I brought my mom to one open house that I attended and went to another alone. Both times there was about a 50/50 split of students who brought their parents and those who did not. Nobody thought it was weird to bring parents!

hi-- sadly, there isnt any magical formula on where to apply to. best bet is to go through ASHAedfind and look at LOTS of schools and find those with stats that are comparable to yours (if not lower).  also- there arent even any 'safety' schools anymore- its just way too competitive.  The GPA is a bit of an issue too- congrats though as most college students would LOVE to have that high of a GPA, just in our field, its right on the edge of first-admit and wait list for most schools. Great job on the GRE too.  you can find more advice and tips on a competitive application on my website-- www.slpgradschool.com

You'd probably be better off doing your own research by looking at stats on ASHA's website edfind.  You can look at each school's past accepted students.  Asking on here will not give you a full list of schools that might accept you.  So many people tend to just google for a quick answer, and that doesn't really help you get in anywhere.  Good luck!

Not gonna lie... I'm surprised you got into all of those programs with those stats (good but not outstanding). Gives the rest of us hope.

K8eCastle got a reaction from SeaCai in I am a first year graduate student. Ask me anything!
In terms of good surprises, I was surprised at how much I was able to recall from my undergraduate classes. I had prepared myself to have to look up a ton of things, but for the most part I was able to be pretty independent when it came to determining goals and treatment plans.
I don’t know that I had any “bad” surprises, but I did find it interesting to see the different attitudes toward speech pathologists that are out there. Last semester I traveled to several preschools in the area conducting speech and hearing screenings. Some of the teachers were very nice and thankful for us, but I came across a handful that clearly thought we were an inconvenience. I was surprised because you’d think that a teacher of all people would be happy to have their students screened for delays, but according to my supervisor that isn’t uncommon.

I literally just made an account moments ago just to tell you that this would be incredibly weird. Do not bring your mother. Nobody else will have parents (or friends) there. You are an adult and this will make you seem like an immature child. I don't know of any program/circumstance in which it would be normal to bring a parent.

    Hello,
For those considering Samford University, I advise you with caution. The program is in crisis and there are a lot of concerns with the development of the program. I understand the stress of getting into an SLP program, I have been there and the struggle is REAL! Therefore, I know a class with be guaranteed for next semester. I do want to warn you. The program has recently lost 6 students in two semesters. They started with 23 and now only have 17. When you arrive for your interview they will inform you that they want you and they care about you. They will also sell you a line about how they want to keep their jobs and that is based on your success, unfortunately being successful in this program is difficult. I also want to remind you that per ASHA website there must be an 80% pass rate for students,17/23 (73%). Here are the reasons why I caution those who are considering this program. "God, Family, School" they will tell you is the most important aspect of the program.
They will not help you.  If you have a question about a project, expect them to tell you that you are in grad school now and that is your decision. Or, they'll change the subject the day of and still expect it due.  The rubric is not clear and that leads to confusion Unfortunately, they told me in the interview that they have an open door policy. They do not have an open door policy.  Disorganized They have different professors grading your assignments and even when you write down what the professor said, word for word, it is wrong.  No clear answers from the professors Grades are not submitted  The tests are not based on notes. You will be literally given a test and have no idea what you are going to be tested on. It is a surprise.  Treat you like children You may be 21+ but be expected to be treated like a child Bad clinical placement They expect you to find your own clinic placement without any assistance. They do have a new DCE and he has been slightly helpful.  They also do not tell you that if you want to work at the VA you are not able to do so because they are not an established program SLP/SLP preceptors/SLP schools in Alabama know about Samford and their failures. I have a friend that is an SLP and spoke about how she knows several preceptors (mentors) that complain about the program and refuse to take Samford students.  They are having difficulty with making contracts with schools. I have one classmate that has to drive an hour away from the home. Another classmate was placed two hours away from her home. She had to call a nearby school to get that situated. They were helpful when pushed to actually change her clinical placement, but she still had to go out of her way to change the situation.  There is also difficulty in obtaining hours.  Do not listen to your concerns. When you complain about a professor or discuss issues they will 'pretend' like they care.  Also, for the teacher reviews at the end of the semester, they close it early so you can't review them.  I had one classmate that spoke to her supervisor, head of the program, head of the department, and the dean of the program. Could you believe that nothing came from it?  This school should be the last choice for you. Please ask me questions, I want to answer them and help you out. I do not want you to go to this program. I wish that you will go to any other school except this one. They care more about their new audiology program than the fact that they managed to lose 6 graduate students in two semesters.

    Hi everyone!
I am currently a 1st year (second semester) graduate student. I know I had SO many questions when I was applying for graduate school, so I want to offer myself as a resource. Here are some topics I had questions about before I started my program:
Paperwork, classes, supervision, activities, internships, placements...
Feel free to ask away and I will try to answer what I know!

I can’t speak for the other schools, but Oklahoma State was very good about communication. They notified me when I was chosen for an interview and then three days after the interview emailed me to let me know that I was waitlisted. I requested to be removed from the waitlist and then sometime in April they emailed me to let me know that all spots had been filled. I was very impressed with the way they kept everyone in the loop! One of the other schools I applied to only gave me a 4 sentence email to let me know that I hadn’t been accepted.

As far as classroom materials go, I would do what works best for you. Don't worry about what your classmates are doing. My professors all recommend taking notes by hand instead of on a computer, but there are still a few who do. Personally I have a binder where I keep powerpoints/outlines, my notes, and assignments. I use a backpack because I have so many things to carry every day that a messenger bag would kill my shoulders.

Echoing what someone else said about Arizona and Texas. I'd look into some smaller schools in states that aren't as "popular." Large schools like Arizona State or UT will get more applicants because of the location and the name recognition. Definitely try to get your GRE up but if you can't there are a few schools that don't require the GRE.

This is so true! When I was given a position as an undergraduate clinician this year I was terrified and felt like I wasn't prepared, but after the first meeting with my supervisor and my first session I felt so much better! Another thing to remember is that nobody expects you to be perfect. You are still learning and your supervisors know that! They are there to help you and teach you, not judge you for making a mistake
