I'm out, y'all. I am done playing this waiting game with schools. I plan on attending UConn this fall! Good luck everyone!

BU sends out their acceptances in waves over about a month.

@dontor They do like three visit weekends! You should get another email with more details on which weekend you've been assigned. Congrats!

laveritecestla got a reaction from extramaniac in Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering Applicant Profiles for 2019 Admission
@extramaniac It's hard to say anything more specific than stellar grades from R1 institutions. Many of the people in my Ph.D. cohort were rejected from Stanford, so I'm guessing research fit is also a big part of it. I spent the summer before applying at Stanford working in Bioengineering and met with the chair of the admissions committee and was still rejected (probably because of my GPA), so who you know definitely isn't all of it.

Seconding that having extensive research background is more important than having a background in your specific field. What I said I wanted to do when I applied last year didn't really relate to what my background was in, and I did fine! I also don't think that taking a gap year looks bad - usually, people come off as "more mature" and sure of what they want. And you're GPA will definitely offset the GRE scores.

laveritecestla got a reaction from MagicMan in GEM Fellowship 2018
I looked up the admin associated with graduate fellowships at MIT and emailed him. He reached out to my department to see if they would agree to the GEM terms, and they said yes, so he offered me the contract through the GEM system. Not totally sure if he's the GEM rep listed on the GEM website, but it is definitely something that falls under his responsibilities.

Seconding reaching out to your university. I did on a whim this morning and had confirmation that I'd be an Associate Fellow within the hour.

I'm stress eating now. My body can't handle this. I just ate some Kentucky Fried Chicken, and now I'm craving a sundae from Dairy Queen.

@krd_BME I'll be declining BU's offer on Monday. Hopefully you're next on the waitlist!

laveritecestla reacted to Elephas in GEM Fellowship 2018
I emailed a GEM school rep recently and they said they'd be willing to support me but can't do anything in the system until I officially commit and indicate that in the portal, however another school just changed my status without me selecting them as the institution I will be attending so I think emailing the specific school(s) of interest is always a good idea so they have a heads up that you may be submitting for them in the upcoming weeks.

laveritecestla got a reaction from H1ppocampus in MIT Media Lab Fall 2018
I'm actually the one acceptance and the one interview on the results thread - I was originally contacted by Conformable Decoders (2nd) choice, interviewed, was accepted, found out that I got an interview for the MEMP program, and figured it couldn't hurt to reach out to Biomechatronics (1st) since Herr is known for preferring to take HST students for funding reasons. I would definitely say not to worry yet, even while interviewing with Conformable Decoders they recognized that they were very much ahead of the usual timeline.
