My recommendation would be to straight up ask LeMon or Strawn about job placement. As for Newsom, Yeah...she's retiring this year, which is why I'm headed elsewhere (DSS is my main interest). LeMon and Strawn are definitely known for their iconography research, but they’re both doing interesting research outside that area. Personally, I also think Jacob Wright is brilliant. Where are your interests in HB?
I will definitely ask Strawn about this. Thanks for your insightful input! I have been working on the Pentateuch mostly, but I am ready to explore more topics as time progresses. Have you decided which school to attend?

Unless you get some sort of extra fellowship money, surviving in NYC on their stipend is difficult. I know two PhD grads from NYU in another discipline in the humanities who left during the summers because of funding issues (they would sublet their rooms). Perhaps the department of interest has extra funds set aside for the summer?
Thank you, sacklunch! NYU has graciously offered me a summer stipend but only for three years . . . I am not sure whether a summer funding would help me much survive in NYC, tho. I have actually considered Brandeis as my top choice because of "fit" between my research interests and those of professors there. But, at the same time, I can agree with Kuriakos that "fit" and POI are not everything. The name or reputation often plays an important role in getting a job. I think Brandeis is certainly a top-tier program to study HB, but I become "uncertain" when it comes to a comparison with its peer institutions like Emory or JHU. Would you also prioritize "fit" over "name," or vice versa?

I can answer questions about Emory! It's a fabulous program. Joel LeMon, Brent Strawn and Jacob Wright are all amazing and they really invest in their students. Several of my fellow alumni have remarked that other doctoral programs don’t quite compare in terms of practical prep and investment.
Thank you so much, Rivkah! That’s really helpful! I have heard Strawn and LeMon have done some wonderful research on ANE iconography, but I have also heard that Newsom will retire very soon. I have been trying to find some information about job placement from Emory but could not find it. Would you mind sharing some recent placement record with me? Once again, thank you!

Congratulations! That's a good program and I know that you were really gunning for it!
Thank you so much, Almaqah! I feel so grateful for this opportunity. I am still weighing my options—Brandeis, Emory, NYU. Could you offer me some insights on my decision-making?

Just a heads up, Brandeis decisions are out. Accepted to their Bible and ANE program!

Anyone want to claim the UCLA NELC acceptance?
I think I can claim it at the behest of my peer from our department. He has not make any decision yet. I will let you know when he decides (of course, I will ask for his permission).

Now I am really wading in over my head! But . . .
I could speculate a top 6 and second 6 for HB and NELC might look something like:
Top group:
-
University of Chicago
-
Harvard
-
Yale
-
Brandeis
-
Johns Hopkins
-
NYU
Second group:
-
Duke (PhD)
-
PTSEM
-
Berkeley
-
UT Austin
-
Brown
-
UCLA (or Cornell, Vanderbilt, Boston College, Michigan, Toronto, Emory, etc.)
Here is a link to placement results for NYU in this area: http://as.nyu.edu/hebrewjudaic/graduate/phd-placement.html
Thanks, tankis9! Your insights are most appreciated!

I am also genuinely interested in seeing the list for Hebrew Bible (perhaps with a focus on NELC or Semitics)!

When I applied to Brandeis two years ago, I got moved to the MA program. It showed up on their website a day or so before I got the notification. You can tell if they've done this to you by logging on the website and seeing if the application title reads MA instead of PhD. When they move your application over, it's a process and not everything updates at once.
(Also, Brandei's MA is quite expensive, even with financial aid. I'd recommend looking elsewhere if you do get demoted)
Thank you so much for your reply, Almaqah! I have literally been checking my application website every hour, but whether fortunately or unfortunately I don't see any change yet. I guess I feel a bit relieved for not being rejected yet. Have you also applied to Brandeis this year? Btw, congratulations on your acceptance to UT-Austin. It is really an excellent program!

Hello everyone!
I am so glad to find this discussion thread!
I have recently seen two rejection posts from Brandeis. I am wondering if they have already extended offers or interview invitations? Since I have not heard any word from them, I do not know how to interpret this...
Thanks in advance for your help!

Almaqah Thwn,
My primary interests lie in Pentateuchal criticism. Since I am a big fan of documentary hypothesis, Chicago and Brandeis are my top choices (of course, yale too).

Welp, I remember three years ago when I thought I'd get into a PhD program and wouldn't have to go through this long process again. Now, it's the third round of PhD applications. For you newcomers, the moral of the story is: Be prepared to invest a few years, even though its possible you may get in the first. Also, apply to a lot of different schools if you have the time and resources. That being said, doing the applications this go around is not nearly as painstaking and I feel much more confident in my skills and will be in a much better position academically than if I had gotten accepted to my top choice two years ago (which almost happened).
All that aside, I'm PhD applicant in Hebrew Bible, focusing on comparative ancient Near Eastern studies and gender and sexuality. I'll be seeing all of you frequently here within the next few months. But in the meantime, good luck on your applications and getting in touch with professors!
Also, for those of you applying to Emory: How does placement look in your field? I was interested in the Hebrew Bible department, but their placement for that field did not seem to be too high (although, I could just be mistaken).
I am also applying to Emory for HB this application cycle. A friend of mine currently studying MTS in HB at Emory told me that the recent placement for PhD graduates has been somewhat bad contrary to what it used to be in the past. But I think this phenomenon is not restricted solely to Emory but applicable to every school (perhaps certain exceptions to Ivies/top-tier programs) due to a competitive job market for humanities PhDs. Even though Newsom is near retirement, I think Emory still remains strong with Wright, Strawn, and Gilders.
If you don't mind me asking, what schools are you currently looking at? I am interested in applying to Brandeis, Chicago, Emory, and Notre Dame. Best of luck to your application this year!

Your advice was very insightful. It really helped me rethink my decision. Thank you so much!
