  1. So I just realized I can't delete/edit my original post, but I just wanted to come back to update this for posterity. I wanted to say thank you to @PolicyApplier and to say that they are 110% correct in their analysis -- especially when it comes to having patience and being gentle with yourself. I'm pretty sure that almost everyone reading this thread can imagine how it feels to get rejected from the program you really want to go to; I know I was personally torn up about it. However, the universe often works in really bizarre ways. A few days after I wrote this post, I got admitted into both Harvard and Yale. I do not know how it happened, but I do know that many tears were shed. I just wanted to share my particular story as an anecdote to anyone whom this may resonate with. Keep chipping away it; after the breakdown comes the breakthrough.
  2. Just a note, but I will probably delete this post a bit later. Hi everyone. I just thought I would put this out here and see what advice I can get. I applied for a few schools this past cycle and I am coming to terms with the notion that I may very well be rejected from all of them. I am hoping to get into an MPP or MIA and so I am hoping to improve my application. Which schools might be a realistic target for me? Schools Applying To: seeking advice from you Undergraduate institution: a College in the NESCAC Undergraduate GPA: 3.18 Undergraduate Majors: Political Science, Japanese GRE- 155 (v), 154 (q), 5.0 (a) ---> I am studying for this and will raise my scores across the board. Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): >2 Years of Work Experience: 2 years + a Fulbright Scholarship Describe Relevant Work Experience: 1.5 years as an interpreter, 0.5 years in local/state government Future plans: I would like to work for the UN and/or become an FSO. Questions/concerns: Assuming I can actually get my GRE up to the mid-320s/low 330s, would an Ivy League School or an Oxbridge remain unattainable for me? I am actually most interested in the idea of going to UTokyo (because of the chance to also graduate from SIPA), but was recently rejected from the MPP and have since started to come back down to Earth. Could the LSE and/or Yale Jackson possibly be a fit? Can I do anything with this GPA and GRE?
  3. Congrats on making it to alternate status! I'm hoping that you get promoted imminently! I was an alternate for advanced Japanese in 2017 and ultimately I didn't get promoted back then Strictly speaking, I think the chances that you get promoted for advanced Japanese specifically are.. hmm.. well, slim I think. The article I posted a few weeks ago indicated that there are 26 slots total. I am not sure how many intermediate level students and advanced level students there will be, but assuming its evenly split, then there are 13 students per level. As an alternate, I learned that at least one of the people initially accepted have to decline in order for an alternate to be promoted. Finally, there's the overarching question of how many alternates CLS picks for per level. I have to imagine that they choose somewhere between three and ten alternates per level for a language like Japanese. Presuming that someone does decline the scholarship (which I was personally considering doing a month or two ago), we don't know what priority alternates get and in what sort've rank-order they'd be promoted in. I'd imagine that they'd use a randomized selection process at that point, perhaps giving a slight boost to those who haven't studied abroad before. In any case, I'm going to hope for you to get promoted and come! Let's hope for a favorable outcome.
  4. I think the results will p come out sometime this week. I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be this Friday but who knows. It could just as well be next week. Anyways, let's all hope for the best. I'm hoping that every person in this thread gets a favorable outcome.
  5. Semi-finalist for Advanced Japanese here. Hope everyone is doing well. Found this article: https://www.okayama-u.ac.jp/tp/news/news_id8283.html It confirms that the 2019 site will be Okayama University, which is the first time a National University has been selected as the CLS study site. It also confirms that there will be 26 students in the Japanese cohort in total. Moreover, I found a list of rankings for national universities in Japan. Shanghai Ranking ranks Okayama University just below Keio and a few spaces above Waseda. http://www.shanghairanking.com/World-University-Rankings-2018/Japan.html
  6. I was selected as an alternate for advanced Japanese, so I'm pretty bummed out about it because I don't foresee myself getting promoted anytime in the near future. I'll update you guys if I have any updates but it looks like this is the end of the line for me
  7. I'm kinda like, a pessimistic person I'd say - so the date I threw out there was completely unfounded (minus the guy who said 2 more weeks and my pessimism) lol. Sorry bud, but I do understand the anxiety bit. I've moved past that stage, personally. I think I'm too busy with school to be as stressed as before.
  8. lol if we're speculating, I vote for March 13th
  9. Guys - can we chill with the ad hominem attacks? We don't have to patronize, mock, or berate each other. We're all here, refreshing this thread constantly. We don't have to abandon our morals because some people we've never even met before needed an extension. The last page of this thread just makes us all look bad. Let's wring ourselves back in.
  10. I'm really feeling late next week sometime. March 10th the latest, y'know? I felt like this would be the case, just based on how it was last year.
  11. Well, I guess since this is the last full week of February, it could be this week? Otherwise they'd be late. I'll call next Tuesday if we don't hear anything
  12. I actually feel like it'd be early March for some reason
  13. Semi-finalist for Japanese here. Anyone else here for Japanese, btw? I'm wondering when we can expect the second round results. Based on previous years, I assume that results will come sometime in the latter half of this month. I won't lie; waiting for the results makes me anxious. Also, is the homestay for the duration of the program? That is to say that, for the majority of the program, are the participants primarily housed by area locals? I could understand why such would be the case, just looking for clarity.
