sunT - You are correct. The lack of independence of candidates does increase your chances (e.g. if the same 100 candidates interviewed at 5 schools, each of which only accepted 20 students a year, they would all get in somewhere.  So your chance for acceptance would be 100%, not what you would get with my formula (1 - .805 = 67%).  So my formula should be considered a lower bound.
Anyway, daughter mortified that I'm posting on this board, so I will retreat to the sidelines...

Thanks! That's so cool you listen! I started a different podcast before this (about the Hunger Games series, lol total nerd here) and once I had a better handle on the tech side of things I started my genetics podcast. It's been so fun having different guests on!

No wayyyy this is Kira?!? That's so exciting. I've been listening to DNA Today for just under a year now. SO helpful to gain insight into the field.

I was wondering if you were on the forum. I'm super impressed at the fact that you have your own podcast. How did that come about?? Its one of the podcasts I listen to while I'm at work.

@soon2beGC and @TAGC Thank you both for your support  You are both clearly very qualified candidates.. I mean, look at those interview lists!
It helps a lot to hear from other candidates about not being discouraged by let-downs from one or two schools. It's really encouraging me to keep a more positive outlook. So I guess we shall make the best of the interviews with programs who are showing interest in us. Best of luck to you both!

A bit lost and confused here, looking to see if anyone else has been in the same boat.
I applied for a program last year that I got an interview with. I didn't get accepted or waitlisted, but in their rejection call they phrased it like "in the highly unlikely event that you don't get accepted elsewhere, we strongly encourage you to apply next year." Additionally, I phoned for feedback, and they informed me that all of my academia, advocacy, volunteer experiences were very strong and I was a great applicant.. but I could  improve on my interview skills a bit. Additionally they told me that they don't normally take students right out of uni so to try again next year.
So I did, I applied to their program this year, and I didn't even get considered for an interview. Received a rejection email today. I'm lost as to what to think.
Anybody else have this experience? I'm going to try to message the coordinator later in the year and ask for feedback, but I don't know if they'll even do that because they don't normally provide feedback unless you interviewed.

I haven't heard back from Manitoba (UofM) either, and my application says "Complete, under review by department." It has since the day all my documents were submitted. I have a feeling they're either sending out another round of interviews or something of the sort.. because someone earlier on here said they received a rejection email recently (if they did indeed mean Manitoba when they said UofM). So perhaps no news is good news. All hope is not lost yet!

I think you're too worried. You got the interview. You don't need to prove yourself on your application anymore. It's like a clean slate. From this point forward, schools will choose on personalities best suited for their program, and who can present themselves as qualified.  I mean I have never interviewed someone applying to a school program, but I have interviewed several people for jobs.
Sometimes the best application, is just not a good fit for the office environment after the interview. Then, sometimes, you realize that someone lied on their application during the interview. You are good enough. Now you just have to show them that you'll fit in and you're equipped to be their student.

Congratulations though! You are an equal with everyone else who has an interview, don't forget.

That makes sense. Nervewracking indeed! Well keep us updated if Manitoba sends you confirmation emails for the interview, and above all, congratulations!! I think we met last year at Toronto and McGill. I remember you telling me your username. Wishing you luck this year =)

I think Gadgette sums this up pretty well and I am in the same boat without having direct feedback either.
However, I have zero direct genetic counseling experience because it is not allowed in my state, but I have done informational interviews with genetic counselors, watched the GC interview videos on the NSGC website (lets you see 3 real GC and patient interactions), spent a semester as a Patient Advocate Intern at my university hospital and I am currently getting trained to work as a Peer Counselor at the local AIDS foundation. I think all of these experiences will more than make up for my lack of direct exposure. In the same respect, I think your experience as a Peer counselor is extremely helpful and also having research in genetics is something that might give you an edge for any programs that are more research based.
While many admission committees do realize that it is hard to get experience, but they still expect you to know exactly what a GC does and have good commentary and opinions as I have heard some interviewers will have scenario questions that are based off of recent issues in genetic counseling, so definitely start reading up on these issues if you haven't already!

I haven't gotten any feedback yet, so this is all with a grain of salt. One of the things that came up multiple times at this past AEC was that education is really limited by the capacity for students in clinics. While the discussion was focused on clinical during Master's programs, I think the field as a whole is aware that there just aren't a ton of places that can accommodate students. Having some shadowing, even one day, is great! The NSGC website lets you see which counselors are ok with student contact. See if anyone is open to a phone interview.
You're academic background is strong. (Glad my grades aren't being compared to yours!) If you're concerned I would suggest finding advocacy experiences. Working with individuals with disabilities, work suicide hotlines, volunteer with rape/domestic violence groups...
    Hope this helps!
