This. I was on the waitlist at a very prestigious graduate program last year (top 10), but I was rejected from all of the top 25 and beyond programs I applied to. It's very random.

I was asked to describe my current research. That was the easy part. The difficult question was: "Why political science?".
I was not expecting that question. Isn't it obvious why I'm applying to graduate school in political science and not, for example, anthropology?

Michigan, Ohio State, and Minnesota come to mind...

I presented at MPSA in April. I was still an undergraduate at that point. Undergraduates are only allowed to do poster, not oral, presentations. It was a fine experience, though, and I'd recommend it to anyone. I found that many well-known academics do peruse the posters, which is nice.

I've heard that understanding R might be helpful.

I took the GRE three times. I received a 4.5 on the AW section the first two attempts. On the second, I received a perfect 6. If you can demonstrate through your SOP and writing sample that you are able to write really well, then I wouldn't worry about retaking it.

To the person who posted on the results page a rejection from University of Minnesota, don't give up hope yet. I looked at previous years' results, and it seems like acceptances are sent out over the course of three days.

I have said this before (I believe yesterday) and I will say it again. Per the graduate secretary at Indiana, acceptances will hopefully go out next week. I was told this on Monday. At that point, decisions were still being made.

Yeah, I would also only recommend doing this if you've corresponded with him or her before.

I'm from Michigan, and although Ann Arbor is a moderately expensive city, I think $20,000+ would be sufficient.

Are you asking about US political science programs or Canadian economics programs? If the former, then a 161 on the quant section will certainly not disqualify you.

The email I received from UNC today taught me to take everything on GradCafe with a grain of salt. It really is just a waiting game. I suppose you aren't done until you've officially been rejected.

I've just been waitlisted at UNC-Chapel Hill. They accept students off the waitlist every year, according to the professor who emailed me.
