Good luck to the incoming applicants!
GradCafe has become a little under utilized since the making of a discord. If you'd like to join other future applicants and current students in discord please do!

Apparently, I can't copy and paste correctly... below is the link to the first part (episode #87). But #97 is the episode more relevant to you anyways!

For those who are waiting to hear back with interview invitations, I recorded a podcast episode with a 3 fellow first-year GC students (all who I met through Grad Cafe!). We all matched with programs and have a semester under our belts, so we wanted to share some tips. In this episode, we talk about our personal experiences during the interviews, preparation strategies, ranking schools, the match system and much more! We created this episode for you guys to have a better sense of the application process. This is a follow-up episode to us talking about how to gather experience and complete a competitive application (episode #87), but I imagine most people in this group have already done that. Both are linked below though.

We all wish we had a resource like this when we were in your shoes. Hopefully y'all find this helpful and please feel free to reach out with questions or comments (info@DNApodcast.com)! We love hearing from other future genetic counselors

I'm not sure about in the U.K., but Canadian and American degrees are equivalent and you can work in either Canada or the US if you attend an accredited school.

https://www.abgc.net/becoming-certified/recognized-accrediting-bodies/
This page discusses internationally trained genetic counselors. Looks like you'd just need to double check that any international program you apply to are recognized as an Accrediting Body through ABGC if you want to practice in the US.

Hey everyone! Feel free to ask me any questions! I know how stressful the application cycle and interviews could be.

I think they play a big role. I had a major GPA of 2.68 when I applied last cycle (and didn’t get in). I did poorly in ochem and Biochem as well. To offset that, I took a neurogenetics class through cincinnati and I retook Biochem this cycle (got an A, better than my previous C).
Factoring just Biochem in, it raises my gpa to a 2.77 I believe. My overall GPA is only decent at 3.36 (last 60 units around a 3.8 though). But I do believe retaking the course showed initiative and that I still have that upward momentum I ended college with. But prerequisite grades can be offsetted with many things as long as you have at least a C in them. I think my experience helped do that more so than retaking Biochem did.
So you can get accepted with around what you posted, just make sure you have something that makes you stand out or shows that you can do upper level science classes. Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions!

gene13 reacted to GeneDxGCA in Genetic Counseling Fall 2019 Applicants
Hi all,
I applied for the current cycle and am waiting to hear back on Match Day, but I wanted to mention an opportunity for all the future GC applicants on this forum. As you can probably tell from my username, I am a GCA at GeneDx. My company is hosting a Prospective GC Day on April 27th 2018. From what I've heard, the lineup will include talks by Quinn Stein and Shannan Dixon (program directors at Augustana and Maryland, respectively). In addition, there will be panels discussing different positions genetic counselors hold and the unique journeys many have undertaken to become genetic counselors. For those in the Maryland area, you can visit in-person and tour the lab before hearing the speakers. If you can only log-in remotely, you can access the talks via video conference. Feel free to get more information by visiting genedx.com and RSVPing to the host (Meg). Her email address is listed on the website, I just didn't feel comfortable putting it on blast on this forum lol. The program will run from 9am-2:30pm.
I don't know that I will be checking this forum all that frequently, but if you have further questions, I will try my best to reply!
Thanks!

Final reminder:
If you'd like to fill out the following survey, please do so by tomorrow night! After which, I will not be accepting submissions. If you are interested in seeing the current results, submit a BLANK form. It will give you the option to see the results at the end. I've received about 80 responses so far, so there is a good amount of data to look at.
