Does anybody out there know how gradcafe got started? Who gathered all these people? Preferably in the form of old wise tales, madrigals, Odyssean and the like

Check out the MA program in psychology at SDSU. "It is particularly appropriate for students who need advanced work to strengthen their profiles in preparation for application to Ph.D. programs", or so they say on their website.

    Hello!
I am graduating from Cleveland State University's MA in Clinical Psychology this May. I have had Research Assistantship all 4 semesters which has led to 7 posters, 4 at national conferences and 3 at regional conferences! It's a pretty competitive program (around 100+ applicants each year) and the faculty members really want to help you establish clinical and research experience to get into Ph.D programs. To put this into perspective, I graduated from a competitive undergraduate university with 3 years of research experience and applied to clinical programs in 2015 with zero interviews. I reapplied to Ph.D programs and I am interviewing at 9 different schools. Some say that if you need to advance your research experience you should find an RA position in a research lab, but my education was funded, I gained a ton of research experience, and some of my courses will transfer into the Ph.D programs I've applied to.

    Good luck!

Then you have to sort of look at their reputation. Most of the MS programs in Clinical Psych that I have seen are in smaller branches of major universities. Although, even Harvard and some of the Ivy's have programs, but they may not necessarily fit your goals. The one I am interested in is a feeder program for medical Clinical doctoral programs, and also can prepare you for licensure.

Oh no! Clinical Psychology is so stressful and competitive! Fortunately I am very happy about one of my back ups- MS in Clinical Psych to obtain licensure as a psychology associate.

Regardless of what the interview sites tell you about having meals/snacks always ALWAYS have your own snacks and water with you!  This is especially important if you're on a special diet, have allergies, or are just plain picky.  Some programs are not very organized and you may have so many things scheduled for your day that you get 5 minutes to scarf something down.  Or you may find that their understanding of your dietary needs is horribly inaccurate or the special meal requested for you is forgotten or still not something you can eat.  Some places also just have terrible food regardless of what is served.  I just carried my purse with whatever I needed in it, but other applicants carried messenger bags or briefcases.  Most programs also load you down with swag.....pamphlets, brochures, random office supplies, water bottles, etc so having a bag is helpful anyway.  Oh and have kleenex, cough drops, and hand sanitizer.

You could also do a PhD in developmental psych & then later do a "re specialization" in clinical... There aren't as many respecialization programs (obviously) but they only take like, two years (I think), and shouldn't be nearly as hard to get into!

Hi friends! Like others on here, I've been reading through the forum for several weeks now to check on updates and whatnot. Figured I'd finally join and send positive vibes to everyone here! I've only applied to three schools, and this is the first notice I've received. Pretty excited!!

I have been practicing with one of my mentors and he has pointed out to be careful with closed body language such as crossing of arms. I do this automatically when I become nervous. Also, I need to focus on framing everything in a positive manner. I tend to be fairly frank and to the point. So I need to be sure that what I say does not come across as negative.
    Another question to consider.
Can you tell me about a time when you have had to confront an ethical or moral dilemma? Maybe an issue within yourself or with others, and how did you handle it?

My first interview is in 2 days, getting pretty nervous...
I thought I'd share a list of questions that my current PI gave me to prepare with. I hope this is helpful!
-Why do you want to work with me? (research fit, ideas on mentorship)

-What are the questions you want to pursue in grad school? (you don’t have to KNOW your thesis plans but you should have a good sense of what you are excited about). SPEND THE MOST TIME HERE ON THIS

QUESTION -Tell me about your clinical experience (anything with humans, but prioritize the high-risk stuff)
-Tell me about your stats background (mention data comfort, programs, analysis experience, aspirations)

-What do you do for fun? (making sure you have a life) -What do you think your biggest challenge will be in our program?

-What do you think about our city? (can you handle snow, small towns, cost of living, etc)

Trying to figure that out right now. I'll be driving home from another interview, but if I can make it in time I want to do the in-person interview.

I'm not @fuzzylogician, but one helpful thing you can do is read up on the professor's work ahead of time and think of some interesting questions you would want to ask! This way, if you freeze up in the moment because you're so excited about their work, you have pre-determined, intelligent questions to ask. Plus, then you get to learn even more about the things that make the professor awesome and have a better interaction with them.
Also, remember that they chose you to come on this interview. That means someone in a position to decide these things decided you are a good fit and they are interested in getting to know you better. So when you feel self-conscious, try to remember that they picked you to be here, and that means you already did something to impress them!

Great question @abnumber5 I have tried to go with the flow and listen as much as I talk, but I get incredibly self-conscious. I almost feel star struck. As they're talking about Amazing U and Amazing Prof, I am thinking, "Eek! This sounds amazing! I want to go right now! Oh Geez I hope I'm not screwing this up because it sounds amazing!" And so on the hamster wheel goes. So I end up saying, "Hmm that sounds interesting!" "Cool" etc and I feel dumb about that too.
Any advice @fuzzylogician on what to say after Awesome Prof shares something about his work that doesn't sound childish, pandering, or inane? ?

This sounds like a good plan. You don't need to worry too much about proving anything. They are interviewing you; that means they already consider you a strong candidate and a good fit. Just be yourself and be ready to talk about your research and background, and why Awesome U and Awesome Prof are a good fit.

I would think that any cultural attire is considered fine, especially in this field. You could always ask the graduate students their take if you aren't sure. In a past graduate interview (counseling program), at least 3 women in the group had nose/other facial piercings. They looked professional, and the interview panel didn't mind (they were accepted.)

Fellow vocabulary lover, and I have the same irritation at that word. No matter how many times I remind myself what it means, my brain always skids off towards associations with "garrison" and the like, which get me nowhere near "trivial conversation".
Like @dagnabbit above, I also found "chary" particularly useless.

An infinite amount, I think partly because of the very low acceptance rates. Even though I applied to Psychology programs, I'm in Counseling Psych and applied to the geographical region of the South/Deep South where admissions seems to be slow.
It seems to also be regional and based on due dates. Since Clinical Psychology has so many applicants and so few accepted, they begin the process much earlier to whittle down the numbers.
