This might be a moot point since I'm still waiting for Boston College's financial aid info to come through, but Boston's cost of living is freaking me out a little. The studio apartments seem crazy expensive (from a CT standpoint) and having roommates only knocks it down about 200 bucks or so.  Plus, I'm bringing a dog, so I don't even know if roommates would be feasible in that situation.

I was literally going for a jog and had almost given up on my dream school. Ironically it was a really sunny and beautiful day, so I decided just relax and forget about applications for a minute while going for my run. I'd just been told by my close second that I would probably get an offer that week so I didn't really care. The first song that came on was "Don't Look Back" by Boston, which I thought was kind of ironic but shrugged off. Two days earlier I had turned off Gmail push notifications because every time one came through for something dumb I got angry it wasn't admissions so I didn't really look at my phone. Before leaving for class I decided to refresh my email, and there was my flawless offer letter from my dream school. I ran around my house screaming and then tried to show restraint by waiting 27 hours to officially accept the offer.

I checked my portal last night at 8:45 pm and had been accepted to UT Austin! An email came through around 10:30pm telling me to check my portal. And then another official one from the Director of Admissions this morning! My application was marked complete on January 4th and in review with the Graduate committee since January 18th. They gave me until March 9th to decide! Good luck everyone!

Thanks! Of course, this happened AFTER I sent in my deposit for UConn. What I'm really waiting for is the financial aid package for BC. That will really tell me whether or not I'm going there, so I'm still keeping my option for UConn open.
    Hopefully, you'll hear soon!

I'm in the same boat.  I have 10 days to let UConn know my decision and send in my deposit, yet I'm still waiting for 3 schools to get back to me.  At this point, I think I'm going to have to send in the deposit, just in case.

So Simmons pulled the same "an admissions decision has been made and mailed to you" with me yesterday, but sent me an invite to an accepted students thing today, so I got in! Re: peeps who are moving to Boston from other places: suburbs are your friends, but you can still be expecting to pay at least $1300/mo for a one bedroom, utilities may or may not be included. Pretty much everywhere at least has a bus that will get you to the T and most colleges in Boston are close to the train or have bus stops, and most schools can get you discount monthly passes (usually like 12% off but better than nothing). Further out you have the commuter rail which is expensive as heckie. So essentially, find something in suburbs or expect to be sharing a house with like 3-4 other roommates.

Amanda87 reacted to alisham in clinical MSW - Am I taking the wrong route?
I wouldn't put too much stock in what an online person said.  It seems like it can be 1 of 2 things: either it's someone who's gotten a PhD in Psychology (or etc.) and is bitter because MSW's are doing therapy, too (though the PhD's do get paid more, so I don't know why they're bitter) or it's an MSW going through imposter syndrome and doesn't feel ready for therapy.  You can't really do much about the first thing (bitter people will be bitter regardless), but if it's the second thing, like Amanda87 said, you can do certificates and additional coursework to make you feel ready for therapy.  LCSW's are also required to do continuing education credits and a lot of the topics have to do with therapeutic techniques/trauma/anything else.
No one can tell you what to do.  But look at it this way: if you do end up going the PhD and the PsyD route and eventually figure out that therapy is not for you or you no longer want to do it, there are other things you can do.  However, according to PhD's I know, you'll end up in research and/or teaching, but will be overqualified for other types of jobs.  If you end up going the MSW route and decide that you don't like therapy, there are so many other things you can do that don't involve therapy.  You aren't limited to therapy, research, and teaching with an MSW.

There's no need to be apologetic about being political. Quite the opposite--politics belongs to the people, not the few. We rely on your ability, as a historian, to delineate patterns across time and geography, so we see the present with such lucidity that we understand the dangers, and organize to avert a catastrophe. You, of all people, should realize that studying history is in itself political, as history--as well as the study of history--is always about a vision... now which vision? is entirely up to you.

Yes! I live in a super red state (which I hate, by the way) and can't wait to get out and live in Massachusetts later this year. The weekend after the election, someone went around and spray painted swastikas on street signs just outside of town. This election has really emboldened the worst kinds of people. On the other hand, there are also a lot of people that are willing to fight for everyone's rights (myself included). But yes, I wholeheartedly agree with really researching the towns that you're looking at living in. There's also a City Guide section of the forums where you can talk to people that live there or other people that are thinking of moving to an area.

We have to stop saying that we need to "not sound political".  Being political and debating those opinions are a vital element of a democracy.  When we stop doing that we have problems.  We have Trump today because we stopped debating, because we all stopped being political.  Yes this is absolutely political.  Most of us are not xenophobic jerks scared of what the future holds, most of us fully support bright and talented people from all over the world coming into this country, most of us support saving the lives of thousands of families (who are in part forced to leave because of US interference in their part of the world).  This is a forum of educated people who will have differing opinions from my own, but I think we can offer our support to international students w/o disclaimers of not being political.  Supporting them is political, and that's ok.
Otherwise I too stand with you all.  As a hispanic American I too have some uncertainty, but not nearly the kind that an international student must feel after this week.
