I made it round three last year and received HM. This year I got to round 5 and I am alternate. I wonder how many alternates actually make it? Anyone hear of alternates who were awarded the fellowship in the past?

Hi, welcome to the forum! I understand that this rejection stings. Rejection always hurts. However, you said the reviewers gave you high marks. That doesn't sound like they "deemed (your) project inadequate". They just felt other applicants suited the fellowship best. Similar to the way how grad schools make decisions. 
That said, I don't think the reviewers were "random academics", and I seriously doubt they "don't know what they're doing". Also, I'm not sure what position you're in to decide those who did get the fellowship don't deserve it. You said the person in your cohort had work that is as good as yours. 
Yes, the rejection feels terrible, but these are things you can't really blame others for. I'm sure your application was amazing. It just wasn't everything they were looking for.

He turned it in at 4:48pm y'all! Cutting it close but still in there! I actually have really high hopes now. I have a strong application I think which is why I was so disappointed at the thought of not being considered. I hope everyone that has posted here is selected. Good luck to you all?

@kiki_2_4 This happened to me last year. My only recommender from my current institution was dealing with personal health issue and misread that it was 5pm eastern standard instead of pacific. I was devastated because my feedback mentioned the lack of recommender from the current institution. This year I managed to get 5 recommenders just in case and told them the deadline was the day before the actual deadline. 

@kiki_2_4 If it's the day of and they agreed to do it, I think it's ok to be persistent. Don't hesitate to call them, send persistent emails, or if you're in the same place, visit their office.

Now that I've received my revised funding offer from UCI, I'm ready to submit my SIR. It's a relief to finally be done with this part of the process.

No offense Brooke, I know it can be hard sometimes, but don't you have two offers? If it makes you feel better at all I'm an academic and nobody picked my up at all. Straight rejection. Being down on yourself won't make your situation any better. Maybe try to get a job with the Department of Public Safety at a school you could possibly go to and take classes on remitted tuition until the professors know you and you can apply again.
I'm gonna have to be smart about going to school since they don't think I would make the cut/aren't willing to pay for me. If you want to feel sad for yourself and work at Walmart you definitely can, but it's a little hurtful to pretend that everyone with an academic focused application is just getting into all the schools. We're not.
