In addition (and this goes to international students that might be reading), residency status direct informs how we do taxes and what we report. There are some internal awards that my fellow American do not pay taxes for and I do. In my school, international students and scholars have access to workshops and free software and that made everything a little bit less confusing.
I have used Thomas Reuters software.

Honestly, the only way to succeed in grad school is to be yourself. If you are "on" all the time, you will be exhausted and your performance will suffer. If you let grad school consume your life, it can. So don't let it! Seriously. Schedule in downtime, "me" time, etc. As a grad student, I made time to go to happy hour, watch TV with my roommate, and travel to see friends and family. During my PhD coursework phase, I took up a martial art, joined a trivia team with friends, and started lifting weights at the gym, all of which I scheduled and engaged in regularly. I even went to multiple martial arts classes during the 10 days of my comprehensive exams because you can't just read and write all day. If you don't take time for yourself, you won't be successful (which means being burned out, not graduating, not doing well in courses/internships, etc.). Don't listen to anyone that tells you otherwise.

If you're planning to submit your application this upcoming December-January, you could start around october, november to reach out the potential PIs.  That's what I did.  I took the GREs over the summer which gave me enough time to prepare outside of school and take the exam at my own leisure.

People on this site really like talking and looking at rank, but I think it's important to look at individual research that PIs are conducting.  There isn't any point going to a school if there aren't professors doing work that you're interested in doing.  Also, when you're looking at schools online, you should think about the offers that you could possibly get in terms of funding.  Some schools are waaaay more generous than others.

    Hey all!
I really wanted to start an acceptance thread for a while, but I waited!  Hopefully, it's around a good time right now to start one.  I wanted to ask all of you macro/micro biologists on this site about what programs you'll be attending starting this fall.
Starting with me:  I'm attending USC's MBBO program~!  I'm going to be a Marine Biologist.  Where are you all attending and what program?  Or what two schools are you deciding between?

I didn't see a thread for USC, so I'll go ahead and start it! I'll be joining the Earth Science department in the Fall.
Where are people planning to live? I'm considering Palms/Culver City since it's so close to the light rail.

I'm irritated that I still haven't heard back from most of the schools that I applied to this year...  Not that it really matters at this point, but considering the amount of money I've paid to each school for the application fee, I think it's unacceptable how late they are past the decision date.

Don't worry, the next year is actually the first year you would qualify for it. You need to already be a graduate student when you apply and you need an advisor. It's run more like a grant so the PI will be your advisor but you write all of the materials. The solicitation opens each November and it's due in early February each year. But the practical deadline is like a week before because it's considered an actual grant from NASA, so it requires approvals at several levels within the school (for us, it's the department head, Graduate Dean, and the Office of Sponsored Research). Although there are no rules on when you can apply, the successful candidates are generally in 2nd to 4th year when they apply. Good luck

Probably quite clear from the title: Where should I be looking for additional fellowships for funding to attend graduate school in the United States as an international student?  I've already been accepted, and I have been awarded some stipends by the school.  However, if I can, I would like to be able to apply for a few others in order to better my quality of life as a student who cannot work outside of the institution.

Hey all!  I'm posting to see if there are any other people on this board who are going to attend a graduate program in Marine biology and related topics starting in the Fall of 2017.  I got into a school that I was very interested in; I'm excited, and I wanted other people to talk with about the field/their schools!  I'm also very nervous as I'm going from a chemistry background into a biology heavy program, and I hope I'll be able to keep up.

As someone who went to a school in a boring town for their undergrad, I would recommend you go with the PI whose project interests you the most.  You can live with living in a boring town, but you might regret doing research on something you are not as connected to.
