UIUC is too expensive.  I didn't mean to mislead....$58k.  It's basically off the table.

So, " school reputation does help (on visits, big departments were over-represented). If you work for a big name, their letter of recommendation means more."

--> where do UCiny and Purdue rate? (if you know)

Also...it's so irritating that Purdue has a budget squeeze and they're hard graders...but not enough to totally ding them....yet my daughter somehow liked the campus and people....there doesn't seem to be any slam dunk in the uc vs purdue decision

You make a good point about research - perhaps the co-opping at UC would be good for my daughter... ??

I would say Purdue is more highly respected (but i'm not from the US, so my view is somewhat twisted)

Other side of the coin, here.

My daughter is accepted into Purdue, University of Cincinnati (accepted into the Honors program), Miami University, Denison, and UIUC (but it's crazy expensive out of state).

She's studious, has some social anxiety (reserved), high gpa in high school.  She loves to learn, to read, and said that she IS going to graduate school.  So, I want to compare undergrad colleges on that basis.

So, Grades matter most?  ***Does it matter much where you go to school (school reputation)?***

Is Research One important ?  or is that a hindrance (I hear complaints of professors who are unavailable because so busy with research).   If that's a major issue, we could even consider Denison, though she wants a big school (she is tired of her small school).

But the place she personally liked was Purdue.

It does have a reputation as a great school.  But - Tough graders / grade deflation?  Also - one guy told me - outdated equipment.

One: it's hard to know if you want to go to grad school if you've never done research before (you might hate it). Research is definitely the most important, but school reputation does help (on visits, big departments were over-represented). If you work for a big name, their letter of recommendation means more. Out of the schools she got into, I would say UIUC has the best chemistry department (by some mile, tbh).

Those are helpful information! But it's strange that the school still hasn't sent an invitation to the open house…

I know someone with an interview from Scripps for org chem (she heard a while back); I think just not many on this forum have heard

Ugh, I applied for pchem and I know a bunch of pchem people have posted results already. Honestly, I'd rather receive a rejection than radio silence.

    Completely agree with you!

    All of chemistry.

I called Alison Ross (she's the grad program coordinator I think) and I kind of had to coax it out of her, she was kind of unhelpful at first.

    Ok thank you!

It's strange as I have not heard of anyone hearing back for Organic Chemistry. But perhaps those people are keeping quiet...

I called the admissions office at Georgia Tech today and the admissions officer told me that admissions are sent on a rolling basis via email throughout January and February. She did seem to think that more admissions were forthcoming.

Piggybacking off of that, in case anyone else is waiting for Caltech...I also called them today and they told me that most admissions offers have been sent out. She did say that a few more offers would go out, but that the majority of offers had been extended already.

That is useful to know about Caltech - thanks! Is that for all of Chemistry or a specific subfield?

Can I ask who you called? When I called I got a generic unhelpful reply....

Hi I've been lurking here for quite some time, anyone hear from Columbia or Scripps for the organic chemistry track? Seems like UNC and UW are lost causes for me.

I know someone who has an interview from Scripps (organic)

  8. Anyone else feeling the pressure to book visit days from prospective PIs?

While it's nice to be emailed by them, I find it stressful having to wait to organize visitation due to some schools not having released their verdicts yet.

To piggy back off of this - if you call and ask for a general timeline (IE, when they expect to have decisions out by) I don't think they mind - I've done that with a few of my schools. I wouldn't call to ask about a decision, though, as that might seem really pushy.

Did you ask Stanford or Cornell for a timeline? As I'd be interested to hear what they are!

I feel bad now after looking the admissions board that many people with weaker CVs and scores than mine got into top programs like Berkeley and Chapel Hill. I didn't apply because I thought my chances would be essentially zero, now I feel like I could have been accepted to those as well if I tried.

You are already applying to some great programs and as discussed earlier in this thread, Berkeley and Chapel Hill would have been harder to get into as an international student rather than a domestic student regardless of your CV and scores!

  11. I have got to the stage now where I dread the weekend because no grad offers come out...

INO, has anyone organised a visit weekend yet? I was wondering how it works... do you organise it all and then the department pays you back? Or do the department make suggestions for places to stay etc?

That's like 28k-ish take home? Quite nice, actually. Even though Berkeley is more expensive than most places.

Yup, something like that - I was quite surprised at how high it is. But like you said, I believe Berkeley is a very expensive place.

I got the same email and also haven't been contacted by a member of Chemistry's admissions committee - I feel like replying might not be worth it but I'm unsure.

Ok, that makes me feel better (was beginning to think they accepted me by mistake). I'm not going to reply to it.

I wonder if I can visit again even if I've accepted? I love it out there.

Oh that's who was CC'd on mine too! I did mention her but there's another professor i would like to work with. I wonder if that's an issue? Aaah, here I am getting bogged down in the details already...

If it's any help, for organic they CC'ed the same professor for everyone who organises all the visit weekends etc. Might be the same for you!
