  1. In my case, I already contacted some PIs whom I want to do my rotations. I think it is better they know beforehand that you're interested in working with them for your rotations and probably for your thesis. Sometimes, they accept a certain number of students per rotation so it's better to contact them early.  One of the PIs that I contacted told me that I could rotate in her lab at the start of the Fall semester. However, if you're still undecided which lab to rotate I think you will have a chance to meet all of the PIs and know their research projects. From there you can start to select. Hope it helps.

In general, if people start getting emails for interviews from schools that you've applied to and you haven't received an email yet, is that an ultimately doomed school? Or do they send out emails in waves?

You can email the program coordinator. I was also feeling the same thing when I don't receive any emails from schools. But when I emailed the program coordinators, some of them are still evaluating my application and will let me know the result. So there is still hope! :-)

Caveat: if you're submitting weak letters that aren't helping your case just because the application says you can submit 5, don't. Only submit letters that help your application. If that means just three stellar ones, that is much better than 3 stellar ones and 2 that work against you.

Submitting two strong letters and one weaker one that at least touches on something the others might not is fine. Insisting on submitting five where some might be weak might not be wise. In any event, the answer really is "it depends". But I really don't think the advice to always submit the maximum is necessarily correct in all cases.

So you should ask recommendation from those people that will make your application stronger whether it is less or more than 3 recommendations.

I dont have like concrete evidence they do or dont, but judging off of survey and the emails I think its by program. I got a general email from DBBS followed by a program specific email. I know someone else also got a washu biochem invite on here the same day as me.....dont know how much that helps.

What major you applied to WashU DBBS?
