hopefulslp1 got a reaction from laekkauai in Backing out from a school to attend another school
So...as I assumed, the one school that I had been waiting to hear from since December finally contacted me today letting me know that I was accepted into their program! They didn't give me any sort of decision before the 15th (not even a waitlist) and told me I would know asap. So because the 15th came I accepted at another program that I was lucky to get into so I would have somewhere to attend. But the school that accepted me today is my number 1 school and has been my dream school ever since wanting to apply for grad schools.
I had a feeling that I would be backing out of a school to attend one of my waitlist schools, but now that the actual time has come I feel super bad about doing so. I know that many people must do this but I didn't realize how crappy I would feel about it. Also, I know a post has been made about this already, but has anyone done this or knows someone who has done it? I'm just trying to find a way to word my email to the program director without sounding rude/unappreciative. My parents say I should just be honest and let them know how I haven't heard from this school throughout the entire cycle and just found out from them today.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, please no negative posts about how this could possibly affect my future or "black list" me because I know it won't. I'm more concerned about how to word the email in the kindest way possible.

I'd say chemistry! I took an online chemistry course from a local community college and it was very doable and easy! (This coming from a girl who almost failed chem in high school)

I also received an offer of admission from the waitlist and turned it down. Hopefully it's given to one of you all!

I've been waitlisted at 8 schools and finally got off one this past Friday. It's definitely anxious because I'm waitlisted at my second school and technically still haven't heard anything from my number 1 (they say my application is still being considered but won't tell me if I'm even waitlisted). I'm constantly checking my email and this darn website. I hope that we can hear some news within the week following the 15th. Hopefully the schools will be diligent in going through their waitlists and won't make us last any longer.

I went through a very similar situation that you are currently going through. I decided last year not to apply due to a low gpa and just felt like I didn't have a chance. Meanwhile all my friends were getting accepted into top programs (my roommate was accepted to all her schools). Whenever friends in class would start talking about graduate school I would usually tune them out and focus on my work or just go along with the conversation. I know it's hard because the jealousy definitely does creep up and sometimes I was fighting back tears because I wished so badly I was in their position. You just need to remind yourself to be happy for them and -most importantly- tell yourself that things will work out for you in the end. I know it seems like it totally won't right now but trust me they will. I'm a huge believer in the fact that everything happens for a reason and I constantly reminded myself of that last year. I also made sure to spend time with other friends who weren't in my major because they always took my mind off of grad school and kind of help take that edge off. And just like the person above me said, if people are asking you about it, just politely tell them that you'd rather not talk about that right now and when you have an update you'll let them know.

hopefulslp1 got a reaction from 20SLP20 in Accept offer from school, but then withdrawing and accepting another school's offer (after getting off wait-list). Opinions?
To be honest, this was going to be my plan as well. I'm currently accepted at one school and waitlisted at 6 others (2 being from my top 3 choices). All the schools I'm waitlisted at are closer to home and less expensive. I don't think it's unprofessional to do so because this is your career that you're talking about. By accepting, you'll at least have that satisfaction of knowing that you'll be attending a program somewhere, in case the waitlists don't work out. I'm sure there are many people who have been in these situations and have withdrawn from a program, that's why there are waitlists!
If there is a deposit, just put into perspective how much money you would be saving by attending the cheaper option. Losing ~$500 by withdrawing would be a lot cheaper then spending thousands of more $$$ in tuition.

Another queen of waitlists here, currently on 6! (was on 7 but took my name off of one) I'm hoping to hear some good news from one of them before April 15 as all of these schools I'm waitlisted at are closer to me than the one school I've been accepted at so far. Also still have not heard from my number 1 pick so I'm hoping for some good news before the 15th!

I'm doing the same! Or i'm talking about their clinic and what they do there that interests me. I attended UIUC for my undergraduate degree and if you go to the faculty page and click on the associate professors there it will take you to their "website" and most talk about the research they are doing!

hopefulslp1 got a reaction from futureSLPhopefullylol in How to send LOR reminder to professor
Anyone have any tips on how to send a reminder email to a professor about a LOR? or has sent one? I sent her my materials and an email around the end of October and she's the only one I'm waiting on. I told her the "due date" was December 15 but expected her to have it done around Thansgiving. I don't want to sound rude in my email but I'm getting concerned she might've forgotten... Any tips or a template would be super helpful! I'm terrible when it comes to asking/reminding people on stuff like this

I did! I was put in touch with the principal of the school and we had a little meeting beforehand and then she introduced me to the slp. I would contact either the principal or assistant principal of the school!

I hope you have a shot because my stats are similar to yours, maybe slightly lower. I think you do! I know it gets scary on here seeing everyone with 3.8+ gpa's, amazing gre scores, and tons of extracurriculars but you can't let that stop you! I used to be super negative about not getting in and did not think I had a shot but I'm going to try my hardest to get into a program! I think if you're determined and apply smart you can get in! We both can get in!!

hopefulslp1 got a reaction from BurritoConnoisseur in Is taking a break before applying to grad school a good idea?
I'm currently about to start my gap year now. I was in the same boat as you essentially and was actually in the process of applying but had to make the decision to do a gap year after one professor wouldn't get back to any of my emails about a recommendation (fingers crossed that doesn't happen this year). But I know what you mean, I felt very unprepared compared to my friends and in my opinion the stress wasn't worth it. I was also trying to work really hard my senior year to raise my gpa and the stress of applications would not have helped me.
But I agree with what everyone else has said, make sure you are going to do something meaningful with that year off (more so 6 months bc you only really have the summer before you're going to have to start apps). I'm starting in 2 weeks as a special education assistant at an elementary school and might try and get a job as an aba therapist a little later on in the year.
While not having the stress of not applying will be nice, fair warning that it does suck to see all your friends get accepted into places and that they will be starting school in September while you'll be stuck at home (but that is also just me). My advice is to try and think really hard about it and weigh the pros and cons, discuss with parents, teachers, etc. Whatever you do make sure that it's what you want to do and what you think is best for yourself! Good luck!!

Thanks! And not terribly close because I went to a large university and my graduating shs cohort had around 100 students in it. I'm mostly just sending these emails now so that I can try and get confirmations from them before the current seniors start asking them in the fall. But I have some drafts typed up so hopefully those will work!

I'm in the same boat as you so this thread is great. What I plan on doing is finding an ABA job, I've found a good amount on the website indeed.com. I also plan on becoming a paraprofessional and working at an elementary school or wherever I can get a job tbh. I know in my state it's pretty easy to get your para license. All you have to do is have either your high school or 2-year degree and just need to pass a background check and pay the $100 for the license. It doesn't pay much but it's experience, just like the ABA. I also plan on retaking the GRE and shadowing as much as I can.
