I completely appreciate the sentiment behind it, and do understand your points. But people can accidentally come across as a little condescending - I suppose in a jokey way, I’m just asking people to bear that in mind when they post, to avoid sounding that way!

I totally totally get that, and it definitely is presumptuous. I think the supportive message more geared toward those having obvious panic attacks hahaha. Either way considering I haven't gotten any acceptances yet, I can empathize with the feelings of condescension and convenience.

I didn’t even get waitlisted at CUNY. Even though I said I wouldn’t go there without finding at the interview, it feels bad to be rejected.

I'm sorry to hear that, its really cruel they'd make you interview and still reject you. I'd hope that they'd treat their applicants better, considering how much is on the line for them.

Hey folks, it's really sweet that people are reminding everyone that we are worth more than our admissions ... it would probably be sweeter if it wasn't coming from people with those coveted admission spots already, who have the luxury of not being in that position :P

I totally feel that. While I don't have any acceptances yet, I think its the best way to be considerate of all other applicants on this forum. I think its better than gloating about acceptances and not acknowledging the fact that so many people who didn't receive those had just as much stake in it.

  3. CUNY just sent me an email and put me on the waitlist. They also invited me to the open house next week, which I will be attending. I have a full-time job and two open houses next week (Boston & NYC) so trying to make this work will be hard. Either way, kind of disappointed but better than a rejection! If any admits know they're not going, please let them know because CUNY is my dream school :D

Congrats on all the acceptances guys and keep your head up. Regardless of what happens we'll all emerge from this hell stronger, and we'll be exactly where were supposed to be. Much love

In the email requesting the the interview (received January 25) they said: "I also wanted to alert you to an open house at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan on Tuesday, February 13th.  That's an event where prospective students come and meet us.  It is open to both admitted and waitlisted applicants and we hope that you can join us then."  Despite this language I have received no notice of if I'm admitted, accepted, or rejected.

In my pretty short and informal interview on the 29th they also said that there was no funding was available to help anyone come visit, and they wouldn't make final decisions for another week or two. That's all the info I have. I won't be going to the visit day since it would be pretty expensive to fly from the midwest.

Hey thanks for the response, hate how ambiguous they are. Regardless I hope you hear some good news, I know CUNY has a hard time getting decent funding.

  5. Happy Monday all, congratulations to everyone who heard news!!!! Nothing on my end.

For those who heard from the CUNY Graduate Center, do you have any news of the open house thats coming up? I thought I had a great chance to get in, including working as an RA for a big faculty member for about a year and taking classes there, but I haven't heard anything. The faculty member called me today checking up on me, but I had no news to report. He said they must still be deliberating.

Is the open house for the sociology program combined with the interviews?

I'm actually not sure -- they didn't mention interviews at all and framed it as 'giving us a chance to make a better informed decision once admittances are released', but I have a feeling informal interviews will be happening a lot.

  7. The interview is an open house from Feb 11th to the 13th. I was told they invited the short list of 16 candidates, and they would probably only accept 8-12. But im really not sure, its possible a lot of people wont accept and more acceptances will come out towards March. It happens. I wouldnt assume anything till you see it in writing!

  8. I got a phone call from an unknown number today, and thinking it was a school I almost freaked out. Turns out it was my student loan officer reminding me I was past due, to which I vaguely tried to explain I was trying to get into a Ph.D program so I could defer the loan.

I just wanted to shoot everybody some love on here. PLEASE remember how arbitrary these decisions are; I almost didn't apply because frankly it all seems elitist to me. At the end of the day, we are all so much more than what we are on paper--and applications are limited amounts of paper anyway! I hope everybody here gets into ONE awesome program, or gets ONE awesome dream job--just don't give up hope and remember that this stuff is not indicative of your worth.

also thank you <3 you are absolutely right and its important to constantly remind yourself of this fact, considering we all put so much stake and meaning into these apps.

Not liking the sound that... even though the first full of week is when most schools finish up their rejections & acceptances. I was out by the end of February when I first applied in 2014.

Ouch, yeah I have a feeling next week is going to be very tumultuous.

On top of my Madison rejection, my Utah application may not be considered for funding because they're showing that they haven't gotten my GRE scores yet, and my gatekeeper in the field for my thesis work just recused themselves from being a gatekeeper, and i'm supposed to defend my thesis in 2 months. It's been a day.

Wow that is a day, im sorry :( and I agree with madelene haha

Hey Guys! First time writing in the Forum! (Thanks for creating this place to vent out all the stress!) I was reading that people are calling universities. Should I also start calling? I applied to CUNY, NYU, Princeton, Cornell and Brown. Is it too desperate?  (Even if I am quite desperate for some news). Congrats to all that have been accepted!

Hey! Honestly I think calling is more of a self-soothing gesture haha. And I wouldnt worry about coming off too desperate Im sure they get a million calls a day from applicants.

Y'all are gonna kill it! If anyone wants to have a group Skype and vent or just chat about non-Soc things, let me know! I want to know all of you!

I'd totally be down for that, weekend would be best! My skype is live:kevinjunha.

I still haven't heard anything from anywhere, save for the one UT rejection...I know it's still early but I feel like if I still had a chance I would've heard from somewhere by now, so I've sort of resigned myself that perhaps a PhD is not in the cards for me (I don't plan on applying next year)

Oh man come on guys its the first day of February don't resign yourselves yet!!!!
