants, some flats and just regular clothes. You just need to look nice for clinic but you dont need to break the bank, marshalls, TJ maxx are great places to shop!

I am doing a 20 hour assistantship, which covers almost all of my tuition and gives me a stipend of 24k a year. It also allotted me in state tuition for Maryland.

I was going to apply to all Florida schools come January if I didn't get into UCF's  Spring 2018 program, but, luckily, I did. Whew. First time applying, and it was so stressful!  The process is so draining.
For those of you who are bilingual, emphasize this repeatedly throughout your application. The field is desperate for bilingual therapists -- you have to let the programs know that you are a valuable asset for the field because of this. Know your worth.

I wouldn't spend the money. I used my 2009 MacBook and eventually my iPad which was faster. But if your mac is in good condition I don't see why to upgrade.

This was my second time applying and I got in, I had a horrible undergrad GPA. I did a post bacc and got good scores on my GRE, the most important thing I did was research within the department for a year. You have to get to know people and have them write you letters. I felt like that is what would set you apart. My letters and your personal statement, also attending open houses and getting involved if you have the time.
    Good luck

I just checked out Master Clinician. I actually don't think I've heard of it till now. What is on the site and is it worth paying for the subscription/membership?

MY husband is a neurology resident and he works crazy hours. Sometimes he comes home and eats and passes out, but we try to do date night at least once a week and sometimes its ends up being every other week. But we text and communicate and laugh and sometimes I just read beside him while he's asleep. I think if you both talk and outline your goals and have realistic expectations of each other then it will work out and you'll appreciate the little time you do have together. You also have to be willing to put in the work-getting up early to see them before work even though your exhausted, or going out after working a long shift just because you haven't seen each other all week.
Sounds like you're already willing to do the work by coming on here and asking for advice, best of luck to you both.

I would say that after applying twice, the mistake I made on the first one was not listing my professional goals enough and what I Had to offer the schools. It was more of a fluff story, which is great but I think it needed to be more professional.
That was my downfall. Speech Student300 had a great response and outline you could follow.

I think its $20 or 25 for a year. Basically, it's a bunch of therapy sessions video recorded. Mainly pediatrics focused. Some schools (like my undergrad) have students watch videos on it, and then comment, so you have a lot of input from other students RE the session in the comments spot for each video. Usually the clinicians talk about their sessions and tactics in the end of the video. I found it to be helpful!

I was thinking (in all my potential free time post-grad...)
    1. Learning some Spanish
    2. Refreshing anatomy and phonetics and diagnostics material
    3. Watching more clips on MasterClinican
    4. Potentially (long stretch here, though) volunteering again at the pediatric clinic or hospital I was at before
    5. Maybe reading some cool TBI/brain books
    6. Buying some therapy materials at Lakeshore when coupons are out (I work w kiddos, so double purpose)

I am not sure if we need to do any reading this summer, but if you are motivated, I am reading The Brain That Changes Itself and highly recommend it! It is about neuroplasticity, a fundamental concept behind rehabilitation and development. I did not mean to read something related to my career, but am finding it very relevant.

Hi everyone! I have decided to attend UT Dallas in the Fall and I am looking for a roommate in the area. I don't mind if you are from another SLP program since there are a few in the area. I am looking to live near Uptown or Oak Lawn, but I am willing to compromise. I am moving from Florida so I do not know the area well. I will have a cat with me, so being pet friendly is a must. Just send me a personal message if you are looking for a roommate in the area and I will tell you a little bit about myself. Thanks!
