Just found out I got an interview at Maryland!! Woohoo! 

Hey! I submitted Jan 2 (really close to the deadline lol) and heard today. I was invited to interview.

Anyone heard from South Carolina? They were my earliest deadline (Dec 1) and not a word!! 

So I actually almost applied to Emory and ran into this same issue. They do have different requirements for their letters, don't they? I scheduled a time to speak with the program director and kinda gave her an elevator pitch of the things I have been involved in. From our quick conversation she was able to identify someone else that would be a suitable reference and was going to make a note in my file. I didn't end up applying there for other reasons, but don't let that requirement deter you if you are really interested! Most schools would be willing to work with you on that sort of thing. Who wants to be a cookie cutter applicant, anyway?? good luck!

Yeah, I never wrote over because of an experience from school. I took a class with a friend and we had a paper that was supposed to be 1 page double spaced on a in-depth topic where it was hard to stick to this limit (just like our statements!). My friend submit two pages for this project (she was enthusiastic about the subject and thought that would show in the paper). The professor wasn't too pleased with this, took her aside and told her the page limits weren't a "suggestion", that they were in place for a reason due to her time constraints and it showed a lack of respect to not follow them. The teacher only graded the first page and my friend only received like a 50% on it. 
Soo ever since then, I've always followed to a T because I can understand there are limits for a reason and was terrified that the overage would not be looked at/not graded, or my paper would be thrown out entirely for a clear lack of ability to follow directions (such as job applicants that will throw out entire applicants because you submitted a 2 page resume when they specifically asked for 1 page). 
All my statements that I submitted were almost exactly 500 words or 750 or whatever the limit was because I wrote what I wanted and then slowly went through and edited down as needed. 

Not sue why this posted early without my writing but I stuck to the exact word count if they gave a word count.
In my mind I think they set specific counts for a reason and know that people can write it in the amount given. I spent a lot of time editing all of my personal statements and had various others look over them, in all honesty there is probably some information/wording that can be changed to be more concise. 
Also I think if it is a noticeable difference in length compared to other applicants it can look like you just copied and pasted another schools statement and can be seen as a failure to follow directions. However, that is just me. I know there's talk on if its acceptable or not for personal statements in general, but I'd rather be safe than sorry!
 
 

I mostly stuck to the exact word count. Some of mine were over by like ~5-10 words, but I did my best to stick to their exact word count. Some applications I had to type it right in their box so there was no way for me to go over their limit. 

Nebraska does have a program director! Article needs an update.
