PokePsych got a reaction from EileanDonan in Interview Tips!
Some things I saw people do that gave of bad vibes:
- Not talk with anybody (creep vibes) or only talk with people who are in their prospective lab. We are ALL going to give feedback on you as grad students if we can. NEVER say things like oh 'I don't want to talk with X/X's prospectives/X's grad student because I'm not going to go to their lab anyway' - that is just rude). It doesn't mean that you have to talk with EVERY person in the room, but try to just talk with people and just ask where they're from and what their research is about. Probably ask what they like about their current school and what the school could do better.
- Generally don't say things as oh I don't have an research questions, I just like analyzing data or things like that. Know what you want to do - even if it's just a broad topic that you feel comfortable talking about. Like what are you interested in?
- Try to avoid making negative comments about your current institute. It's fine to ask about work-life balance and mentoring style. But don't frame ti as 'is PI easily available, because my current one is never there'.

PokePsych got a reaction from xChrisx in Venting Thread- Vent about anything.
You may want to bring this up to somebody else (either confidentially, such as an ombudsperson; or someone like the dean of grad students, your own advisor, etc.) - not necessarily his advisor. Nobody has the right to yell and intimidate you like that, regardless of the situation.

at my interviews a lot of people were carrying backpacks. I wouldn't stress it too much.

It's fine. If people start acting like that, it's not a program you want to. You're an adult, you should be allowed to set boundaries in that regard.

Usually you either have an open bar or get like one or two drink coupons.

I know one PI at my undergrad institute who decided between two candidates with a coin flip. Sometimes it's literally that (including a mental coin flip)

anyone in social psych who tells you the number of publications matters.. well. 5 papers in Journal of Happiness Studies still doesnt weigh up to one publication in JPSP (for social psych).

PokePsych got a reaction from Adelaide9216 in Paper in review - no news from reviewers/journal
email - and probably some reviewer was late or something. It's fine to inquiry particularly if they have given you a time.

Columbia U (in NY) has already sent out its invites a while back.

PokePsych got a reaction from xxxxxxxxxx in Struggling with Cohort
Not every cohort has these social vibes. I have some awesome RAs that I have coffee/lunch with, some people in different years, including post docs, in other labs (not in my cohort). I don't think you have to limit yourself to your cohort - or even your department for that matter.

I think this depends on the field too. SPSP (social psychology) recently did a review of this. It also really matters WHICH journal you publish in. Then there's the whole thing does your line of work fit with the department (as does your teaching statement, diversity statemetn, etc.), coherence, etc.

I think before deciding on clinical/developmental. Do you want to be a clinician? If yes, know that this is the hardesr area to get accepted in and not a certainty. You would probably need a lot more than a masters for that area.
Be certain about the questions you like to answer (i.e. research interest), including theoretical approaches. This will probably require a lot of reading, but I would definitely work that out before committing to anything

What your current mentor says. Academics should know how to navigate this a ton better than people on an online forum.

PokePsych got a reaction from psychhealth101 in Interview Advice
I think the thesis/disseration question is partly a gauge of fit, an understanding of that you know what research is about and whether you have reasonable expectations. Don't mind it that much because it's not like you ACTUALLY have to do that project.
Be yourself also because you want to work with someone who likes YOU for who you are. Fit goes both ways.

PokePsych got a reaction from psychhealth101 in Interview Advice
> Be professional and prepared. Don't make inappropriate jokes, don't discuss things like politics (particularly if you are very conservative, psych is a liberal stronghold...), don't act sexist (the last two I've seen happen). Dress the part, but don't worry about it too much, you will not be judged on your outfit unless it is very misplaced.
> Be prepared to talk about the topics you are interested in, maybe a recent paper that came out, your work style, your strengths, etc.
>Obviously read some things about the PIs research, but also see what his/her grad students are doing. You will probably spend quite some time with grad students and they can also make or break you (if they really dislike you) - and may be your future collaborators. It doesn't mean you have to be super extrovert, but do take time for people during lunch break etc.
> Although you want to let the school know you are interested in them, no need to be tooooooo enchanted
> Do not talk bad about other people/schools, this is unprofessional.
Also make sure you have questions to ask; what do you want to know about the school? PI (work style etc.)? It is also a way for you to show that you understand what graduate school is about. It is as much an opportunity for you to interview them as it is for them to interview you
