  1. Do any of you have CHES/MCHES or CPH certifcations? Should I bother getting these to make my app more competitive for next year since I have minimal research experience? Have any of you that have been accepted had minimal research experience? Does anyone know of programs that don't require an extensive list of publications/research experience? I applied to 1 program back in 2017, got an interview, but did not get accepted (They only accepted 1 student). They wanted me to apply the following year, but unfortunately, I was not able to. Unfortunately I got laid off due to covid, unable to find a remote job (I now have a 1 yr old), so I really want to take this time to strengthen my application, reach out to faculty early, and just make sure I'm doing everything I can to increase my chances of acceptance. I'll also be applying to multiple schools this time around.
  2. THats so exciting!!! Congrats!! I wanted to apply for their phd, but applied for the MHS instead at the recommendation of one of their faculty. I am hoping that I get considered for the phd, since I made it clear it was my goal.
  3. We have pretty similar backgrounds/circumstances and intersts in MCH. THose are pretty much the schools i've been looking at for future mch phd applications. Have you heard back from any of your applications? I didn't apply to any phd/drph programs, but I did apply for MHS (online) in MCH at Hopkins and MCH certificate at Drexel. I've been having trouble getting LOR from faculty at my MPH school (very small instate program), no one is answering my emails (a few ppl i know haven't heard back from faculty they've reached out to either, so it's not jsut me). This is one of the reasons why I am not applying this cycle, which really really sucks. Another quick question, What made you apply to Rutgers? I live less than an hour from rutgers and have considered, but just don't know enough about the school/ program when it comes to MCH. Thanks!
  4. This exactly!!!! This might be my second year applying... If anyone ever gets back to me. Even with great fit, it truly is just dumb luck.
  5. I emailed one back in may and she got back to me and we had a phone call. Our interests were identical and she was even astonish at the similarities. I reached out again a month ago and she hasn't replied. I just sent another email. Since our last chat, I spoke to students and the program director, to make sure it was a right fit overall. Now I can't get a hold of her. It's the only school I need GREs for and if she's not getting back to me, I don't wanna take my GRE and waste my money. I emailed 3 others and no one has gotten back to me. One of them I've worked on research with about 2-3 yrs ago, and the other one I had spoken to last year-again very similar interests and she was even doing research on a similar topic I had done my research project for mph on. I should mention, I'm looking to apply to public health, health psychology, and demography programs. Unfortunately demography might have to wait until next year because just found out that they are not accepting applications this cycle. I'm feeling very discouraged and thinking I should wait until next year to apply.
  6. Has anyone had any luck with initial emails to POIs?
  7. One form for all of them. Make sure you let them know that you'll be applying to multiple programs and not one specific program( you don't want them to mention a specific program).
  8. Have you tried LinkedIn?? They have awesome advice on there. I wouldn't add any non public/ health-care experience prior to mph. Make sure it's all Relevant.
  9. Thanks! Unfortunately I am very very very limited in programs that I can apply to. I have a 7 month old baby, just bought a house right before the pandemic hit, and my husband plans on going back to school for occupational therapy. I live outside of Philadelphia, so programs have to be within 2 hrs driving distance. One of the program coordinators ive been chatting with gave me this piece of advice: One of the most critical components of the PhD application is the applicant "fit" with a faculty member who has a shared research content expertise. I strongly encourage you to research our faculty and be sure that we have someone who is actively conducting research in the area that you want to concentrate in. It is important to have the support - and even a letter of recommendation - from this faculty member as part of the application. I am happy to discuss! With her suggestion of getting a letter of recommendation from this faculty, I wasn't sure if maybe I would need to reach out more often, and how to go about this. I also have to ask for clarification on whether the faculty's letter of recommendation would be one out of the three needed or just an extra one. Is anyone planning on taking GREs? I have to retake mine, but last I checked, they were doing it remote from home. My windows computer is not reliable at all and not sure how itll work.
  10. I see a lot of science (biology/chemistry/physics/etc...) post online of a typical day for a first year phd student, but can't seem to find what it's like for those in public health/social sciences. Does anyone want to share what their first semester/year as a new phd student was or has been like. Of course it will vary depending on the school, but just general idea would be great. Thanks!!
  11. Hey all, i'm thinking of applying this cycle to BH programs. I was just wondering how you are all going about reaching out to faculty during these times. I spoke to a great match back in May, but not sure how to follow-up and reach out again to let her know I'm still interested. what do I say exactly? do I jsut strike up a random convo on how her reseaerch is doing? not sure how to go about this. Any advice? I have an MPH and my background is in diabetes in underserved populations.
  12. We both haven't heard from University of Maryland yet.... Very frustrating. Tried emailing and nothing.

    Cv/resume question

I will be giving a talk about diabetes on a local radio station, how can I included that in my CV? Should I even include it? FYI: I work on the public health field. I just graduated with my mph and looking to apply to doctoral programs as well.
  14. Yes... Tell me about it. We're both going crazy (we're both waiting to hear from the same program). I emailed once since my interview asking for an update and did not get a reply. If it's a no...just say so, why drag it out. On a different note, how do you guys feel about applying to a new PhD program? It's not necessarily ceph accredited, but from my understanding, when it comes to PhD, it really doesn't matter (specially since my mph is ceph). And this isn't one of those online school or for-profit... A legit University.
  15. Anyone still waiting for a yes, no, wait-list? Still waiting to hear something after my interview March 22. ? it's driving me nuts!!
  16. Thank you. Yea, i have 8+ years of working in health care and 2/8 have been as a project coordinator in community health, so it seems as though I'd have to wait a few more years to apply for that program. They were my dream school for years, until I did a campus tour and met with a handful of faculty for their PhD program... I couldn't get a feel of what they wanted, but it sure as heck seemed like it wasn't me. Granted, that was a different department than the Drph, but still. Did you have any contact with that department or any faculty? Have you asked them why you were denied?
  17. And @TFPubHealth Do you know if they offer funding for those applying for the spring semester? I'm interested in applying but don't know if I should just wait until next year. Also, anyone applying to usf's drph.... How many years of experience do you have ? Is there funding? Feel feel to PM with any info. Thanks!
  18. Have you tried reaching out to some of the students at each institution? Or maybe some alumni? What were your reasons for applying to those schools? Based on that, make a pros and cons list. If you're able to, go on campus and try to get a feel for the school. When I started thinking about applying to PhD programs, I really wanted to attend University of South Florida. That was my dream school. I flew to Florida and attended a campus tour and met with a bunch of faculty one on one and at the end of a very exhausting day, I realized I was not a good fit at that school, no matter how hard I tried looking for something. The school is great and all, but I just didn't click with the faculty. That's something to keep in mind. Which one seems to be the one that'll get you to your overall goal.
  19. Thanks!! Reading this surprisingly made me feel a little better :-) I really hope no news is good news.
  20. Had my interview the 22nd of March. They said I would hear back by the following week. (I would say by March 31). It'll be two weeks tomorrow since my interview and I haven't heard anything :-( Going nuts.
  21. It's been a week now since my interview and I have heard aboslutely nothing from them. Going nuts over here!
