This. BUT I would not rule it out as a possibility.

With all of the computer science types taking jobs in California, you would have to be open to living in a different state if things do not work out. And I do not think it will be any easier to get than a TT job at a LAC. You would probably have to take a job that you are overqualified for (if your qualifications don't scare people off) then move your way up. Think tanks that require quant skills is an easier option. That said, people do get hired at Facebook and such (look at Stanford placement).
No one here knows the answer. Get your training and keep your fingers crossed that you get a job.

Today I decided for OSU. I hope this means somebody can get good news from the other programs that accepted me.
Still have to hear definitively from Notre Dame, but to assume rejection at this point is better.

Americans have been doing field work for a very long time. Most comparativists do field work. It has nothing to do with wanting a job in the region/country they study.

Not everyone has good advisors or parents who are aware of life in academia in general. If I didn't have good advisors, I wouldn't have the same knowledge I have about it. For 1st generation college students, the info can be lacking.

I can tell you that a lot of the numbers floating around here are borderline ridiculous. No DGS at any school can control the number of students that ACCEPT offers. The only number that is in their control (after dealing with the grad school and possibly others) are the number of offers ISSUED.

    Waitlisted at Notre Dame!
Per email from DGS, ND sent out 15 offers of admission (200~ applications received), and the waitlist contains about 15 people (based on previous cycles, they believe 5 or so will be admitted from waitlist)... and as a point of reference, I was not interviewed at all.
Exciting, but confusing... more waiting I suppose.
(Sorry if this info has already been shared earlier in thread)

Keep one thing in mind: the number of applicants is growing every year and it is harder and harder to get admission. At my department, just over the past 2 years we've had a 50% increase in the number of applicants. Admission is not just about how good you are. It is also about how good are the other candidates.

These Chicago masters programs are cash-cows, as you seem to realize. In my opinion, it'd be a much better plan to spend a year or two in your PhD program (say, until you get your masters there) and then apply again and try to get into a better program. Then, you have some grad experience under your belt but no debt. This is not a terribly uncommon path, and I know several people who've done it. I also know someone who went to one of these Chicago programs and ended up at a school ranked in the 40s, so in my opinion, it's not clear that the debt is worth it, by any means.

Notice the bold....please don't do this throughout your application, it won't be received well.

It depends on how much of a risk taker you are. People with MA's do get rejected from PhD programs. I, personally, would take the Cornell offer.

Yeah, I did. Best offer and best fit arguably, and the stipend suffices for everything I will need, so who am I to wait or to complain. Also closure.

I'm still waiting on three results. If my predictions hold true (Rejections: MSU & Georgetown, Acceptance: CUNY) then I'll have a "simple" choice with just two options. With that said, I'm entirely ready for the waiting to end and the decision making to begin.
Congrats to those who got Harvard today and condolences to those who didn't, hopefully we all have something good to look forward to in the results we do have.

I'm going to count Harvard as a rejection. That concludes my cycle. An acceptance to any program means you've had a good cycle. Worst case scenario would have been straight rejections and that did not happen to me. Very thankful.

@nate3869, I would love to claim one of the Harvard acceptances, but they would need to send me one first  Until it's been confirmed here, I'm sticking with the trolly-troll hypothesis.
