I got the award! I'm speechless. I haven't looked at the reviews, nothing in the world matters! lol

That's how I feel too! I got it, and it took me hours to look at the reviews. OMG OMG OMG

    I can hardly breathe.

  2. Wow, I've really appreciated reading this thread too. I'm the first person in my extended family to attend college, and now I'm getting my Ph.D. Aside from the obvious hardships (my parents not knowing how to help me apply to and navigate college, so I ended up going to a local, lower-tier school for undergrad, and having to work 3 jobs while competing in athletics in order to pay for it all), they now are not supportive of my graduate school pursuit. They felt that the whole point of my BS was to make money, so when I told my mom I got into my Ph.D. program, her only response was, "how much is that going to cost?" Considering that she's never had to help pay for any of my schooling, I thought she might just congratulate me.

Then there is the added stress of having to spend so much time doing homework. Even when I'm home for the holidays, I spend much of my time working on papers. They've never had a job where they took work home, so they just completely do not understand it and I feel like a jerk for spending any of that time on my schoolwork. Family members don't ask how school is going; they ask when I'm going to find a husband and when I'm going to move back to my home state.

I also feel like a major imposter. I look at some of my peers and think I'll never catch up to where they are in terms of familiarity with the field and academia more broadly. I keep working, but it does sometimes feel like starting a race a mile behind some of your peers.

Are there any kind of stats posted anywhere about the people who are usually awarded the GRFP?

What kind of stats are you looking for?

@vulpix your insight has been great.  Do you have a general sense of what the alumni/recent grads end up doing/going career wise? Is it hard to leverage the Harvard EdM outside of the education sector? Does anyone do consulting?

Which program? I've worked with a few HGSE grads, serving as admin for schools or charter networks. Some have degrees in teaching and learning, and others in policy.

  5. Hi all, what are your thoughts on participation in graduate student associations? I can think of some obvious benefits: getting to be on the team advancing causes, building professional contacts, etc. I think it might be fun. But before I apply, I also want to weigh the costs/benefits.

I'm curious if this is something that would even be worth noting on a CV. Have those of you who participated found it to be very time-consuming? (I'm sure this varies by position).

  6. Is there a chance you can still collaborate with the indigenous teacher if you stay at your current school? I believe your instincts are important--there is a long history of researchers reinforcing dynamics of oppression when the research is not guided by indigenous peoples themselves. I am glad you're giving this such careful thought.

  7. Tuition is often waived for PhDs, but certainly not always. I tried to negotiate my scholarship for my master's program (had some leverage with offers from competitor schools), but was unsuccessful. For my PhD program, there is no negotiation on stipend--everyone gets the same amount.

Question: Is it a bad sign if you get paired up with a mentor you did not mention in your SOP? Like did the professors I mentioned not want me? lol

Also, once I submit my intent to register, should I reach out to my assigned advisor and introduce myself?

In my department, it doesn't seem to be a bad sign. Sometimes professors are thinking of retiring soon, and don't want to take on new students; others may be going on sabbatical, or may simply not have the grants/funds to accept a new student. Of course it could also simply be due to how they perceive you'll fit based on your SOP.

Could anybody explain the connection between TC and Columbia University? Are TC students still considered as Columbia grads?

TC is Columbia University's graduate school of education. We are considered Columbia grads; my degree says Columbia University on it, but is also signed by the president of TC. They are a little further removed than other GSEs seem to be from their universities--they have no access to Columbia's endowments, as well as, I think, a separate board and president. But this seems to be how Columbia structures most of its graduate schools.

  10. I was waitlisted last year for my top-choice PhD program. Advice I was given was to continue to speak with my POI, and to communicate that I would definitely accept if admitted off the waitlist. Of course, this is only something you should say if you mean it, but I did, and I was admitted off the waitlist. I expressed how much I had enjoyed the interview and ways in which the school was such a great fit for me.

I also appreciated this thread while I was waiting: http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/19953-getting-off-the-waitlist/

So, I realised I made a silly mistake. I wrote the name of one of the professors I would love to work with wrong, after writing it right in a previous sentence. My word processor corrected it endless times, so this was a mistake it went. Do you think that's a straight rejection?

FWIW, I wrote the wrong name of the program I was applying to (in one sentence), and still got admitted :)

Wondering what everyone's amount of work experience is that are applying to MA programs. I graduated in 2015, so by the time I would enter an MA program in 2017, that will have been 2 years of work experience. Do you guys think that's too little?

I was admitted to the T&L program at HGSE with 2.5 years' work experience (in 2013).

  13. I'm bumping this up to see if there are any best practices for sente that you all would like to share. I've read the user manual, but would still love to hear from those of you who use it regularly--what are your favorite organization techniques?
