i chose Npsia! haven't accepted yet, but the deadline for the MPPA has passed and i couldn't get any response when i emailed/called asking for an extension- I'm sure its because of the strike. I think it was a blessing though because it made me make a decision rather than thinking about if for another 2/3 weeks....

i'm pretty sure i'll do the same,  just because the in class is from 4:30-5:30 then 6-9 and i don't do well with night classes... i think ill find the econ hard enough as it is...

Good call. I'm switching from the MPPA to NPSIA for next year. Shoot me a message if you wind up doing the econ through Athabasca.

    Cheers.

just joining in now (I've been lurking for a few days):P

I received an unofficial offer last week to npsia, my first choice is IOGP. my specialization hasn't been updated on carleton central. npsia is my first choice, but a few days ago I got into the MPPA at Carleton with almost full funding for the 2 years, and now am torn... I have till the 19th to accept, do you guys think we'll receive our official offers before then? I'm still thinking npsia regardless, i think? is there anyone here in the mppa program at carleton that could shed some light on their experience? or anyone that knows about the program?

also, congrats on everyones various acceptances and I'm crossing my fingers for those who have yet to hear!

    Yo dawg, you still deciding?

Hi! Can anybody give me some insight as to which program would be the better choice at Carleton University in Ottawa: Norman Paterson School of International Affairs versus Masters of Public Policy and Administration?

    1. What is the MPPA program reputation and experiences people have had?

    2. Any differences in co-op placements?

    3. What would be the best choice for future career prospects?

I'm not completely settled on a singular career path but the prestige of having a degree from NPSIA seems to open doors, whereas an MPPA may give me more options. Any advice/insight/experience sharing would be so great right now. I've got a limited time to respond to offers.

    Thanks :)

Hey, what'd you end up going with?

Thanks! I guess I'll go with Carleton, if they let me enrol soon lol. We should start a Facebook group for those doing econ over the summer!

Honestly, I think it depends on the person. I know for me, i need to dedicate my time to econ. I'll see how the work load is like the first few weeks and decide from there.

Does anyone have a sense for how different the Athabasca and Carleton syllabi are in terms of difficulty? I'm already taking other courses this summer so seeking the path of least resistance

Hi, thank you for replying and congratulations on being admitted.

I have several questions if you don't mind. What do you think is there different approaches towards domestic and international students? Have you any information whether there are other applicants admitted to UVic? As far as I am informed, you are the first. Please, share any information, it will be helpful.

Hey, honestly I think that they fucked up my app. Just because I had a transcript from an exchange uni, they made me pay an extra $30 for the international applicant fee. So I don't know what their deal is, I have to enquire as to if they treated my app as an int. student or what. I was really disappointed with their offer/ administration throughout the application process, which is too bad because I would've loved to be in Victoria for two years :'(

I'll PM you about the deets of my call if any come up. I'll ask if I was waitlisted, or second round/ first, etc. I was chatting with someone on here earlier who had gotten into Uvic.

    Hi guys,

I am already desperate for any news from UVic. Is there anybody who was admitted to the MPA program of UVic or maybe rejected? Does anyone have information when to anticipate any news? Please, respond! Thanks in advance!

Hey, got admitted an notified a couple days ago. Shit funding though compared to other places which is whack because you'd think it's less competitive than programs in Toronto/ Ottawa #bummmmmed

Nancy is a boss. I had heard rumors of a lady at GSPIA who is super nice and helpful and yes, friends, the rumors are true. If you phone in and Daniela answers, just hang up and keep trying until Nancy answers. And yeah, NPSIA has been top notch throughout this whole process. My theory is that this is the 1st year where everyone is starting to see NPSIA and GSPIA on equal footing and a whole lot of folks are even listing GSPIA as their top choice, so an increase in applications has probably thrown them a curve ball. In previous years it has probably just been Daniela in an office full of cobwebs quietly losing her mind getting 3 phone calls a week (which would explain some things) and then this year a 8.5 million people applied so they brought big Nancy in on contract to handle things but their online system just can't cope so its just been one huge technical glitch. It seems as if Daniela was able to process 2.5 applications back in early feb before things got crazy.

Do you think that'll translate into accepting more people into the program?

Hey guys, quick update on GSPIA. I just found out that there has been a technical glitch. Apparently I have been admitted since last week, but the system keeps showing under evaluation. I called the Graduate Office and now they need to get technical support... so crazy. Just thought I'd share. Also, my MPA "admitted" status for uOttawa is also now back to under evaluation. Basically, the girl on the phone said she can see my offers for both programs yet the system still shows under eval. Just something to keep in mind.

Did you just call and ask if you were admitted yet and if there was a discrepancy with your online profile, or were some jedi mind tricks involved?

Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice. So far I've been accepted to BSIA's Global Governance program with full funding and a fellowship at CIGI, UVic's MPA with at least $15,000 in funding (maybe more), and SFU's MPP program with $10,000 in funding. I'm hoping to hear back from U of T's MPP program shortly. I also submitted a late application to NPSIA a few days after the deadline, so I may still get accepted but I highly doubt I would receive any funding.

I have a strong interest in foreign policy but I have no desire to become an academic. I'm looking for a degree that will give me the best possible chance at finding a solid job in government, an NGO, or the private sector.

Of these five programs, which would you recommend?? I know that NPSIA is typically seen as the best choice, but BSIA's offer of a research fellowship with CIGI plus an internship seems pretty strong in terms of professional development opportunities.

    Thoughts??

Hey, when did you hear from UVic? I thought that I should've heard from them ages ago

Hey everyone, just found this thread and decided to jump into the fray. Congrats to everyone who's gotten an offer so far! Glad to see I'm not the only one who was slowly eaten alive by this waiting process.
I've been accepted to both Carleton's MPPA (28,000 funding) and NPSIA (still waiting on the official offer, but specialization just changed to Int'l Org's and Global Public Policy). I thought the application process was tough, but deciding between the two will definitely keep me up at night.

In response to Nirenight, I can't speak with any real authority about TA positions, but I believe you could still apply to be an "out-of-priority TA" through Carleton Central and hope, though positions can be pretty limited.

The co-op, however, is paid. From their brochure - "What is more, students in the MPPA program can take up to two paid, co-operative education work terms."
Also, don't know how up-to-date this is, but an idea of salaries for different Carleton co-op programs: https://mycareer.carleton.ca/home/hirestudent/HireACo-op/HiredAStudent/Salary.htm
Finally, general info on SPPA co-op: https://sppastudents.wordpress.com/co-op-info/

Did you get a TA/RA position?
