Most of the time for my school it is people who have completely disregarded our schools GRE and GPA requirements.  The school will get calls from people with 300 GRE scores when our program asks for a 311+ or 3.4 GPA when most applications are 3.6+

Sometimes the school will say they can't give you exact info...but I'll bet if your GRE or GPA does not meet their minimum requirements that is the most likely factor.  If you already are aware those stats don't line up asking about your essay or letters won't help.  Also the letters stay anonymous so no school is allowed to reveal if someone wrote you a bad req!

    Good luck re-applying!

My GRE scores were lower than what's listed on ASHA's edfind for some of the CUNY schools I applied to but my GPA was within their bracket. Some of the schools refered me to the right people who gave me the appropriate responses to my question. They pointed out that "some" of my grades were not competitive as they require B or better in all prerequisite coursework.... ALL OF MY GRADES WERE B or better (mostly A's & B+'s) except for ONE bad grade in Physics of Music and Sound (C+). Mind you - in my Speech and Hearing Science classes I got A's in. GRE score improvement was mentioned which I'm not surprised about. But I was shocked when one of them said "Most of the letters of recommendation did not express your capabilities and potential as a clinician and successful professional; they were very generic." The professors I got LOR from were professors I've taken NUMEROUS classes from and who I am still in contact with. I discussed what I would like included.. and yet....they were GENERIC???! I don't know who to be upset with when I read that. One of them also said I did not complete a section of the application (Work Experience). UGH I am definitely upset at myself at that one because now I'll never know if I would have gotten accepted if they had seen the years of experience I have in the field. SMH. At this point in time I don't think I will be reapplying, but I have one more college to hear from (my alma mater) so I'll see what happens ?

If you want to work in schools, work in schools. Public Service Loan Forgiveness is significantly easier to achieve in the schools than in hospitals. Also, SNFs make more money than hospitals, if you do decide to just take the higher paying job.

Haha.. I wish it was that easy and originally I thought it was. But there are a number of factors that go into where I ultimately decide to work other than my desire to work in a particular setting. So unfortunately, some sacrifices may have to be made for a while in terms of where I would like to work. Could you let me know what is SNF? And how is the PSLF significantly easier to achieve in the schools than hospitals?

Look into other jobs! I joined care.com and got a job babysitting. In big cities, I know they pay $15-20 an hour babysitting or more, depending on location. I know in NY it has to be big pay, too!!! Also, I don't know your background, but you can make even more if you are a teacher or come from a school based job and find a tutoring job. Much better pay and fun job :)

That's a great idea as well! I don't know how I never signed up for care.com yet. I used to get paid $20+ per hour for one child I babysat in the city (big money + no tax deducted!) from one family that hired me off of teachercare.com - similar site. I'll look into that right now!

Ugh.  I think you're making a good decision, as painful as it may seem.  You're two years away from your dream job.  Forget the years that you'll spend paying it all back off.  At least you'll be doing something you love (I'm assuming here).

Thanks. And I better love it after all this money I'll have to owe ? I'm trying my hardest to plan the best way to pay this off though to help ease the stress. Because there's no way I can "forget" all the years I'll spend paying off this unbelievable amount of debt. Then factoring us wanting to have children, moving and getting a house, plus other life factors... It'll be a looming cloud of doom for me if I don't figure out how I will tackle this.

So I'm looking into loan forgiveness, working in hospitals instead of my dream of working in schools, since SLPs make more money in hospitals, and a whole bunch of other avenues. I wish more people already in their careers who used this site would give their two cents on how they plan on repaying their debt but they have probably long forgotten about this site ?

Does this mean you're turning down the school you've been accepted to in hopes of getting in another year?  Debt is such a scary thing, I can relate.  It all boils down to what you can live with.  Good luck with either decision!  I know I get sick every time I think about the amount of debt I'll be in after I'm done with grad school.

Unfortunately, no. The CUNY schools I contacted basically said I needed to retake the GREs and one of my prerequisite classes to be a more competitive applicant. I really don't want to delay becoming an SLP any more than life has already, so I will have to suck up the 100K for time sake smh. If it was just the GREs I would've given it another shot. But retaking courses at this point?? Nuh uh. ?

  5. Currently, I got responses from CUNY schools that there was no specific reason listed and therefore they had no pointers on how I can improve my chances the next time around. Another referred me to the graduate advisor of the program. We'll see what she says I guess ? this is not very helpful so far though. I'm trying to figure out if I should take the GREs again but none of these schools are responding ?

  6. Is this possible? I've researched it and seen that it is I guess "possible" but in rare occasions it seems. My school is way too expensive, so if I could transfer to a SUNY/CUNY after the first semester of classes (12 credits), that would work much better for me and ease my loan anxiety. I looked up schools in NY to see if they have any info on transferring graduate credits but there is hardly any info out there on that. Would love to get some input on this and/or personal experiences regarding this.

