I've been occasionally on this board for the last 6-7 years, especially when I was applying for admission to graduate programs. I just finished my PhD in Spanish linguistics. This last year I, at times, thought that the University of California was going to crush the soul out of me, jejeje, but it did not quite achieve that. I wish everybody well, however and wherever you find yourselves. And congratulations to the people who found a grad school slot.

Dont know the answer to your question.
But since when "30" is classified as "old"?!

I am certain you will like Lincoln. My brother went to school there. He liked it. Besides, I have always read positive things about Lincoln and Omaha, which are very close. I did some research about the place as well. They fanatically vote for ultra-conservative politicians and government, with very few exceptions. HOWEVER, the general attitude is not the stereotypical Republican mindset at all. For example, 73% of the electorate in Nebraska approve of same-sex marriage in a professional survey around 2015 or so . And that is as high as in Massachusetts, which introduced the "the issue" to this country as Canada, Spain and others were doing it (same year). I visited rural Nebraska about four or five years back and I found it politically conservative, but with friendly people in general. Returning to my premise: cities are generally different and significantly more liberal and open-minded than rural areas or small towns. I did not find anything particularly worrisome (for me) about Lincoln and the University when I was heavily researching them. And Amtrack (train) connects both Lincoln and Omaha easily. Public transportation is one of the most important issues for me. (I told you I did a lot of reading.)

I JUST GOT ACCEPTED TO BOSTON COLLEGE! I'm crying so hard. I'm so thankful and in disbelief, I've been shaking since I got the email. I'll be emailing shortly to take myself off of the UConn waitlist and I hope this helps someone else out. Thank you all so much for your kind words and support through this whole process. It's especially wonderful because yesterday marked one year since my dad passed away, and I can't help but feel he's looking out for me.

I'll be headed to Nebraska-Lincoln, but I am extremely worried about how conservative the state is.
Bloomington is a nice little progressive town in a sea of conservatism, and Indianapolis is close if you ever need a big-city getaway.

Hope you hear back about the funding from UIC soon!

Hate to be that person who only posts good things, but I'm excited to share that I got accepted into English MA programs at Boston U and Villanova! After having no hope for this cycle, these last minute acceptances have been so pleasant and unexpected. To all those still waiting, hang in there!!

They really shouldn't be pressuring you to make a decision before April 15th.

Unless you are independently wealthy, do not do that. You will absolutely be a second-class citizen in the department, and you will never be a professor's first choice to help with their research. In offering you admission to the MA program rather than the PhD, faculty members in the department have clearly stated that already. It would actually make more sense to go to UW Madison, gain some teaching experience, and master out after two years while applying for other PhD programs during year 2.

So McGill has now offered funding! I'm pretty torn between Nebraska and McGill now...but I love having a choice to make when I had convinced myself I wouldn't get any offers WITH funding.

Felicidades. Lincoln es una buena ciudad para vivir.

Anyone have any updates? Anyone have strategies they use to prevent themselves from obsessing over checking grad cafe and the email??
I am considering putting on a rubber band and snapping it when I want to check both. My fear is that knowing myself, I'll snap the rubber band more than 10 times in one day.
I hope the process is going well for everyone. Congrats to those accepted. To those waiting, may we hear good news soon.

I hope you'll get off of the waitlist!!! Best of lucks!

In between losing and gaining hope?
My top school has waitlisted me. I am trying to remain positive as it’s still early and I am hoping that maybe someone will reject their offer but we all know how waiting list works ?
I am trying to remain positive because what is for me, will be for me. And everything will work out in the end whether or not it’s the plan I originally envisioned.
    Thank you for asking

i got the email while I was at my nanny job and started crying and shaking. I told my child I was happy because I was going to be a teacher and she hugged me said “I hope you will be mine next year!” Cue more tears.

I'm sending everyone good vibes - I just had an amazing phone call with the DGS at the Minnesota Writing Studies program who offered me admission! I was staring down a shut out, pending waitlist movement, but now I got into my top program. It's possible, y'all! Every single person here is a great academic and can make it happen!
