Hi all, I've been accepted to Portland State U for PhD in applied psychology. Awaiting final details of my funding package, but the stipend looks to be about $1,200/month. Seems impossible to live off of that in Portland. I'm sure I can borrow (I've filled out the FAFSA), but will be weighing this against programs in the very affordable St. Louis if I get in (have not yet heard back). I'm an older returning student (39) and my partner is a newly minted MSW who will be looking for her first social work job. We have not merged finances at this point and so I need to think of our living situation as essentially a roommate in terms of splitting costs 50-50. Does anyone here have feedback on living off of $1200/month in Portland and how students swing it?

If you don't mind, who is your POI? Congrats on getting in! :)

Hey there! I didn't apply to any of those schools but I currently work at UIC in their psych department now. I know that they had visiting/interview day back in late January or early February. I can't recall exactly when. To my knowledge, acceptances have been sent out already. The whole department seems to work pretty quickly.

Of course, there's always a chance I could be wrong. The department is massive so theirs always the possibility a few faculty haven't made acceptances yet.

I hope you hear good news soon!

Thanks for the update! I'm lucky enough to have an offer from another department at UIC so a rejection from the psych department is a-okay with me. Riddle me not surprised since the department doesn't have much of a focus on sexual violence/intimate partner violence prevention anymore. Congrats to anyone who has been extended offers! :)

You guys still alive? Anyone heard anything today? People are hearing back from other departments, but the Psychology people seem to be extra quiet today!

Here and waiting! I received an official rejection from Colorado State University but that has been it so far...

  4. New member, lurker for about a year. I am just feeling so anxious and nervous because I feel like I haven't heard ANYTHING. I suppose that isn't completely true, but it feels mostly true...

I received one email from UC Davis mentioning that I couldn't be invited for an interview...not exactly sure what that means but I'm considering it an unofficial 'no'.

I've also been wait-listed for the OHSU-PSU Public Health program.

Otherwise, I had one interview of sorts in early January from Portland State and that was it.

I'm desperate to know! Anyone else feeling like the inevitable doom and disappointment is approaching? -_-