@SpeechLaedy That is an insane amount of debt! Which gives you a really hard decision to make :( Do you actually need the full amount of the loans they're offering to you or will you get a refund? For example I take the full amount to get a refund to pay my rent/cost of living. If your bill is less than the amount of loans they awarded you you can elect to only accept part of it.

I know that the CUNYs can be super competitive, but I'm going to a SUNY and my tuition for fall semester is like $6,500. Is moving out of the city an option?

I hope everything works out for you!

I just spent a bunch of time scouring through the financial aid page and you were right. I actually don't need the full 50K for the year. I will need 37K of that to pay for tuition. Which brings it down slightly but it's still well over 100K ?. Moving out of state is no longer an option for us, unfortunately. So it's NY or nothing. I went to CUNY schools in my undergrad so I am much acquainted with their refreshingly low tuition. I'm wondering if transferring out of LIU's program would be an option, but from what I can tell, it's not a common thing to do since most institutions do not have a section in their faq addressing graduate transfer students. I'm trying to think of everything I can in order to escape this mountain o'debt so hopefully something good will come out of all of my digging. Sigh... Thanks a bunch for your input!

Hello! I was in a similar situation when u started. Look and see if there is any kind of tuition waiver or GAship type thing you can do to help reduce the cost. Like the previous poster said, do you have to take the full amount or can you just take out the tuition part? I think you can only take out 120k max, so I would definitely look into other options before you apply again. Good luck!

I already interviewed for the GA position in the speech clinic at LIU. They should be getting back to me sometime next month. But it's nothing special monetarily, though. It's basically a terribly paying on-campus job ($10/hr with no effect on tuition) that is more beneficial for your experience as an SLP and networking. And after looking further into my financial aid page, I discovered I will be owing $120K instead of $145K. Still a lot but it meets maximum loan amount. I will have to call FedLoan to find out what the max is for sure. Thanks for mentioning that

  8. So.. I actually came to the most JARRING reality today. I just went on myLIU to accept my loans (which I thought were 25K/year) and they are instead - 25K per TERM! Therefore, I will not owe 95K as I originally thought. Somehow I overlooked the actual cost of attendance, so in addition to the 45K i have already, 100K will be added once I'm done... making it a whopping $145,000+ worth of debt!!!!!!!! I'm about to cry and throw up all at the same time. I live with my husband who pays all the bills (except my credit card bills). My income which is less than 25K a year which is NOTHING can not pay for my monthly necessities AND the interest of these loans. I had to put my loans on deferment/forbearance recent;y for that same reason. I couldn't afford even the lowest monthly payments. I have never been a reckless spender, so I don't have the issue of having to budget and prioritize because I already prioritize. I don't even spend money on eating out more than once a month (if that). I don't go clothes shopping more than like every 5 years. SO when I say I can't afford this... I REALLY CAN'T!

This is so disheartening though. I have no idea what to do now. Does this mean that I now have to apply to schools all over again and only apply to CUNY's/SUNY's? UGHHHHHHHHH ?????????????????????

  9. I'm trying to figure out some sort of plan to pay off the $95K of debt I will owe after SLP grad school in NY. So I'm very interested to know how some of you plan to do so or how some of you already have done/are doing so. Some pointers would be greatly appreciated since that number is daunting to me every time I see it ?☹?

  10. I'm a teachers assistant at a special education school. There are a bunch of integrated classrooms and the age ranges from birth-12. There are about 15 SLPs on staff and many other types of therapies. You get to go to goal meetings and meet with the team of educators/therapists to talk about how each child can make progress, etc. I've observed almost all of the SLPs there and have seen an incredible range of pathologies from doing so and also from when I started as a floater teacher's aide (I helped every classroom in the entire school within my first year there). I'm now a permanent TA in an 8:1:3 ABA preschool classroom and love that I get to see the progress of each child from the beginning to the end of the year. Truly remarkable. So I think doing something like that would be a great experience if there is anything like that available in your area. Wait, I just saw that you're in NY as well. Are you located on Long Island or in the city/boroughs?

I just don't know anymore guys.

I have applied for the last 3 years and continue to be rejected.. IT SUCKS. I have a low GPA (2.86) took 4 post bacc classes did well, post bacc gpa is 3.6. I did ok on my GRES but am retaking to get in the 50th percentile. I have worked as an SLP-A for 2 years.. WHAT DO I DO? HOW CAN I GET IN? can anyone recommend schools that do not only look at numbers/ have a GPA/GRE cutoff?! please anything helps. I honestly don't know what else I can do! I basically missed my last year during undergrad due to sickness but there is nothing I can do :( I AM SO STRESSED OUT PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME! advice would be awesome

In addition to what the other posters have said (which I am glad they mentioned because I was literally going to type the same exact things they said, so I don't have to write as much now lol).. Have you ever gotten any interviews for the schools you applied to in the last 3 years? If so, how did they go? Are you a strong interviewer or does that aspect need improvement? Has anyone looked over your statement of purpose? If you haven't done so already, try going to the writing center at the college you last attended and also ask professors in the SLP field to look it over and give their thoughts on how you could possibly improve it. I think a total of 5 or 6 people looked over my personal statements for each school. Oh and have you used the same personal statements each time you've applied or did you alter them each cycle you applied? I'd be happy to look it over for you if you would like. I had sub-par stats as well but my personal statement along with my interviews and recommendations got me accepted to two schools

    I read ur other posts.

so are you going to LIU?

