soproperlybasic got a reaction from Ydrl in 2021 Applicants Forum
Hi everyone, I'm thinking of applying to a few MFA programs in poetry. Currently enrolled in a PhD in philosophy in NYC (this is my third year) but I'm thinking I might want to switch direction, at least for a bit. I only plan on applying to programs in NYC (and thankfully ones with no GRE). I just want to try my luck, so no harm no foul if I get rejected. So I probably will only be applying to Columbia, NYU and Hunter.
I think I can somehow cobble together some good poems from my collection and have been submitting to a bunch of lit mags/journals lately, but the literary essay for Columbia is what intimidates me the most...

Also at Fordham and am happy to answer any questions you might have! I'm helping to run the admitted students day events, as well, so our paths may cross if you're visiting.

Can finally post here as well.. Just got word I was accepted off the waitlist at Fordham. Absolutely stoked.

Would love to be forced into the decision and I think I would be very happy at either. Fordham's job placement is good, New York is a plus for me, and @Rose-Colored Beetle @soproperlybasic have spoken glowingly so its reassuring to know that current students are happy there. The only big reason I'd still say Purdue edges out is that I want to study Deleuze and the DGS, Dan Smith, is one of the best Deleuze academics in the English speaking world. I'm traveling east from California next month, so I'm going to try to visit both.

Our former chair at Fordham had a strong aversion to the PGR, and (at least according to my memory of a conversation I had with one faculty member) we have in the past, for that reason, not consented to be ranked. Caveat, I haven't run this down to apodictic certainty. One treads lightly in such things...

You're not alone. This is normal to feel terrible and disoriented now. It is OK to get help. In fact I encourage you to get very well socially connected, either with your friends or your family or faith community or sign up for short term therapy. (Counseling services on your campus might be available for free)

I've struggled a lot to get work done over the past month. My ability to concentrate, my sleep etc. have been absolutely terrrible. I'm sure this is true for a lot of people going through this process. It feels like there's so much at stake. Basically, I think it's normal but seeing a professional and talk about it might still be helpful.

I will second @Rose-Colored Beetle's first comment here (not so sure about the second one regarding the analytic-continental distinction) but it sounds like Fordham could be an option for you. We have a world-famous Nietzsche scholar here who also does work on Heidegger and Gadamer. We also have a number of colleagues interested in Foucault, Deleuze/Guattari, Marx, and others--it seems like Fordham is trying to bring in more people interested in political philosophy and ethics (looking at my own cohort as an example) . We've recently made some great ethics hires to strengthen our department's ethics base too. One last thing I'll say about Fordham: We have a Social and Political Group that meets pretty regularly every semester that brings in guests from all over.

My second cycle, had my fair share of rejections - honestly, I really don't care about them. If I get rejected, I was rejected. Not much more to think about.

Nixed by Northwestern, shunned by Chicago, rebuffed by Rice, banished by Berkeley, forsaken by Fordham.

I also had an obsession with washing dishes during admissions season. It was a mindless but productive task that kept me from refreshing my email/the results page 600x!

Washing the dishes has become therapeutic because I actually accomplish something ?

If we're doing music for trying times, you guys might enjoy this bit of existential wobble from the Kit Fine Ensemble, featuring some serious disciplinary shade:
Phi-lo-so-ophy
It's not for me!
I don't have what it takes,
I'm not one of the greats...
So I'll practice law,
Make money galore!
Make money, make money,
And thi-i-ink no more. ?

And which ends with the heartwarming message of 'be yourself!'
Which I think is good to keep in mind during application season when everyone's a little worried about how they're presenting themselves. :)

soproperlybasic got a reaction from Marcus_Aurelius in 3.7 GPA or lower acceptances
I graduated with a 3.6 (although my philosophy GPA was closer to a 3.8, I was a double major) and I now attend Fordham (which isn't ranked, but is still a well-known program). UNC also kept me in the running until pretty much the last moment, so it can be done.
