AllieKat reacted to Daenerys in Yoo-hoo! Schools to which I applied? Could one of you PLEASE just admit or reject me now ? Love, the Invisible Applicant
I applied to six schools.  My applications are all complete.  The portals all state that my applications are "pending" or "in review."
I would gladly go to Waitlist Purgatory at this point just to make sure I am not imagining that I applied anywhere!!!
    Uggggggggh.
Vent over.  Thank you for your consideration.  ;-)

A couple of weeks back I was sure I was destined to be completely shut out, now I'm on half of the waiting lists of schools I applied to. So basically Im sort on feeling good, sort of feeling like hot trash. Like wow...youre almost there but not quite. What a feeling.

Congratulations!!  I visited the campus once a while back and it's beautiful!  I hear good things about their Bio program too.
On that note, I sent the response back today and I've committed to University of Wisconsin!  I also received an email from the graduate school asking for my official transcripts and that an "official offer" cannot be made until they see these.  Is there anything I should worry about?  Do some applicants get rejections from the graduate school although the program emailed them an acceptance letter?  I haven't notified the other programs of my decision yet.  I graduated undergrad years ago if it helps.

@sprklinthe I get that this can be a sore subject, but that's actually why this thread was made. I didn't get in anywhere last year and it hurt. Luckily, there are multiple places to discuss that (and the worry when waiting) on this forum. This thread was specifically created so that there would be a place for those with admissions to let off stress without making those still waiting feel bad.

Best of luck with your programs! Hopefully, you'll be joining us in worrying over the decision process soon enough! <3

Go to a nutritionist on campus. They know the nutrients you need and they know the stress of school. They are the professionals that can help. They helped me a lot.

Has anyone still not heard from UNC BBSP?  I applied to the Neuro track but I'd be interested in hearing from people who applied to any track.  I'm assuming it's a rejection at this point, but it's odd that there are several rejections on the results page and yet I've heard nothing.  There also doesn't seem to be a rejection message when I login to the application portal.  I applied before the priority deadline if that makes any difference.

Anybody get really into their head? Like sometimes if I start hoping too much, then I'm like, "Oh, better stop or you won't get in!" Haha, like obviously, my thought process has no effect on what the admissions committee decides, but thoughts like that run through my head all the time.

Good. Because you have offered some comically dangerous advice.

He only has to get "physically aggressive" once for your advice to turn out poorly for OP.  The guy only threatened to divorce his wife because she won't let him hang a Nazi banner. He sounds really stable and like the kind of fellow who is unlikely to get physically aggressive.

    Are you for real?

Holy mother of God, no! This advice is bad enough when offered to people in non-threatening relationships ....

OP:  fuzzy hit the advice head on. Please take care of your physical and emotional health. If want to try to help your husband, that is great (I think). But please don't believe that it is your responsibility or that you alone can change him.

Anyone else not get an interview or rejection from UNC BBSP?  Would appreciate at least some closure, as I am waiting in limbo land on 4 programs with ~Dec 1 application deadlines.

I know that the interviews go until mid-March! I rescheduled from a January date to March 9 (and may need to reschedule again because of winter weather messing up my current interview schedule).

As far as I know, the latest interview weekend they offer for IGP is 2/9 (they may have a later date, but that was the latest of four that I know of). Hope that helps and you hear something soon! Vandy's other IGP dates are 1/19, 1/26, and 2/2.

I'll copy/paste two posts from a recent thread here.

    StemCellFan:
"I'm not sure what the actual statistics are for those places, but I've heard it ranges anywhere from 50% to 80%.  It depends on the program though and the percentage of applicants admitted one year can differ from the next.  Either way, I would go in with confidence and bring your A-game while you're there!
As far as preparations go, I would look into the research of the people you are interviewing with.  I would peruse a couple recent papers, but don't worry about reading their whole bibliography or anything.  Some of these individuals are going to share your research interests and will come from a list you provided to the program coordinator or are faculty you've indicated an interest in working with when you applied.  Some faculty you meet with could be from the admissions or recruiting committee whose research may differ from what you want to work on.  I would still brush up on what they do and make sure you can have an intelligent conversation with them about your research and theirs.  Be sure to ask questions pertaining to their research; they want to engage in a two-way conversation with you.
I would make sure you can succinctly and coherently describe your research.  If you have multiple, different research experiences, I would focus on your most current projects but be able to answer questions on past work you've done.
Also make sure you can answer why you want to do a PhD at those programs specifically, why you want a PhD in general, and what your career goals are.  If you have specific research interests, be sure you're able to communicate those as well.
Other than that, know yourself.  A lot of these programs will have social events with alcohol.  If you don't drink, this isn't the time to start.  Be personable, be inquisitive, there are resources online for questions to ask graduate students and/or faculty so you can get a feel of the program.
Also make sure you dress appropriately for the weather.  I've lived in the midwest my whole life and I can tell you that January/February gets really cold and there's salt, snow, and some ice on the ground.  Not so much a problem for California, but it might be chilly in NYC.  I would make sure to bring a warm coat and proper footwear to walk around in.  In general, there will be a lot of walking, so I'd advise against heels (unless you can walk all day in them).
I hope this helps!  I know this advice as been helpful for me as I'm preparing for my interviews.
Source: Graduate students/faculty at the university I'm currently working at."

    Neuro15:
    "I'll emphasize a few things:
1.) Know why you applied to each program. Seems simple, right? But I can guarantee you it's a trickier question than it seems when you go to actually say why (nerves play a role in this). Know your typical POIs, but also the program's general strengths. Out of all the great programs out there ---and there are a ton--- what made this school stand out? Additionally why do you want a PhD? The job market isn't amazing, and academia is a tough life.
2.) Know your research inside and out. You will be asked about what you did previously. If you interview with someone familiar with the area of your research you might get asked pretty detailed questions. It's best if you can answer these without appearing flustered or nervous. Knowing your research backwards and forwards really helps with this.
3.) PIs are nerds (aren't we all here?). They love to talk about their research. Accordingly, most PIs love it when interviewees ask thoughtful questions about their work. Bonus points if you make the PI think.
4.) Be polite and courteous...to everyone! This should go without saying, but it amazes me how people can be impolite to the secretaries or even other students. Assume everything you do will get back to the ADCOM."

Anyone else running into the same issue of having Emory Cancer biology interview date conflict with another interview they said yes too. They said they "might" give skype interviews instead to people who can't make it, but maybe if there were enough people we could ask to attend another GDBBS date.
