GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from chai time in Love, Academia and Success
So real talk, I was married for a while. Though not the only contributing factor, I knew the marriage was over the second I started talking about going to grad school and his response was that I wasn't allowed to unless it paid us. I'm so happy to be divorced because I'm no longer anchored by someone keeping me from living the life I want to live. AKA I have dreams and aspirations and I'm not willing to give up on those for a partner (and a partner shouldn't ask you to, though there may be some situations where you choose to value the partner over the dream). I'm not gonna lie and say it'll be easy to find the right partner, because it honestly won't, but you should not have to compromise your values in such an extreme way for the chance at romantic fulfillment. I hope you find a partner who will make you happy and who values your passions and goals as much as you do. <3

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Phoenix88 in How early is early in moving to a new school and how late is late?
@GirtonOramsay I just had a grad student in my program tour 5 apartments for me yesterday. I told them what I was looking to find out from their tour and they were able to give me a ton of pictures, some video, and a lot of insight that made me much more confident when telling the property manager which place I'd like to move into in August. I did ask for virtual tours from various property managers, but all of them were much more receptive to me having a "proxy" tour in my stead. I thanked the grad student multiple times and they said to just buy them a coffee when I get there, haha.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Faith786 in Publishing - Strategies, resources, etc.
Thanks for bumping this! One of the problems I see with the "fix and submit to lower tier" technique (that I don't think has been mentioned yet) is:
If a publisher (of any kind) is giving you feedback on what needs to be improved for acceptance, it's not really a rejection. They are taking the time to tell you what they need to see in order to publish you so fix it and resubmit to that publisher. I speak a lot with published writers (in a variety of contexts-comic books, games, fiction, nonfiction, etc) and have attended many writers/publisher panels and this is one of the pieces of advice I've heard time and time again. Stop thinking of rejection as rejection (unless they tell you no or don't say anything at all). If they take the time to give you feedback (outside of "consider this publication instead") they are interested in publishing you. Your work just isn't there yet.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from Waltzfordebby in How much do rankings matter?
Instead of focusing on rank as much (although it can be important in anthro), focus on the opportunities the school gives you and placement of recent grads. Do recent grads land more teaching or industry positions? They should also list their percentages (grads with jobs in the field, grads with jobs overall, etc). Does the program pay for you to attend national or international conferences? Are they set up so that you can get multiple publications out while attending? Do they invite visiting scholars and arrange some kind of time for students to mingle with these scholars? Do they have you TA? Are TAs mainly graders or could you become an Instructor of Record after a year or two?
Networking is an important aspect of landing a job in the future (as are publications, conference presentations, and other things to beef up your CV) so programs that incorporate these opportunities may be better for your career interests (which you can then back up with their job placement data).

Thanks @Oklash!
For me, I didn't apply this time with one school in mind. In fact, I made a point not to rank my school list before being accepted so I could go in without bias. I chose a great program, but it was really hard to choose between them and one other program. And I hate saying no, haha.

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from madamoiselle in So... what now?
I'm in a show right now so I'm doing 3 performances every weekend. Hoping to pick up a zumba class after the show to fill some of my time. I'm also working on a paper for a conference that's due this week so that's taking up a lot of time. Oh, and working full time, exercising, reading, modding on Twitch, and prepping for my move. It's a lot, but I think I'm a good mix of stressful and relaxing activities.

@E-P My MA research was on Twitch and I conducted some interviews at TwitchCon last year that led to some interesting information I'd like to present. The theme is just super close to my interests and past research.

Individual @surprise_quiche . I don't really think I'll get accepted this year (first year ever submitting to Comm), but at least it's good practice, haha.

Good luck @GreenEyedTrombonist!
Gonna submit my revised BA thesis! It'll be my first time submitting to a conference, let alone one in Communications...

@sprklinthe I get that this can be a sore subject, but that's actually why this thread was made. I didn't get in anywhere last year and it hurt. Luckily, there are multiple places to discuss that (and the worry when waiting) on this forum. This thread was specifically created so that there would be a place for those with admissions to let off stress without making those still waiting feel bad.
Best of luck with your programs! Hopefully, you'll be joining us in worrying over the decision process soon enough! <3

GreenEyedTrombonist got a reaction from surprise_quiche in Humor: The Reveal Cake
Here's how I told my parents. For context, we have a whiteboard in the laundry room that I've been using to keep track of my acceptances and their stats. I erased all that, drew this, and gave them a hint in the morning that it was there (after my mother had already started some laundry and not noticed it, haha). The speech bubble says, "[GreenEyedTrombonist] is going to..."
I also sent the picture, with the text, to my sister.

We are here for you and know how hard it is to be waiting while overs move forward. I know (for me) feeling discouraged or not wanting to bring people down with bad or no news makes me not post results, but just know that you're amazing and have our support with whatever's going on!

Back home from Madison! The visit was awesome and I really liked getting the chance to chill with the other prospectives in my track.
