Sooo I just got a call from OSU!! I was so happy when I saw a call coming from Ohio lol. Let me know if any of you are also going down there for an interview, and maybe we can PM about it. I'm still in a state of shock!

Not me I wish though!! Last year they seemed to have started on 12/16 so I've been staring at my phone. February seems so far away /:
Results tab at the top of this page, and you can just search for genetic counseling

Happy Dec 15 to those applying to programs with due dates today! 5 apps down for me, still a good handful to go. My bank account is starting to feel it -- thank goodness for extra hours at work! And shout out to those of you who had all your applications submitted like, last month lol. I salute you! I'll just keep telling myself that the later I wait to submit my applications, the less time I will have to stress until I hear back from the schools haha. Good luck everyone, and here's to staying motivated and sane!

I basically obsessed over these to try to understand what qualities an ideal applicant should have! It was so painful reading page after page of uber qualified people who have double PhDs and basically shadowed a genetic counselor their whole life while maintaining a 5.0 and were crisis counselors at 4 different clinics hahah
However, as many people have told me, they are usually fluffed up. I know it's human nature to compare ourselves and because we have not been accepted yet, it's easy to point out lacking qualities in our applications. We all know and have what it takes to get into these programs - it's all a matter of good timing/appropriate mix of qualities and experiences/dedication/luck along with other variables!
The first application deadlines are coming up along with the rest of them coming soon afterword, so let's all put our best foot forward and crank those apps out!!

Does anyone else read accepted student bios and feel really unaccomplished? I was just reading the bios for Northwestern students and this one student had even competed in the olympics. Like at that point I just wanted to give up loll

According to data from 2010, 31.5% were accepted (230/731 unique applicants). But I feel like it's probably more competitive now, because more people are aware of the field. I remember at Wayne state's open house the director was saying we were the biggest group they'd ever had! There have been a couple more programs added though so maybe it's been balanced out

Looks like a great program! But I went through the FAQs and it looks like they don't offer scholarships, clinicals are offsite, and the personal statement can be max 500 words which doesn't even seem possible for me at this point so I'm going to pass on applying there which means you have 1 less competitor lol. Although it doesn't look like we're applying to any of the same schools anyways, but i was interested in Arizona. Thanks for putting the website here!

In Sarah Lawrence's webinar they said it was used so they can see how they compare to the other schools you are applying to like if you are looking at all small schools or all schools that have rotations in the first year etc. This may differ from program to program though.

I interviewed a couple of places last year and they just used the list to sort of gauge where they ranked in your mind compared to the others you listed. But I don't think it's required at all. Probably not as necessary this year with the match

Nope, not required in the slightest. I'm not sure entirely what they use it for, other than to gauge how they stand versus other schools? But feel free to leave blank, shouldn't affect you one way or the other.

You seem to have great experience going for you! Your gpa is lower than the average accepted student (3.5) but if you've shown improvement and done well in the pre-reqs you should be fine. Also if you do good on the GRE it should help! Being able to shadow a GC for a whole month will look really good especially if they agree to write a recommendation as well. However, you're not allowed to send recommendations yourself they must be submitted directly to the programs. I'm a first time applicant so I can't give you much advice bc I'm struggling myself lol but your wealth of experience really stands out to me

When I went to Wayne state's open house I asked one of the current students how important it was to have a great score. This was before I took the GRE and i was pretty concerned about the math section. The student said that it didn't play a huge role at Wayne and their math score hadn't been that good (however they had also been waitlisted and ended up getting in after someone dropped the spot soo...)
I think that experience is the most important thing to these schools. I feel like gpa and gre matter but they really want people who have taken a couple years to work in the field (this is what I picked up from reading student bios and talking to current students). Anyways I could be wrong but if you have a lot of experience to make up for the not so good score I think you'll be fine!
