How can you be nominated for Vanier and not even be waitlisted for a SSHRC doctoral award?!

I'm going crazy waiting to hear. My mail delivery will probably end up being delayed considering all the roads around my house are closed due to flooding.

Just heard back from the awards officer (uOttawa) - I got it! (Still have to wait until I get that official letter before I celebrate but hey - that's something!).

I got a replied back. She specified that i got the JOSEPH-ARMAND BOMBARDIER! For those one the waitlist, I will be declining the scholarship because I got the Vanier. Hope this can help!

They know. The awards person at my school just sent me an email saying I got the scholarship.

Final Friday in April, just like last year. Anyone else away from home for an extended period? I won't see my mailbox again until mid-August, likely have to write to my FGS research office to voluntarily seek out my rejection, lol.
 I hope they put these past 4 months to good use!!

They're similar although the SSHRC doctoral awards start with a whole blurb about how they've completed the assessment of your application and they are pleased to tell you that you were successful (and get funding). 

@CrazyPugLady you are absolutely right, and yes, I have started working on my application! (I have three applications for scholarships on top of my Ph.D. application so it's better that I start early).

I mean, it's not too early to start. You can look at the previous year's guidelines and start drafting your research proposal and leadership statement. Trust me. The more time you spend refining it, the better. Do not be like other people who start at the very last minute. You're going to want all the time and help you can get (people to proofread and edit your proposal)! I started two months in advance -- the result was that my proposal was "good" as I think research potential counts for the proposal (I scored 6.75) ... you will be less stressed out and you will have a foundation from which you can craft your SSHRC and provincial funding agency applications!!!
Anyway, good luck to the people applying this period. I am still waiting on my SSHRC Doctoral. If I don't get that I have to convince my department to nominate me again (which I've never done before, lol) and then go from there.

Don't know if it's totally the same, but my Vanier letter starts like this:

I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected as one of the recipients of the 2017-2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Not sure about institutions, but SSHRC usually tweets when the results are mailed. Last year, that was on Wednesday, April 26th (at precisely 2:10 PM, haha) - so might be today or tomorrow.

I noted it above. You don't know if in the next years you will win Vanier anyway. Or if you will win SSHRC Doctoral again. When you're in your upper-years, I believe evaluations are more critical in terms of what you have accomplished academically and otherwise. There is no guarantee you will win Vanier in the next year or even score higher the other years. In previous Vanier threads here, people have scored lower in some parts of their application than in previous years!

I don't think you should decline a SSHRC CGS-D for a Vanier at all!