I heard it's under probation. Does that affect you if you are enrolled?

LIU Brooklyn is under probation, not Post. I don't recall what the probation status means for current and prospective students, but I believe ASHA has a section on their website that explains it. And yes, I'll be attending LIU Post.

Thank you very much for your encouragement.

I just took my GRE today, it turned out V:152, Q: 153, AW is not known yet (i guess sth 3-3.5). I did better on verbal than I expected and worse on quantitative.

I am not sure whether I should take it again, since I still got time.

Anyways, I do see that you have quite similar stats with mine, and the schools u applied are pretty much the one I was going to apply. Did you get an interview chance in any of the CUNYs? How did they go?

ALL the cunys shot me down with the quickness. But then again, I think I could've gotten at least an interview with Lehman if my statement of purpose had included my experience learning from the director of the program there when she was employed at Queens College. I didn't add anything about her or say anything I wanted to say due to time constraints. But ah well. I'd say to check out the typically accepted GRE scores at the specific CUNYs you're interested in on ASHA's Edfind to see if you're in the range. If you really want to get in one of them, you may want to make sure you're at the top of these ranges and possibly retake it. $200 is a lot to take out each time to retake, but at least in the long run, if you get into a CUNY, the amount you will pay as opposed to a private college will be much less. All the best!!

As far as classroom materials go, I would do what works best for you. Don't worry about what your classmates are doing. My professors all recommend taking notes by hand instead of on a computer, but there are still a few who do. Personally I have a binder where I keep powerpoints/outlines, my notes, and assignments. I use a backpack because I have so many things to carry every day that a messenger bag would kill my shoulders.

I bought a roller bag for that exact reason. Best thing I ever did for my back.

  15. Use GreenlightTestPrep!!! Same people who do the Magoosh videos give you the same videos but they are FREE!! And they are very responsive on their website GreenlightTestPrep.com. I highly recommend it. Definitely helped me a lot.

And also, see if you can practice with someone to prepare for interviews. Research how people with anxiety deal with interviews and see if anything others have done may be able to help you as well. Don't give up! I went to school and got my bachelors in 2015 in Psychology as well! And just like you, I did my prerequisites right after, and finished after a year. I always had experience working with children, but you may be surprised how much of your experience can relate the the SLP field! You need people skills, the abilities to build a rapport with individuals - whether children or adults (or both!), and so much more.

Sounds to me like you need to write a knockout personal statement. Talk to your professors and definitely keep in touch with them throughout this process becaize they will be integral in helping you figure out how you can better market yourself as a graduate school candidate. Meet with a few of them and ask what they think colleges are looking for in a personal statement and once you have written one, go back to them and ask how you can make improvements. Go to the wiring center at your school and have them check it too! I had 6 or so people check each of my SOP for each school before I sent them in.

Definitely don't be discouraged though! My GRE stats were low (Q: 141, V: 152, AW: 3.5) and I got accepted into a school. You just need one! Just keep in mind that if you have below a 4.0 on your AW section, you may have to write an essay at the interviews as well. I live in NY and applied to schools here so if you have any questions, feel free to message me.

I would really suggest working on getting great letters of recommendation (make sure you meet with the professors to discuss it, don't just ask if they can write it), writing a great SOP, and really working on your interview skills because if you land an interview.. you're definitely going to want to make yourself shine! You have some time to work on all of these things so don't sell yourself short, you can do it!

I'm not sure whether you should try to get a more related job or volunteer experience or not though since I'm not sure what your work entails. What do you do as a home visitor? And what other types of jobs do you have on your resume (if you don't mind me asking)?

  16. For the Teacher Loan Forgiveness, are we as future SLPs with TSSLD (required here in NY) eligible for the full $17,500 in loan forgiveness or just $5,000? This is what it says on the studentaid.gov website:

Service Beginning on or After Oct. 30, 2004

If your five complete and consecutive years of qualifying teacher service began on or after Oct. 30, 2004, please note the following:

    • You may receive up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness if you were a highly qualified full-time elementary or secondary school teacher.
    • You may receive up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness if, as certified by the chief administrative officer of the school where you were employed, you were
      • a highly qualified full-time mathematics or science teacher in an eligible secondary school; or
      • a highly qualified special education teacher whose primary responsibility was to provide special education to children with disabilities, and you taught children with disabilities that corresponded to your area of special education training and have demonstrated knowledge and teaching skills in the content areas of the curriculum that you taught.
